This is me testing my internet connection before I start installing anything else.

Sorry to disturb your thread hijacking, but I need to pick up a few items....

like a Java machine...

Sadly no. Its a security risk to enable it.

I think he means in Windows XP by default there is no Java Machine. :p

Follow this link only if you want to install Java on Windows XP:

Ohhh I see...yes I had a similar problem upon reformatting my computer.

Well now I'm baffled!

It seems that every time I reformat my Hard Drive, and reinstall Win XP Home I can do everything fine....except after restarting it when it crashes.

Just don't tell me its the motherboard...

Just pick the damn thing up and throw on the floor a few times...

You gotta let it know who's boss :)

You know... I've thought of that...and it has worked on other computers before....

But there is one option left.... The obvious one....

The obvious option? The one stated in post number 6? :D

Is that pronounced like "Fish"?

Leeloo Mina

I think it's pronounced like fish but with a P as in pot sound instead of the f :p

"Ph" can be pronounced like an "F". And given the lack of vowels, just about anything is possible.

A JVM is included in XP service pack 1. Even if Sun created Java, I have not really liked how their JDK and VM works. It caused a few crashing problems for me.

Oh, I thought that had already been mentioned! ^_^;

Yes, you can get it with WinXP SP1.

If you want to actually pay for WinXP SP1, instead of just downloading Java Virtual Machine for free, that is. :) Of course there is always the option of piracy, but that is very wrong! Never ever pirate software! ;)

All Microsoft service packs are a free download. Even someone as low down the geek tree as myself knows that.

Really? I remember them charging for Service Packs when I was using Windows 2000... Hm. Well, I checked their site just to be sure and you're right. I really remember them charging for a while, though.

I just consulted with the real geek of the house and he confirms that you only pay for service packs if you order them on CD, which is apparently a small and resonable cover charge for mailing and media.

However, they have always been availible for download for free if you didn't want to pay that and have been since the days of NT 3.51 / Win 95b. Thence, you have never been forced to pay if you didnt want to.

Well, I can't argue with that. :)

You watered the tree, then you tried to set fire to it?

For people with broadband, it pretty much definitely free. Anyone with broadband should have no problem in downloading the update. If you on 56k though it's likely to be a real chore. As well as being able to order them on CD they can be found on loads of magazine cover disks and they dont cost much.

A lot of help you all are!
:p

Oh well I've narrowed it down to either the AMR Modem, Motherboard, or Hard Drive. So if I put all three up as targets which one will you shoot down first!

Remember, it boots fine, but does not work well after restarting!
