Yesterday either Mum or I ended up going to a website that downloaded "Xzoomy" onto our computer without our knowing it. It's a search thing, but a very dirty one. We managed to get it cleaned out of the computer with Ad-Aware, but we're still getting bombarded with pop-ups and Xzoomy keeps trying to change our homepage on either desktop. :cry We've updated Ad-aware and done numerous searches about how we can get rid of all of it, but nothing really works.

So..As the tag says, HELP! >_<

You could give "Spybot - Search and Destroy" a try.

I got this crap called Xupiter, luckly, in this day and age, if we warn the company that if there stuff is downloaded on to my PC one more time, you will press legal action, and it will hold up in court. Same as junk mail.

If Spybot doesn't work, you can always go the old fashioned way, hacking and slashing at your system configuration files, and registry. ^_^ That can be a little risky sometimes, though...

Have you tried looking in your "program files" folder for it......if you delete its subfolder, then it shouldnt be able to function, that is, if its based outta there

*has never run into this progie b4*

Nah, I'd almost bet its registry related.

Step 1) Look in add / remove programs and see if it is there. Uninstall if it is

Step 2) Do a search in Exporer for this program. See if it exists, delete if it does.

Step 3) Unless you have played with the registry, get someone who knows what they are doing and clean out the registry of this program. Do NOT do this if you are inexperienced or uncertain. If you do not know how to backup your registry, then do not attempt on your own.

- OR -

Install the latest service packs for IE and OS to attempt to overwrite modified settings.

Surprised the anti-spyware packages aint cleaning it.

Spybot does a pretty good job of finding spyware in the registry as far as I can tell. I ran add aware then spybot and spybot found more stuff that I didn't need in the registry that had been installed by spyware type applications in the past, afterwards. :x

And a way to prevent this in the future - use Mozilla.

www.mozilla.org

Fact is I recommend everyone uses it. It blocks popups, you can refuse banners, it's configuable to blazes, pretty quick and the email client is not susceptible to the plethora of virus Outlook is. It also refuses to allow programs to load against your knowledge quite well. Use it. Now. This IS better than IE.

Popup protection is worth the download alone.

Tabular multi page browsing is also nice, but it eats memory just as fast as IE does. Damn memory leaks. :x

Are you using 1.1-stable or 1.2-beta?

1.1

Hmm, got a bit of memory creep in 1.1, never really noticed before.

(Flicks to 1.2 beta)

Its memory leak isn't as bad as what I saw in Opera though. :)

Or in Netscape 4 when it first came out. That was a dozy.

I really can't find a good reason to use Opera. I know a lot of people that swear by it, but it really seems like an inferior browser in many ways.

Funnily enough, I noticed a memory leak with earlier versions of Mozilla, but I've noted no such thing in 1.2b (which I've been quite happily using for quite some time now).

CPU and memory usage seem to be a bit more contained in 1.2-beta.

Memory is 4meg more used, but it's constant., while I agree 1.1 was slipping upwards bit by bit

Yeah, I'm not very impressed by Opera's (lack of some) CSS support.

Skips off to get his hands on Mozilla 1.2b

Opera's really slipped behind Mozilla

TheHolo.Net
Nov 21st, 2002, 12:27:37 AM
Hmmm, even in Moz 1.2b it seems to manage memory somewhat poorly. Every time I follow any link on a page, the amount of Memory Usage rises, but IE does that too. IE's memory usage drops drastically fairly often while I have yet to see Moz do that. I just wonder if Moz will top out and start overwriting active memory. o_O

EDIT: There goes Moz now. The memory usage is falling occasionally now. :)

Gurney Devries

Hmm... It's been staying at a fairly steady 21-22mb of memory usage, for me.

TheHolo.Net
Nov 21st, 2002, 12:44:53 AM
I'm pushing it fairly hard while testing having about 8 tabs going, and it appears to be holding between 35 and 37 MB of active Memory Usage. Time will tell if that stays consistent or not. I know IE gets higher after a while when I push it hard.

Yes I've noticed that Mo uses a disproportionately high amount of memory
