Saw it today(basically seen every Oscar film I can now...other than the shorts and the documentaries) and I thought it was really good. The performances are excellent, and the film is paced well. The dialogue is well written and memorable.
It almost reminded me of a Clancy thriller, only much better.

What's it about?

Kind of complicated, but at it's core the film is about how the USA got invloved in Vietnam.

"Book" Clancy, or "Adapted to Movie" Clancy?

Adapted...never read any of his books.
The only Clancy film that was better than this was "Red October". And to be honest they're pretty comperable IMHO.

I might like it then. While some of the adaptions are okay, they don't hold a hat to his books.

Well I can't say it was Clancy-like exactly. The main character afterall is a newsreporter covering the French war against the Revolutionary Vietnamese.
But I did remind me of a slower paced thriller in that vein. You were never completely certain what intentions characters had(especially Caine) or what exactly was coming next.
And of course it was a political themed flick ala Clancy.

So the movie begins when the French are still in power? Thats interesting my be worth checking it out then, since that the French involvment in Vietnam is not brought much up in movies for the most part.

Yes it begins in 1951, ends in 1952...way before when we traditionally think of the Vietnam conflict.

Glad you liked it Jonathan. I didn't remember seeing your review for it.
There's a theatre *kinda* near me showing all the nominated shorts(both live action and animated). I'm considering making it out there.
