Yeah, they selling those swords for I think $100-200 at the house of Cultery. They have Frodo's, Gandalfs, and Aragorn's swords. With the 2 long knives that Legolas has. They also have all types of other swords from every fantasy movie ever.

They're cool and all... nice display pieces. The 'Sting' replicas are pretty well detailed.

I wouldn't try hacking at anything with it, though... :)

Narsil was/is a long sword. The next step up, in size terms, from that would be a bastard sword. The sword that Boromir uses is a little closer to a bastard sword, although not seemigly as heavy.

Baselard lies between the short and broadswords, there. But they were prettymuch confined to England and Germany in the post-Roman era.

I'll settle on my gladius.

Dark Lord Dyzm
Nov 22nd, 2002, 01:07:51 AM
Short Roman Swords... and Short Romans... 5ft nothing back then... Now days a Gladius looks like a overlarge knife compared to me. I need to get that German Battleaxe I saw on Ebay

Sanis Prent
Nov 22nd, 2002, 01:12:31 AM
yes, but by the time one of you can draw that thing in an effective swing, I can parry and stab you a half dozen times, or pull another weapon with my free hand and do the same.

Dark Lord Dyzm
Nov 22nd, 2002, 01:14:37 AM
Depends on how strong the person using the long sword is, depends on reach, and footwork. It ain't just chop and slash...

I want this (edit: AHHHH! Forgot how to do HTML and shrink it... To lazy to look up and remember)

What the heck kind of rediculous weapon is THAT? Sorry, it looks about as practical as a Klingon Bat'leth. Which, in a mock tournament, I defeated a guy who was using one (made of plastic) armed myself with a plastic rapier. It was no contest.

I am still lookign for a decent gladius or baselard, or possibly light double-edged sword. I currently posess two Jian type tai chi swords, a ninjato with a live edge, a beautiful reproduction Celtic shortsword modeled after one form about 790 AD, and a Civil War style saber with a high-carbon blade. Then I have all my wooden weapons as well, bokken, daggers, short staffs, long staff, and all manner of stuff. I go for practicality, and I hear you Sanis in what you say.

Though I still need a good katana, and a tulwar scimitar as well. Not to mention a kris dagger.

I have Kahless' Bat'leth. If you were strong enough, I bet you could properly use it. I, however, am not. :)

Gimli's axe isn't all that impressive, and definitely not worth the money. I like my own battle axe quite a bit.

My collection of swords, knives, axes and whips seems to scare off most visitors, for some reason.

My uncles a sword and historic gun collector, he has about 7 19th century hunting rifles, he has a american civil war musket pistol..man he has loads...he also collects replica and official swords, he actualy has a British Civil War sword (the real thing) and i think is going to start collecting the LOTR swords. His collection of weapons and so on add up to about £35.000, hes a real hardcore collector.

The reason a gladius is such a good choice is that it works well as either a big dagger or a small sword. Also its blade is in that "teardrop" shape, which allows you to place the maximum amount of mass into the business end of the swing. Special Ops in WW2 utilized this as well, creating a weapon that had enough mass to breach a German Fritz-style helmet. Not to mention, at 24 inches or less, the weapon is practical enough to be very mobile, without being cumbersome. I can take the thing, tuck it close, and do a forward roll without worrying about impaling myself on it.

Sejah, I've got a black steel Chinese dragon's kris :)

As for guns, I've got a pair of vintage antique Remmington shotguns that have never been fired, and are each worth a few thousand dollars :)

I like swords! But I like the Japanese Katanas better than the European swords.

Sanis Prent

Join the club. Trouble is, the katanas out there are mostly crap. You really have to want to shell out big bucks to buy a quality one. Anything that isn't folded steel, full tang, with a forward weighted balance isn't worth the money. Akrabbim's katana cost him 1,600, and his is the only one I've seen to actually use folded steel. You can see it in the blade's edge...there are hundreds of striations all along it, looking like abalone shell. Also, its composite, so the blade actually carries dual consistency in metal hardness. There's more give in the back, where its thicker and can support the energy transfer, and harder up front, to keep its edge. This keeps the blade from snapping on contact. You can whittle other peoples 200 dollar katanas with this thing. Its also got a genuine ray-skin grip, which has to be held to be believed.

I can't remember the length on it, but I'm thinking its a Musashi. Its as heavy as any 2 katanas that I've ever held, and that is a good thing. The force you can apply with a blade like that...especially something that is forward balanced, is incredible. However, that is the only katana I'd risk fighting with. I just wouldn't trust one of the 100-200 dollar ones. Besides, I'd rather use a wakisashi (sp). There's a lot of really cool things you can do with a short sword, IMO.

Man, it is very hard to find a decent Katana. If I had had $200 on me, I could ahve purchesed a WWII refitted katana a while ago. It had a gorgeous blade on it too, probably much older than the fittings. And for good new ones that are still hand-made and folded, check otu www.bugei.com
