As for history, there isn't really much. Suffice to say there may have been a great famine or crisis long ago, in which a charismatic female ruler saved the population, and imposed a sense of order. They are a rather xenophobic people, and behave in a manner to suggest that they don't really like you, but they'll tolerate you enough to take your money. Contact with others has been on trade routes, and little elsewhere, until recently.
