View Full Version : Insomnia

Jackie Dennegin
Jan 29th, 2003, 11:55:58 AM
By the breathing pond,
While consumed by it's misty breath,
I met Insomnia.
"Why are your eyes wide and soul tired?"
"My wife," he replied,"has dissapeared into
The moonlight."
"Can I help you find her?" I asked.
"Yes. She's pale with dark features and an
Air of peace."
"What is her name?" I asked.
"Rest."
We looked high upon grassy peaks
And low into snowy valleys.
At last, we found her
Under a tree down by that pond,
Having an affair with Slumber.
Insomnia lay down beside her,
Embraced her,
And then Insomnia was no more.

Caught my eye while surfing. One of the best poetic euphamisms I've seen yet.

True, that's a good poem. I am somewhat of an insomniac, and that one makes sense. :) I am pretty big into poetry.

I have been really in Langston Hughes as of late, moslty due to my inspiration at the MLK Day talks. Check this one out (if you haven't already heard it):

The Weary Blues
By Langston Hughes

Droning a drowsy syncopated tune,
Rocking back and forth to a mellow croon,
I heard a Negro play.
Down on Lenox Avenue the other night
By the pale dull pallor of an old gas light
He did a lazy sway . . .
He did a lazy sway . . .
To the tune o' those Weary Blues.
With his ebony hands on each ivory key
He made that poor piano moan with melody.
O Blues!
Swaying to and fro on his rickety stool
He played that sad raggy tune like a musical fool.
Sweet Blues!
Coming from a black man's soul.
O Blues!
In a deep song voice with a melancholy tone
I heard that Negro sing, that old piano moan--
"Ain't got nobody in all this world,
Ain't got nobody but ma self.
I's gwine to quit ma frownin'
And put ma troubles on the shelf."

Thump, thump, thump, went his foot on the floor.
He played a few chords then he sang some more--
"I got the Weary Blues
And I can't be satisfied.
Got the Weary Blues
And can't be satisfied--
I ain't happy no mo'
And I wish that I had died."
And far into the night he crooned that tune.
The stars went out and so did the moon.
The singer stopped playing and went to bed
While the Weary Blues echoed through his head.
He slept like a rock or a man that's dead.

Such a good poem. It is beautiful and full of life.

Do you write any of your own, Jackie?

I wandered lonely, like a star,
I walked into a car,
I went for a drink in a bar,
I met a pirate, he said arrrrrrrr.

Pfft, poetry is easy ;)

A what? Is that what you say when you meet a girl and go home with her? "Get your coat, you've pulitzered"?

(Seriously, what IS a Pulitzer?)

imported_Terran Starek
Jan 29th, 2003, 07:33:22 PM
:)

The Pulitzer Prize--it's an award given for accomplishment in literature, journalism, and music.

It's like a Nobel Prize for the sciences (although there is a Nobel for lit, too).

Does that clear it up?

ReaperFett
Jan 29th, 2003, 07:36:33 PM
AHhhhhhh, thanks.

So maybe if I sung it I'd win? ;)

imported_Terran Starek
Jan 29th, 2003, 07:43:00 PM
Well, with that poem, you'd have a better chance to win if someone kicked you in the junk and you sang "Happy Birthday" three octaves too high while drinking chocolate pudding!

:D

As a matter of fact:

ANYONE FEEL FREE TO POST SOME POETRY! CUZ I WANNA HEAR IT (this means you, Jackie!)

Mine aren't :)

GREEN LANTERN'S

Outfitted in the comic stereotypical
Red and blue of hero's power,
Leaping over buildings
In a single bound,
Catching speeding bullets in his
Teeth that were straight and perfect,
He was invincable until
By chance, he wandered by a mirror
With his medal of honor
(From the mayor of course),
And the kryptonitic reflection
Revealed his K-Mart uniform and
Dolly of canned goods
And Braces.

SILENT PICTURES

When at last we
Allow ourselves to open our eyes
And see the net of cynicism that stakes it's
Roots in our existence,
We see that the colors have faded and the
World is black and white,
But mostly hazy gray
Like a bad version of 'Casablanca'
That was left for too long in the heat.

TRACKS

While walking home I kept my head down
Afraid that someone would see me
Stepping over the dirty snow marred with showprints.
Making my own tracks.
And suddenly feeling so alone in my trudge through conformity
That I stumpled and fell,
Erasing the confident prints and
Scattering the clean slate of winter to
Reveal a patch of dead grass
That made me whimper
Because it wasn't hidden anymore.

BECOMING MOTHER

Tiny hands clasp yours
Trusting you completly and yet,
Though your hand is bigger
It doesn't know how to lead.
You wish that yours was smaller,
And that you knew which road to take,
Or what choices to make,
And how to choose if you did--
But you don't
And so,
In your overwhelming panic,
You take the hand and
Blindly grope through the darkness,
Never letting on.

See! Whaddya talkin about! That stuff is good stuff. And it's only made better by the fact that you wrote it. Poetry is personal and it is special. Alot of my poetry is just for me--for my own enjoyment. :D

Can you see the tears
Coming from the sky
Dropping from it's invisable, open wounded skin.
Earth is weeping for you
Earth is weeping for me
Earth is grieving for the wars that never seem to win.
Can you hear fate dancing
Dancing on our graves
Can you hear the dice
A game of dice between future and chance.
Can you hear hell laughing
He's waiting for you and me
He knows that in our heart
lies ruthlessness and greed.
Can you hear your mother weeping
She lost a son today
She heard the laughter from hells gate
She heard you scream as you fell down to hate.

its an older one i know - but I love it.

