You can use the force to make objects hover.. you can use it to throw/push people and things, you can use it to jump..

Can you use it to make YOURSELF levitate or "fly" for a short time?

I'm not talking about a force jump.. I mean actually hover yourself.. like magneto in the stature of liberty.

If you can, why don't we see jedi hovering around in the movies?

If you can use the force, why would you need some fancy yoda floating thingy?

I'd say yes, but you'd have to be an accomplished specialist in such an act. For instance, Anbira can do such a thing.

Yes, you can make yourself "fly".

Why dont we see more of it? It's still a mental strain and I think it's really only a Master could truly achieve it. Yoda I suspect could fly quite well, but why not use a levitating plate if one's there? why waste mental concentration when your having important discussions?

Control over yourself is actually much harder than controlling an inert rock, or even someone else. The focus changes.

I dunno, sometimes I'm puzzled by the lack of powers being used by Jedi in the movies. somehow, it's really seeming the Force is a way of life, more than powers.

In one of the pre-Episode II books (which I think is titled The Approaching Storm) Jedi Master Luminara Unduli uses the Force to levitate and spin herself. However, the act is presented as one she has taken time to learn but one that she has not truly mastered, and it requires great concentration and energy.

Yoda would not levitate himself because using the Force in that way is wasteful when he has a hover chair or a cane to assist his travel. Jedi aren't supposed to gratuitously use the Force at all, hence Anakin's comment in Episode II about how Obi-Wan would kill him if he knew Anakin was levitating fruit without having a very good reason.

Edit:

Marcus: You're darn right it's a way of life and thought. The general principle for Jedi Force usage is "Don't do it unless you must" because over-use of power corrupts the wielder. If Jedi called on the Force to thwomp every problem that came along, people would either grow dependant on the Jedi to solve their problems or the Jedi would begin to dominate the lesser folk. To paraphrase Mara Jade in Vision of the Future: "Not all Dark Jedi are taught to be evil. Some slip into it all by themselves."

Exactly. I've always thought(through reading some SW EU that supports it) that Jedi try not to abuse the force, when it's not needed. Which is why Yoda uses a cane and limps around when he could walk easily like he did in the Dooku fight. I believe Spector of the Past(or was it Vision of the Future?) talked about it a bit. Luke needed to settle down his casual Force play, or he'd be close to the Dark Side. Mara was talking him into it, saying he needs to treat it with more care. I believe the EU spoke about this in one of the early NJO TPBs. :)

IMO, I think they could, in theory, levitate themselves. Provided there was a good reason and they had practiced enough in that area. :)

Mara and Anakin on Datooine had pretty much the same conversation.

Basically Leeloo, what Magneto does is fine, but not what Neo does at the end of the Matrix :)

All of you are missing the obvious one here: Luke made Threepio levitate in ROTJ. So I'd assume he could do it to himself. ;)
