View Full Version : I give up on this species!

Recently I started working at a local grocery chain. I am a stocker, so my duties consist of lugging various boxes of products from the unloading docks to their respective aisles via large metal carts. I unbox the items, put them on their shelves, break the boxes down, them take them to the back once more to begin the process again. Keep in mind I am in the aisles, in plain view, for 3/4 of the time I am on the clock. My uniform is a neon yellow collared shirt with the company name and motto printed in large type on the back. In fact the print on these shirt backs is so large workers for these particular stores have earned the nick name "billboards with legs." I also wear a fairly large name tag which also bears the company name.
Now, it is not uncommon for customers to ask me questions, but do you know what query is most frequent with our clientele?
And I quote, "Excuse me. Do you work here?"
O_o
I give up.

It's just a standard way people start. No different from answering "Is that ___" on the phone when ringing a person who lives alone.

I know how that goes, man. No, I don't work at kroger, I just happen to like wearing the uniform. Jeez...they could always just say "Hi" or "Can you help me?" when they greet employees...

They do that to me all the time at BB....the one I hate is when they want us to call all the stores for a movie, esspecially on a busy night and if it's a new movie all stores will be out of then get mad when we tell them no store will have it....

I stock shelves as well... But most of my time stocking is before the store opens.... Though I still get the "Do You work here" bit... And one of these days I may just flip and say...
"No! I Like Dressing up as an employee, and Filling the sheves at no cost to them!! WHAT DO YOU THINK!!"
.... though that may be tempting... I still need my job....

Work it the other way. Im sick of asking people who stack shelves where something is, and them giving me an answer along the lines of "It's over there", as they point to aproxamately 26 more isles.

If I don't know, I tell them I don't know, then go hunting down the aisles with them. I'm sick of vague directions too, so I avoid giving them.

Just show a lil leg next time Fett, and they may just escort you to the aisle in question. :p

I've got this absolutely surreal image of Fett clapping his hands merrily in time watching a line of short people doing the can-can in the middle of a supermarket aisle.

Ever think of saying "No, I don't work here." then go back to loading the shelves or whatever?

Yeah, I've considered sayin' somethin' like "Nope, I don't work here." or "Are you kiddin'. I love these stylish shirts.":lol
But like Neyasha, I need this job.

When I'm asked for directions I always take them to the aisle they want... the only thing I point and say "It's over there", is when people ask for the washroom.... now Fett, I know you may sometimes need an escort to go to the washroom... But you won't get it from me.... Though if you ask nice enough, you may get some leg....

whenever i'm at a Petco, i turn into an honorary employee; it's cool ^_^ i've been to Petcos so often that i pretty much know where everything is; i help old ladies figure ot the eztag thing, you name it, i do it. Though, i don't handle the animals. i did get to play with a chinchilla once though; that was cool.
Other stores however, like Krogers, Garden Ridges, Big Lots, Costcos and even Wal-Marts, i do get asked if i work there. It does get a little annoying, cause where as say you, Zeke, are wearing a uniform that is pretty distinct to Kroger, i wear suits and the such. Alot of the time Ii get asked if i'm management. That's always nice, and lots of times it's a good lead-in to my pitch.
but don't mind me; i'm sick today so i had to stay home. i'm just writing cause i feel lonely.

another one I hate is the people who can't do the alphabet, they start in the middle and ask for example "where is Transporter?" I so wanna say "under T you tard!" or the ppl that can't understand that our VHS and DVD are right next to each other, they come up, "Where's the ___ on DVD?" "Right next to the tapes, they're both together." "But there's only tapes there." like I work there but I don't know how it's placed up there.....grrrr....

Just be wary not to sound smug when saying that Sorr. If it ISNT under T, you may look quite the fool :)

:lol I just read the start of this thread...... Yep, happens to me too...I just look at them and smile, then look at my shirt and say "no, not really" then THEY look at my shirt and start laughing. Of course you get the one or two that sport the look of "I am not amused" :lol oh it's pretty funny. :)

Similarly, myself and the woman I work with of a Saturday, cool, crazy aussie make such a great team. On the liquor counter if any drinks are going to go out of date soon, we reduce the price and label the products accordingly. You wouldn't believe how often we have some woman stare right at them, label included and ask: "'Ey love, is this lager four-pack £2.50?"
Nowadays, Stella and I will just say: "No love, we're just pulling your leg, they're really £6." The reactions are hilarious, it's cruel but so funny.
Edit: (Huggles sick, lonely s'Il!)

I feel better now; slept most of the day. still coughing my lungs out, but i should be fine
heh, as far as pricing goes, whenever people ask how much something is, I always say stuff like 'for you? 500 bucks!'

Just when you thought the insanity was over......
Today at work I was approached by a rather grizzly looking gentleman. His clothes were torn and caked with motor oil. He bore all the ear markings of a true mechanic. Now what follows is the brief yet very BIZZARE conversation we had.
Me: Can I help you find something, sir?
Customer: Yeah, buddy you can. Ya see.....I thought it'd be on your medicine aisle but it wasn't there and I ain't gotta clue where I might find it.
Me: What type of medicine are you looking for, sir?
Customer: O....well....ya see it ain't exactly medicine. Ya see my wife sent me out to find one.....if ya know what I mean.
(By the expression on his face I assumed he was looking for "protection.")
Me: You'll find condoms over in the pharmacy. Just ask the gentlemen behind the counter.
Customer: Well ya see it ain't exactly a condom, either. But you're on the right track. It's more of a.......a.....of a........toy.
(Several moments of stunned silence.)
Me: I'm sorry.......sir. We don't stock......those.....here.
Customer: Oh well. Thanks anyway.
I'm still wondering if there was a hidden camera somewhere that I don't know about.

:lol I got that once, we had a new member who had signed up and everything then says "Where can I find triple X?" The movie had yet to come out so we said not out yet...He then says really loudly "I mean porn not the movie!" We say we don't have that, family store...He yells "How can you not have porn?" and stomps out....but the funniest is when you get an old lady come up to ya and whisper "Honey, where do ya keep the pornos?" I've had two old ladies ask me that and I laughed out loud both times before I could stop myself......