That's a pretty cool one. :) Here's one I wrote:

By Night

By night our eyes are free
From burning, bright lights and signs
From bitter faces of discontent
And painful glances of pretension

By night our minds are free
From boundaries of unacceptability strengthened by ignorance
From tasking, multitasking, planning
And the dreariness of an existence forged of logic

By night we dream!
We dream!
Sweet, wild are our dreams!
Where eyesight is contemptible and altogether dismissed
Where our minds are the vessels by which
Our souls will make the world their own.

roses are red,
algae is green,
I'd finish this rhyme,
but the rest is obscene.

... sorry.

Damn that Goat
By ReaperFett

Damn that goat, he drives a car!
he pretends to be a sheep, he says baaaa!

Damn that goat, he wears a fluffy coat!
And water wings, to help him float!

Damn that goat, he stole my wallet!
And now he is peeing, down my toilet!

Thinks he is a crafty sheep does he?
Well a very nice Lamb chop, he will be!

...Awful :)

Fett’s Lament (a Sonnet)

My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun;
Snow is far more white than her fleece white;
Her hooves are polished, shining black, each one,
She bleats her love song in the darkest night.

I have seen many goats that are quite fair
And visited them in the dark of night
But to this one they can never compare,
My mistress shines like fleec’ed Goddess bright.

The gentle smell of hay caught in her wool,
No one hath to me a more pleasing scent.
But when I look around, I am a fool
For I can not see where my mistress went.

Indeed, she is the fairest goat I’ve seen,
But don’t you tell my friends just where I’ve been.

*bows* Thank you, thank you. :D

your hair is black, your skin is blue,
But the poem you present in which you lie,
Makes all innocent people cry.

But... but... It's ART! :p

ReaperFett
Feb 3rd, 2003, 07:26:04 PM
Yes indeed it may be art,
Like painting sculpture or jam tart,
But what you do not understand,
is that with rumours like that I may be panned.

And if this day was to truly come,
Id hide behind you, your head, body and bum,
And when the pan it comes a calling,
it would sadly be you who goes a falling.

O Forum! My Forum! our fearful thread is done;
The net has weather’d every post, the prize we sought is won;
The plot is near, the bells I hear, the sounds of my phone ringing,
Is nothing like the fight I like, my saber drawn and crackling:
But O frell! frell! frell!
O the cursing in my head,
Where on the screen my post’s reply,
Frozen cold and dead.

ReaperFett
Feb 3rd, 2003, 07:30:15 PM
Indeed maybe our talk should end,
Else the fabric of the universe may just bend,
But one pleasing thing will hold my tide,
I managed to do a ryhme, involving a girl's backside.

Ryla Relvinian
Feb 3rd, 2003, 07:35:29 PM
Fett-y does not appreciate my art,
And makes me want to weep and sigh and swear.
Indeed, it pains me to my very heart,
That he should mock my perfect derriere!

:D

ReaperFett
Feb 3rd, 2003, 07:37:52 PM
No no, you do not understand,
I do not mock, for it is grand.
But rhyming about ones rear is often a trap,
as all you recieve is a painful slap.

Ryla Relvinian
Feb 3rd, 2003, 07:41:29 PM
Indeed, good sir, a slap I shall recieve,
Least if I have one more thing to say.
But slaps in public forums? We should leave
For punishment in your own special way. ;)

ReaperFett
Feb 3rd, 2003, 07:45:39 PM
Egads, now there is an offer!
Nothing would stop me, not man, Elk or Gopher!
And I agree, in public would not be just,
Now I shall move, noone shall see me for dust!

Stop this madness,
Stop I say!
The world shalt go loopy
Common sense run away!

It's shameful,
Disgraceful,
A wolf in sheeps clothes!
You've booted the highs and crowned all the lows!

Poor Will and Rob,
Those noble chaps,
Who wrote those fancy rymes.
For now they're turning in their graves,
Alas what dismal times!

So please,
I beg of you,
End this duel of Seuss!
I beg with the love of all that's holy,
With the power and vehemance of Zeus!

I loved that Green Lantern poem, it hit a chord. :) All your poems are good.... even Fett's for they do serve their own purpose... whatever purpose that may be. :lol

I've never really been into poems. Why? Now this is lazy, but it's because I don't like to think too hard about the meaning. I'm the kind of guy who tries to have fun all the time and come up with stories. My brain just doesn't work too well with metephors sometimes. :lol

Okay, this is one I just came up with on the fly. Felt left out with all this peom slinging going about.

Raging, burning, fire
'Tis candlelight for my desire
Slowly building in destruction
Spurned from your heavenly seduction
Why must you torment me so?
My love for you is all I know

I tried. :)

ReaperFett
Feb 5th, 2003, 03:19:07 AM
Thats quite good Sage :)

And truth be told, I dont get poetry. Some I can, yes, but others it feels more like a story or stement on many lines :)

My humours deranged you say you say!

I dont do rhymes
they end as crimes
they lower the tone,
and make people groan
theyre really not funny
and not worth much money
you see those lines worked?
that was purely chance.

Lilaena De'Ville

I can do poetry, but
only if they
don't rhyme.

Poetry is so personal. It's just guesswork--there's hardly a right answer as to what a poem is about. Only the author knows, and even then, it could be up to interpretation. :D

Cold and heartless
Heaven is shamed
Of this Creation
From sinful temptation

Denying mankind
She walks this world
Hate and despise
Are her disguise

Now reborn
Miraculous sinner
Cruel with intentions
Overbearing with tension

Feel her dead skin
Her blackened heart
No more is her life
For she is Death's wife

Cold and heartless
Heaven is shamed
Of this Creation
From sinful temptation
