View Full Version : What country are you from?
Dutchy
Mar 24th, 2003, 04:59:25 PM
I assume most of you English speaking people are from the US, and some are from England or Australia. Then there are prolly some other countries, too.
Since not everyone has their country in their profile, and a place of origin is sometimes needed to put a post in the right context, I'd like to ask here what country you're from.
I for one am from The Netherlands, Europe. :)

Born in Waynesboro, Virginia, raised in the suburbs of Los Angeles, now reside in Santa Maria, California.
Sometimes I sound like I have a western New York accent, because my father was born and raised in Buffalo, and my mother was raised there as well.
I also have an interesting family tree that to me is the best of both worlds. On my father's side of the family, I'm only a third generation American, because both sets of great-grandparents emigrated from Poland. (So this also means I have a very Polish last name.) But on my mother's side of the family, specifically through her father's lineage, the family can be traced back to Colonial America. As a matter of fact, I had a great-great-great-great-something or other who was a captain in the Revolutionary army. So my mother, sister, and I are all members of the Daughters of the American Revolution (although we're not active in the organization anymore). :)

I'm the same way, sorta. My mom grew up in Tehran, Iran, and lived in Canada in '72, Brighton (a channelside city in England) in '74, tested out New Orleans in '75, went back to Iran and when her green card pulled through, she moved to New Orleans permanently in '78. My cousin's husband's father was General Nematollah Nassiri, childhood friend and classmate of the Shah, head of the Imperial Royal Guard and director of SAVAK (the Iranian KGB under the Shah, organized and run with major help from the CIA and Mossad), a group which killed some 13,000 Iranian dissidents and wounded another 50,000 through brutal torture, and he was executed by a court of the ayatollah February 15, 1979.
My father's side of the family has been in New Orleans since its founding in 1725, perhaps even longer, records are sketchy. My great*8 grandfather, Private Francois LaBiche, was an invaluable member of the Lewis & Clark party, and met personally with President Jefferson many times.
One of my great, great great (continue) grandmothers was Emmeline LaBiche, aka Evangeline. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote an epic poem about her in 1847, entitled Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie.
My distant cousin, Pierre LaBiche, was working for the french resistance in late 1944, and single-handedly thwarted a plan by Colonel von Waldheim to transfer a cargo of 22,000 pieces of art to General von Rundstedt's command. They made a movie about it, starring Burt Lancaster (The Train (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0059825) ).

Despite current events, this French-bashing is going too far. Freedom of speech and all but this is meant to be a public community and it has members who are making comments no longer bordering on racism but are actually racist comments. We have to stop <smallfont color={hovercolor}>-Censored-</smallfont>-footing around comments like these:
But yes, I despise the french.
According to the board statistics, 0.14% of visitors are French whilst although not a great number, French people do visit and I think it's wrong and rank to allow comments like the above to go unnoticed.
What if people started saying "I despise Americans, I despise the English, I despise Jews and Christians" etc. etc. It's unnacceptable. There's dissaproving of a county's actions but ham-handed remarks like that should have no place here.
