Stealing of?

Resident Evil? Seems to be. Or Final Fanstasy? Whatever. I think it is a bit blatant from something - but it written so god awful, it gives me a headache to read.

One of the Resident Evil games. I'm not familiar with the details pertaining, but the character's name, S.T.A.R.S., and Umbrella Corporation were all mentioned, and I know those are from R.E.

Just trying to see if this post has a shred of creative lisence. I don't think we can count the bad spelling.

Hey, as long as Ninjai doesn't find his way in there.... :rolleyes

Hang on, you want originality while posting at a STAR WARS ROLEPLAYING BOARD? Can we say hypcrotical? :)

:lol :lol

But there is a point made by Charley. Any RE players here?

ReaperFett

I dont see the point. So some people use existing names etc. Does it matter?

It's not verbatim, but it's pretty close. If anything, it's a horrible mish-mash of genres.

Fett: We're creating and roleplaying our characters in a Mythos. We're not just taking the movies and putting them to text, verbatim. We've had this discussion before.

ok, so long as its not ripped word-for-word, then I'm fine.

ReaperFett

IMO If it steals text, then yes it is stealing. But names? Not so for me.

Nupraptor
Nov 23rd, 2002, 01:26:39 PM
It's not just names. It looks like the person(s) are trying to duplicate the RE story exactly, without even trying to adapt it to the SW Universe. That's just how it appears to me, anyway.

It's kind of borderline right now, IMO. Keep an eye on it, and consider reminding those involved in the thread about the plagerism policy.

I was looking at that the other day and didn't like the look of it back then and still don't now. I mean there seems to be very little use of creative liscence; the identical name, the use of the groups S.T.A.R.S and the Umbrella Corp. I don't like it at all and think we need to seriously crack down on this sort of thing lest it begins to run rampant.

It's when it is blatently taking numerous parts of an already-established creative medium and integrating them into your roleplaying that I would consider it bad form. Say for example she only used the name Jill Valentine and used the plot for inspiration substituting S.T.A.R.S for the NRSF and Umbrella for something else, like the Imperial Biological-Research Division. I think action should be taken now otherwise we might end up asking this person to change numerous details in this ongoing roleplay thus wasting her time and the time of those who contribute to the thread.

You would have only had to have modified the names and premise slightly and I think everyone would have missed it and no question asked.

Well.....

Guess a notice has to be placed up on this issue.

What neds to be addressed -

- Copyright legalities and fair use

That what we do here is in breach of copyright and even trademarks, however there are fair use clauses that allow us to do this. Thence, we will not bite the hand that feeds us, else we suffer thate wrath of the copyright holder. Other acceptible useages is satire and reporting.

- Plagerism

Is not fair use and is illegal in any form.

- The fact it's known people from LucasArts have looked the board over before. Others could be watching.

So Id have to change my name?

TheHolo.Net
Nov 25th, 2002, 07:50:34 PM
Nope, as far as SW copyrights go, using their intellectual property in such a way that is not an exact representation of their own (ie: we aren't writing their scripts as our own) then we are covered by the clauses within our copyright statement.

Using the intellectual property of other things non Star Wars related is risky.

Its sort of exciting to know that people from LucasArts have been to the board. :)

What primarily bothers me about this is not the obvious stealing but rather the "Why are you allllways picking on me??" attitude. Jill (or whoever plays her) just doesn't seem to get the concept that we're not attacking her/him, we just can't have direct copies of something. Why do these people keep doing this and acting surprised?

Why do these people keep doing this and acting surprised?

Because they're stupid?

=p That was a rhetorical question.

-straightens up and looks around, notices that his eyes are level with everyone else's knees. Tosses shovel over his shoulder, and it smacks another mod with a loud clang.-

Oops. Maybe I should stop digging that hole...

Heh heh... yeah, it was. Oh well. Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

ReaperFett
Nov 27th, 2002, 02:52:26 AM
I think the thing is that no matter how we see it, to them that could be a lot of work put in.

Ryla Relvinian
Nov 27th, 2002, 11:31:14 AM
The only large amount of work was for the typing of the post, not the original idea.

ReaperFett

Thats what I mean though. They put the effort in, and get criticised (for valid reasons or not).

Morgan Evanar
Nov 27th, 2002, 11:42:54 AM
Well Fett, this is like protesting to the teacher about your brilliant essay on your dog when the assignment was to talk about your family's thanksgiving... it doesn't matter, because you did the wrong thing, and you were told before hand.

Sure you may have worked hard on it, and it may be absolutely brilliant, but you still get an "F". The assignment here is Star Wars, and the administration is letting them know that they're making "F"s.

The moral of the story is to pay attention.

Sanis Prent
Nov 27th, 2002, 01:54:27 PM
Well even then...it could be as little as NAMES. I mean c'mon! Umbrella Corp. STARS. Jill Valentine. FFS, if you're that creatively hamstrung, use pig latin
