Great article Marcus, but I have to WTF one particular part of it:

"Ninjitsu is sometimes translated as the "art of stealth", as warriors used a wide range of techniques to hide and fight.

It has become famous as a result of movies and television shows such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Beverly Hills Ninja."

Ummm...maybe I'm thinking of the wrong Beverly Hills Ninja, but wasn't that a movie with Chris Farley? :lol

Had to point that out. :D

For only $50 a month or more, you too can be a ninja. I'm sure there are evil ninjitsu courses where you live too.

Karate is what I did myself. Getting broken ribs sort of ended that

(sniggers)

Having trained against kick-happy martial arts, I'm convinced its not the way to fight. Tae's "gear shift" their kicks. Slightly more powerful than a kung fu kick, and a bit prettier, but waaaaaaaay more telegraphed. They also kick fully extended, instead of keeping their leg "chambered" until the striking point.

One example of this is in Kiss of the Dragon, which is a suprisingly realistic martial arts movie. Watch Jet Li fight the two blond guys, and lure them into tight spaces, where those big kicks don't have room. You can jam those Tae roundhouses very easily.

I dunno -- we always keep our kick chambered until the point where we strike. Perhaps our Master has incorporated his own ideas into things and has made it better, but we never kick fully extended -- unless it is for show like during forms and such things. :D

Thats good and smart then. I wonder if he took any Kung Fu or something with a more close-quarters base to it.

I've squared against a buddy of mine in Tae Kwon Do and asked him to kick me, then calmly put a hand on his knee as his leg swept up. He fell. I laughed.

Do you shift your hands or arms during a kick?

Xazor Elessar
Feb 24th, 2003, 06:34:48 PM
I don't -- a lot of the n00bs do, but I found that it throws off balance easier sometimes. My Master teaches them that later because sometimes one becomes distracted with the shifting of the arms/hands and forgets about what they're doing. It looks bad anyway. :lol

...unless you're Jean Claude Van Damme! Then you can make a mockery of it and still look like you know what to do :)

:lol True that! :lol

I tend to keep my feet firmly planted unless I see a real opportunity. Byt that's based on no real hamstring flexibility - I just can not get a roundhouse kick up high. Besides, a front kick can be much, much faster and just as powerful if executed right, while a front foot snap is a good teeth rattler. Or a ball breaker :evil

Feliciana Devano
Feb 24th, 2003, 06:44:09 PM
I broke my Master's cup once. >_< I gave him a heavy spinning back kick right into the groin. Thought I broke the ball of my foot but I broke his cup instead and walked away with a big <smallfont color={hovercolor}>-Censored-</smallfont> bruise! :lol Not to mention, I got several hunderd push ups for my offense. :x

I was quickly put on the sandbag, rather than having my instructors let me kick their focus pads. Tried it a few times, and sent them flying, no matter how much they braced. Fancy kicks aren't my strong suit, but my legs, like Sebastian Janakowski's, are thick and strong. Front press kicks will kill grizzly bears. Maybe that's why I didn't go to Kung Fu much after Tiger. Still, I need to get back into it. If only I had the time...

Xazor Elessar
Feb 24th, 2003, 06:58:42 PM
:lol Yeah, time sux.

I haven't been able to go in a few weeks because time is being evil to me. :( If it was summer, I'd live in my dojang! :D

I used to be able to kick over my head (that means well over 6' 3" up). With the quickness. I had quite a nasty roundhouse =[

I always have regrets about not getting into some type of martial arts class earlier in my childhood. Back in my Freshman year I took about a month and a half's worth of boxing lessons, but all I did in that month really was condition and get in shape.

Didn't walk away with much, besides being in great condition.

We took a little dabbling of boxing in my Kung Fu class. Which was fun, cause then we all got to "step in the ring" and try our hand out. I suprised the crap out of one of my teachers, and landed a suprise jab squarely on his nose. He got over it, and pummeled me :)

My deal in sparing matches was to play "rope-a-dope." I let them come to me and then wear them out. It was fun. I was good at blocking because all the other students wanted to unleash the furious combos. :lol

I took Goju karate once. that was fun. We focused more on disarming techniques than punches and kicks, though. There are some martial arts classes around here, but I'm having trouble finding one that works for me.
