Someone needs to make a sabre, so we can look at it in envy. :lol

It's a tutorial to make the handle of a lightsabre, and it rocks. Perhaps someone could... I don't know... make me one!!!!!! :D

The real problem is the lack of texture on the handle. creating the basis out of a steel texture first would go a long way to helping. Puls, also coverting some of the object to a chrome finish.

edit- added a blade as well. Still think it looks good, just wish I had the "glow" option :\

Dasquian Belargic
Apr 25th, 2003, 08:29:01 AM
what are you using to make it?

Dae Jinn
Apr 25th, 2003, 08:38:20 AM
Make what? :lol

I'm using the marquee tool to make the hilt -- with the gradiant (spelling?) tool to do the shading. I used the same thing for the blade, but I just added a flood light "Lighting Effect" on it and it looks much better.
And I'm using Photoshop, Version 3.0, which has half the options 4,0 has. I used 4.0 in college, but this version came on my computer.

Dasquian Belargic

I'm going to try and convert that tutorial with Paintshop. See if some of the same things can be done in a different way with that program. :)

Nicely done Dae. Needs a little work but you'll get better. Just keep adjusting it. :)

Yeah, I could probably make a neat sabre through drawing it on the computer, then coloring it. Would actually look kind of neat, like a comic book sabre. Though I really don't have that much patience. :lol

Syrius Cline
Apr 26th, 2003, 12:17:29 AM
With a few adjustments, that could be great. Few suggestions that would make that even better:

First, widen the area between the ridges and the indent. Make the indents about as wide as the little ridges you made. Then add a small black line on one of the sides of the ridges and blur it a very small amount. Do that to the other little raises, etc. and it'll add more of a 3D quality. I'm actually working on mine right now, not very near done but it's coming along nicely. I might post a preview soon. :)

Sage Hazzard
Apr 26th, 2003, 01:08:02 AM
Sample of mine. :D

Lots more to do. I'll probably change the design from what it is in that tutorial and use it as a character's official lightsabre of choice. I don't really like what that tutorial did with the right side of the sabre.

Hmm.. lightsabers.. I was never any good at making the hilt.. maybe when I get get back home I'll try it out.

Jeseth used to search for some fan-made lightsabers.. you know the replica ones made from pipes and whatnot and used photos of those as a base then he'd do whatever the heck to it.. at least that's what he told me he did.

I think I tried that a couple of times but I really sucked at photoshop/paintshoppro.. whatever I was using then.

Darth Turbogeek
Apr 26th, 2003, 06:59:55 AM
The guy writing the tutorial was a tool. IT'S NOT FRIGGING POSSIBLE WITH HIS METHOD. Frankly, i wasted an hour before I said screw it and just went using gradients instead of lines as that freak stated. And using gluassianl blurs to create the cylinder look? Bah. Have a look. He simply is wrong. I'm goign to redo this using a metal texture to begin with, then a bit of gradients and lighting to make it look like a cylinder of metal.

One thing that is neat is the suggestion of transform > shape. That does work well. Anyweay, using gradients but starting with the gluassian blue I get so far....

You know, as someone who used to play a bit of tennis, holding a hilt like that would take some getting used to, only after a ton of painful blisters. Youch.

Sorry, back to your tutorial.

Dae Jinn
Apr 26th, 2003, 08:38:03 AM
Very nice you two :)

I still like my first one; it's not all ridgey. Could you imagine actually holding the one from the tutorial? You'd have ridge marks on your hand! :lol

Marcus Telcontar

Could you imagine actually holding the one from the tutorial? You'd have ridge marks on your hand!

Also, think about this - those ridges are likely to double as cooling vanes. So as well as friction blisters as Eve said, you get blisters from burns.

Oh yeah.....

Sage Hazzard
Apr 28th, 2003, 12:22:35 AM
I say the handle is actually very good. I imagine one hand goes on the area before the things that come out of the blade and one goes after. Allows for more power I would think, as you'd have two hands firmly grasped and your center of gravity would have to be firmly set. Very good for an experienced swordsmen who sticks to old school swordplay, I would think. Now if you were a wirey little guy who flipped around a lot and swung off balance while turning and stuff, that'd be a death wish to use.

Dude, I'm going to have to ask you to make me a sabre and keep asking you until you do it. :lol

Gurney Devries
Apr 28th, 2003, 02:17:44 AM
Arg. I could use some help with this part:
Select the line tool, and set paint type to darken, opacity to 15%.I'm using PS7 and I don't see any options of this nature for the line tool. :(

Ha, nevermind. Found an easier and better way to do it.

Marcus Telcontar
Apr 28th, 2003, 03:36:23 AM
:o Ummm.. not sure how to respond to the praise. Thank you - considering what rough couple of months it's been, it means much to me, esp coming from someone whom I'm pretty sure has no idea how in awe their skillz I am.

Sage - No way man. If I started doing them for everyone, I'd be buried in requests. Well, okay, I'll do a few :). But you'll need to be very detailed in what you want

Te sabre itself came from two idea in 1999 - one was the claymore William Wallace carried in Braveheart and the other was a sabre idea Yog did for me. Combine the two, you get a sabre that does exactly what Sage stated it would, but allow other techniques to be used. Puls a few other custom ideas like twin stages, detachability, back history and the Quenya etchings.

So, in realitiy, it's taken me this long to get skilled enough to actually produce Athona. Seeing the results, it's worth it.

Forgive me for pratting this crap, I'm jsut a touch worn out by PC rebuild and not thinking straight.

