I'll think it over.

"FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM - Hero"

I bought this film on VCD, but still haven't watched it quite yet.

Admiral Lebron
Mar 12th, 2003, 08:20:39 PM
I had never heard of any of those films... honestly..

JonathanLB
Mar 12th, 2003, 09:51:37 PM
Don't feel bad -- only 1 of those movies even opened in Portland. Even as a critic, I never heard of 3 of those 5 films. I don't understand how they even managed to nominate them. Everyone has heard of Y Tu Mama Tambien or Talk to Her who is at all interested in film, but they were shut out of the foreign categories for various reasons (technical reasons actually).

I have heard a lot about Hero and can't wait to watch my copy of it, but the only other one I had heard of was El Crimen Del Padro or whatever. That played here at Fox Tower 10, but the others never played in Portland I am positive.

I just wonder how they manage to nominate films that nobody saw. I hadn't even heard of critics mentioning those movies before.

I know Enieme was a huge shocker. Polanski well it was a surprise, actually after that I thought the Pianist was going to win because they won 3 of the top awards, it surprising Chicago won really consider the only other big Oscar it won was Best Supporting Actress.

sirdizzy
Mar 23rd, 2003, 11:41:14 PM
i thought they didfairly well they did win 6 overall oscars which is pretty good

this years oscars felt like1994 to me i don't mind chicago winning and i plan on getting it on dvd even though i thought lord of the rings should win

i wanted shawshank to win in 94 but was happy with forrest gump both movies i have owned on vhs and dvd (i gave my vhs' away when i replaced them with dvd's)

CMJ
Mar 24th, 2003, 09:15:35 AM
I think my favorite moment was Peter O'Toole's honorary montage...and speech. Really classy. One of my favorite actors.

A personal favorite was also Conrad Hall's posthumous award. Not only was the award deserved(and SOMETHING went RTP's way) but his son's speech was really sentimental.

"The Pianist" won in three upsets. By the end I was thinking it would take the big one too.

ReaperFett
Mar 24th, 2003, 10:19:01 AM
When you think about it, I feel Polanski was the likely winner. Like Kidman, they have had A LOT of press. Keeps them in the publics thoughts.

Im glad Brodey won though. The others all won before. And Cage and Nicholson (WHo cracked me up when called gay :)) looked genuinely pleased for him.

CMJ
Mar 24th, 2003, 10:29:18 AM
All of them looked happy for Brody. Jack Nicholson went "Wow"(read his lips) and clapped thunderously. DDL clapped heavily too.

As for Polanski...it's still a huge upset. To honor someone who's still on the lam after all these years was a big deal. I didn't think the majority of voters would be willing to bestow the award upon him.

ReaperFett
Mar 24th, 2003, 10:37:27 AM
Suppose the actual victim saying she wanted him to win helped

CMJ
Mar 24th, 2003, 10:49:24 AM
She didn't say she *wanted* him to win. She said the rape against her should not be taken into account when they were deciding if they should honor his work or not.

Still, I didn't feel they actually WOULD give it to him. Still as a great director, he most definitely deserves an Oscar. While "The Pianist" was not my personal choice for Best Pic(or Director) the direction was flawless. Understated, and not flashy...perfect for the film.

Way to go Roman!

ReaperFett

They better commit Martin to a long term contract after his performance though :)

CMJ
Mar 24th, 2003, 11:08:02 AM
I believe you're referencing Scorcese's standing 'O' of Plonaski. I felt that was genuine. I believe the two are friends.

Besides it was better losing to a "master" than a first timer. Scorcese has lost to 2 first timers in the past...a third woulda been terrible.

JMK
Mar 24th, 2003, 11:18:41 AM

Great.

Of course the Oscars shouldn't be a war show, but in a land of freedom of speech it was a welcome sound, or I thought so anyway.

He had the chance to say something poignant. Instead, he sounded like some ignorant guy who doesnt have any facts but wants to make a big stink. When he started his speech, he had a good number of cheers. By the end, it was HEAVILY in the boos.

I mean, Im sure the fake talent of him (On a fake Slim-Fast plan;)) would be shut up by those fake pictures of the fake Kurds the fake Iraq used fake chemical weapons on. Shame his fake braincells didnt bother to make an actual point :)

True, it wasn't the bestest of speeches. :)

But still, at least he worded the opinion of the anti-war people.

i think he has the right to speak his mind, it is a free country but it was obviously a low key show and he may have gone too far (most actors just flashed peace signs)

Susan Sarandon's simple peace sign was far more effective. :p

Id agree there. It said "I disagree. Period"

I'd say "Shame on you, Mr. Bush!" is a much more powerful sign.

ReaperFett
Mar 24th, 2003, 04:47:35 PM
Not when he starts shouting out like a 12 year old.

And "Shame on you Mr Bush" while most the place is BOOING is not powerful to me :)

I didn't hear any booing, to be honest, but, like I said, his speech did need a lick of paint here and there.

BTW, shouldn't we be having this discussion here (http://swforums.net/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28148&perpage=50&pagenumber=8), mr. moderator? :)

You didn't hear him getting booed? He was practically getting fruit thrown at him. :p

Nope, they only showed a short fragment. Actually, Moore was the ONLY Oscar footage most stations showed (so far). Guess he made some impression. :p

He just started the whole thing off wrong. He called the legitimacy of Bush's election into question. That was not a good way to begin a speech.

He was just railing against something that happened over 2 years ago. Granted at the time alot of the country was torn, heck it divided us a nation for a good while. Dear lord though, we're way past that now. It just put the crowd in a foul mood.

So he cant even make a RELEVENT speech :)

And everyone else who mentioned the war got applause, as they were respectful. Brodey got a standing ovation. Respect to them :)

Anyone with the stupidity to call Bush's election into question (face it, it was legal and by the rules) automatically gets dismissed as a crackpot to me. As much as I liked Bowling for Columbine and I think it made some very good points, Moore's speech was.... dumb. Very dumb.

Did you see some of the stars laughing, I guess they were think what an idiot. I saw Ford and Nicholson just laughing away at him.

Some looked really uncomfortable, some were laughing.

Obviously alot of people were booing. One of the hardest things I've ever had to watch at the Oscar's. Moore is a moron. :p

Well it wasn't the most embarrassing what about that streaker who ran behind David Nevin.

True before mine as well :p It had to be the funniest moment, I can't remember what Nevin said but it was hysterical.

Ah, last place belongs to ME!!!! I only chose picks I wanted to win. I ignored most of the telecast the other night. I just didn't feel like watching it. I tuned in for one quick moment and saw the Best Oscar winner's speech. I thought THAT was a classy way to make a statement for peace and show support for a soldier at the same time.

As for Moore, I only heard audio of it and the boos sounded quite loud. But back stage he was quoted as saying only "4" people or so were booing. Damn, those must have been some pretty loud people.

As for Polanski, isn't the charge against him Statutory Rape? That I could live with, but if it was against her will and violent, then screw him. I'm not condoning some 30 year old having sex with a 15 year old, but I do come from a family tree that started with my 30 year old Cuban grandfather marrying my grandmother at 15 and then having a family that included 11 children. Different world, different social norms.

Sex with a 13 year old, rape. I bet the guy is majorly messed up though, 10 years before Charles Manson killed his pregnant wife.

Ironic though, that he isnt allowed in the country for having sex with someone half his age, and recieves his award from Harrison Ford :)

CMJ

Manson killed his wife only 3 or 4 years before I believe. I think that did screw with his mind.

Not that I condone what Polanski did.
