Last night my daughter talked to me for the first time. Saying something like that is pretty strange, believe me, and I will never be able to say that again about her, so it’s pretty important. Living with someone for 10 months who refuses to say a word to you can be pretty irritating, but I was certain that eventually it would happen. Since this was such a momentous occasion I will relive it for you in text form, since that’s what people do in an e/n. The players are Daniel (father), Jessica (mother), and Jocelynn (Daughter).

As the door opened into the apartment, Jessica looked up from her book to see Daniel enter. He was visibly tired, no doubt because he had worked a 12 hour day and forfeited a lunch in favor of completing his daily duties. He placed his laptop on the floor and proceeded to give Jessica a kiss, then picked up Jocelynn as he always did when he got home.

“Hello sweetie,” Daniel said to Jessica, before telling Jocelynn the same.

He placed Jocelynn on the floor in front of the couch, where she promptly began her trek to the television. Jocelynn always seemed to love pulling the dvds from their case, making quite a mess for Jessica to deal with. This time she began to play with one of Daniels 1:18 scale car models that sit under the television. The particular model in question was a Porsche 911 GT1, a beautiful specimen of German race-car engineering. As she stroked her hands along it’s cool silver body, she smiled. Jocelynn showed more interest in the things that belonged to Daniel than anything else. Her favorite toys were xbox controllers and keyboards, and she had always been entranced by the 1:18 scale cars.

“persh,” said Jocelynn, followed by a fit of laughter.

Daniel and Jessica both looked at each other, trying to contemplate what had just happened. This was not the normal baby noises that they were accustomed to, this was something completely different.

“persh!” reiterated Jocelynn, followed by even more laughter.

It was clear to the two parents that their child had spoken. She had said ‘Porsche.’ Most children say either ‘mama’ or ‘dada’ for their first word, but not Jocelynn. Jocelynn had decided that if she was going to talk, she was going to talk about flat 6 rear-engined German sports cars (no god damn it she was not talking about the Cayenne or the GT). Jessica was visibly upset, but there was a slight smirk on Daniel’s face as he realized how very rare this must be for a father. Perhaps his daughter would share in his passion. However, Daniel was hiding his true feelings inside, as he did not want to look upset.

He had really wanted her to say Ferrari.

*edit* I do KNOW that she was saying porsche, as she said it another 200 times that night and kept reaching for the car, before anyone claimes she was making noises.
