View Full Version : A minor little detail that has been bothering me...

...ever since I got here...

THE PLURAL OF "JEDI" IS "JEDI"!

Have you EVER heard them referred to in the books or movies as "Jedis"? The word "Jedi" is one of those words that doesn't take an "S" to become plural!

This rant was brought to you by your friendly neighborhood English minor.

I never thought about it, I always just write "Jedi" because some of the lines in the movies always said "The Jedi" even if it was meant for several instead of one. I self conciously did the correct thing, unless I remember wrong.

I've seen it pluralized in places as "virii"...sorta like "fungi". It always made me raise a brow.

Just as is Sith. There is no such word as Sithian and that has been one that gets on my nerves for years now... Sith and Jedi are both the same for singular and plural.

On the subject of plurality, the plural of mongoose is mongooses, not mongeese.

^_^; One thing that always amused me was that at TSE, we had Sith Lords.. But we didn't have Sith "Ladies". Nooo.. They made up the word "Sith Lordess". It was terrible, but..oddly, it sort of fit.

Besides, "Sith Lady" just sounds silly.

Nov 18th, 2002, 03:42:32 PM
yeah.

cos it should be sith lady, by the peerage, but that sounds daft....

ive seen people say "Sith Mistress" in other boards and stuff, but that [for some reason, in my twisted sick mind] souds... well, kinky. [shrugs]

lordess goes fine.

"Masteress" just sounds messed up, so of course they would use Mistress.

But, I do think that Lordess is better, made up or not.

I wouldn't go that far. Both "British" English and "American" English have exorbitant amounts of slang and colloquialisms. The English language, in general, is extremely verbose. That's why it's so difficult to learn.

That's possessive, Fett, not plural. :)

English as we know it today on either side of The Pond, is an unwieldy combination of Anglo-Saxon and Norman French with a ton of loan words from languages as varied as Latin and Arabic. No wonder it's a pain in the *whatever* to learn -- every rule has about ten exceptions.

That's why I like to say I majored in Anguish. :headache

Yeah, it wasnt so much a disagreement, more of a clarification for readers :)

I'd like to point out one of the main reasons that American English is often different.

Noah Webster.

Yes, he's the guy who wrote the original Webster's Dictionary. Words were changed in spelling, and other "American" versions of words were includer instead of their British counterparts as to distance the newly liberated America from England. He wanted us to be quite seperate, and so screwed over the English language.

That is not to say I don't Like American English; I use it every day, and am quite the satisfied customer with it.

Nooo! ^_^; You're a Mistress, as far as I know.. And I just mean as a ranking, "Sith Lady" would sound silly, whereas when it's used as more of a title, like "Lady Vader" then it sounds fine. :)