---

I have a few words for the tutorial writer at that part Gurney's up to. None of them printable. He claims gradients are not the way to shade and using lines to shade the cooling vanes etc is the way to go. He is totally wrong. Ignore him and use gradients. Make sure you know how to selectively apply a gradient with an opacicy, else you'll get some weird and unfortunante results. I used...

1. Select the area to grade

2. Set gradient to Black to transparent

2. Set the master Opacicy to about 20%

4. Apply Gradient

5. Reapply to suit darkness and distance required.

Gurney you are correct, there are no options in PS7 to do that. However, if you draw a line, set it to those settings, the next lines you draw will also have those settings.

Marcus Telcontar

Any reason for three lights btw?

There's four modes it can switch to. Buttons 2 and A, used together turns it into a Flamesabre, which is what Count Dooku's sabre was supposed to be, or so I remember from some time ago. Anyway, more than likely total BS, but that's the way the sabre is envisionaged in my head, so I ran with it.

Gurney Devries
Apr 28th, 2003, 07:51:48 AM
I made the base cylinder using the tutorial and did pretty much everything else on my own. I'm fairly pleased with the results, seeing as how this is my first attempt at making something entirely from scratch in Photoshop. I'm afraid I abused the chrome effect a wee bit much, especially towards the emitter end. Maybe I'll try and work on that later.

I mean, the concept is a blatant theft, but at least it's a good blatant theft.

You know, as someone who used to play a bit of tennis, holding a hilt like that would take some getting used to, only after a ton of painful blisters.

That's about what I said after actually taking a swordfighting class, and thusly re-designed my saber to be a smooth hilt, hand-and-a-half style.

sonja
Apr 28th, 2003, 06:11:47 PM
Maybe if the hilt was rubberish, or wrapped in ... wrap, I could use it. When I go and play now my whole palm bleeds, and my inner thumb bleeds. Plus, what if your hand sweats on metal or steel? What ya gonna do then? Some people are sweaty. I know that why it's rrrruffled with rrrridges, but that still wouldn't help you.

Gurney Devries
Apr 28th, 2003, 06:18:16 PM
You could make the chrome more transparent, that might workNot really. Can't do that with the method I used.

I didn't add chrome on top of the objects. Instead, I deformed the objects until they looked chrome. In hindsight, it might be possible for me to do the chrome as a seperate layer on top of the regular saber in the future. Oh well.

The handgrip was probably the most difficult part to make, but I'm very pleased with how it came out.

Nicely done Makoto. One suggestion though, smooth out the texture. It looks a little like a rock, rather than a metal. Otherwise very good. :)

DANG Dae! Huge improvement over your other ones. No offense to the earlier ones but this is clearly better. How'd you get that color, texture? I can't ever find a way to make natural looking chrome or metal. I especially like that little blue at the bottom. Secondary lighting = an expert's best friend.

To heck with this way of making sabres. I can't make anything near Marcus', and I'm using crappy Paint Shop. So instead... I shall coloring it manually! Ol' Comic Book coloring. Then atleast I can say my crappiness is a "style". :)

Dae Jinn
Apr 30th, 2003, 12:19:32 AM
I used a combo of layers (on different settings), embossing and dodge and burn. It started as a blue saber, so...:uhoh

The blue is actually from the embossing over a layer set on difference. I blurred the dodge & burn areas, which I created with a marquee. A lot of it was copy and pasted. All the "chrome" parts are from the main body.:lol

Gurney Devries
Apr 30th, 2003, 06:09:52 PM
The tutorial is pretty crap. Follow the instructions up until you have the basic cylinder, then ignore them and just work with that.

Make ridges by using the rectangular marquee tool to select a section, right click, Free Transform, and stretch it out a bit.

Although it may not be the best way to do it, I then cut the stretched out section into a new layer so I can add a bevel and drop shadow to it, giving it a rounded feel and having it cast it's own shadow onto the rest of the hilt.

Marcus Telcontar
Apr 30th, 2003, 06:16:46 PM

Thank you much. I'm having great difficulty with making it a realisitic metal. The chrome filter just isn't working for me. :(

True. But guys seem to think other-wise :rolleyes.

And while we're on the subject, light-sabers seem to be a huge (pardon the pun) phalic symbol. I mean, guys, holding red glowy sticks in front of their crotches....:lol I think it'd be great if we saw Ewan's real "saber" :mischief

DAMN Marcus....that's downright unbelievably good!

Only thing that looks funny is those little brown bumps on the second half of the saber...they look too short.

Lilaena De'Ville
May 21st, 2003, 10:14:42 PM
How do you make the rings? at the end of the saber?

Marcus Telcontar
May 22nd, 2003, 03:31:58 AM
<img src=http://www.thegjo.com/sabers/xazsabre2.jpg>

Another, earlier one.

You mean the ring the sabre can hang from on your belt? Lion, well, if the handhold bumps were higher up it doesnt really look right. Lowerign thim into the sabre body was better on the eye.

I'll add, the reason Wargrave's sabre actually looked like machined metal is I experimented and found a superior base than the tut was to work with, working with a bevel and emboss. Gimme a day and I'll get that one up

Edit - BTW, who wants to be the victim who gets the sabre that the new tutorial will be written with?

As you can see there is a definate pattern of design coming through. The handle is how id like it to be. Id like it to look semi sword like. Just have a mess with it and see what happens. I have faith in your creativness Mark :D

My genius friend made this for me as an adaptation of a sword he made back in January. It looks nothing like a real saber, but I love it...

marcus you are so good at that. I've tried to do photoshop stuff in the past but have failed miserably..... If you're not to busy can you make one for me? =P Its kind of simple because it was given to me by the sith, about 10 years ago (rp time). But its been used for all sorts of things, a tool to survive on Endar, like an old, over used sword or something.
