I've gone with waaay too many road teams. I may end up changing some of these on Saturday. That St. Louis game was tough for me. I really think that with Faulk running the Rams should be able to beat SD. But SD's record isn't a fluke and neither was the Rams poor start. That's just a tough game for me to pick. Then there's the Chiefs and Niners. I may change that one too. Somebody finally slowed down the Chiefs last week and the Niners are probably going to do the same. Still... ah, I'll go with SF.

Did anyone call ATL/PIT to tie?

What do we do about that one?

And those damn Giants screwed me again. Actually, it's more of a case of the Vikings sucking, but a note for the rest of you, whatever I pick a future Giants game, pick the opposite!

Jedi Master Carr
Nov 10th, 2002, 04:46:14 PM
Darn, I was going to call that game a tie :p I think we should all get a tie since really nobody won the game, or I guess we count it as a loss.

ReaperFett

JMK
Nov 10th, 2002, 05:09:55 PM
I think we should all get a bonus win, or nothing. A tie for everyone wouldn't do anything for the contest, if we keep it limited to wins and losses it makes rankings easier. :)

Happens very rarely in Football, doesn't happen at all in College, anymore. This is the first tie in 5 years for the NFL.

Figrin D'an
Nov 10th, 2002, 06:10:48 PM
IMO, tie games should either count as a win for everyone, or a loss for everyone for the purposes of the weekly picks. Having a seperate "tie" column would be pretty pointless. I don't want to make this decision for everyone, but when I do the tallys later tonight, I'll just count it as a win for everyone until we make a final call on it.

JMK
Nov 10th, 2002, 06:34:49 PM
I agree Figrin. This contest is hard enough to decide without giving out losses for not even losing!

Figrin D'an
Nov 10th, 2002, 06:50:45 PM
New England just saved everyone of us from a loss... no one took the Bears in that game...

JMK
Nov 10th, 2002, 06:56:53 PM
Who would take the Bears, their season is now meaningless!

At least now I will at least tread water for the week. *phew*

How about Marc Bulger in St. Louis? 453 yds passing, 4 td's? You gotta be kidding me! It's pretty sad that Warner will get the ball back without question next week after this kid has reeled in 4 wins for them.

Figrin D'an
Nov 10th, 2002, 07:18:52 PM
What happens if Warner struggles when he returns and it costs the Rams a game or two? St. Louis fans will scream to put Bulger back in, even though Warner has been the league MVP two of the last three years.

I'm not saying that will happen, but you never know... at the beginning of last season, no one thought that Drew Bledsoe would be benched in favor of a second-year player with no starts, then traded at the end of the season.

JonathanLB
Nov 10th, 2002, 07:21:08 PM
Warner was playing lousy before he was injured anyway. I'd let this guy keep the football... lol.

Wow NE won?! Holy crap... I just turned it off as they were down by far too much for me to consider it realistic they'd make a comeback. Phew, wow that was lucky. This will be a good week then for me, likely. 'Cept those idiotic Chargers blowing it to the Rams. Oh well that is made up by the NE victory, so I cannot complain.

Niners are still rolling. Not a very pretty victory, but I thought the defense looked every bit as good as I've been saying they are. They held one of the league's top offenses to just 13 points. That is dang impressive.

JonathanLB
Nov 10th, 2002, 07:24:56 PM
As for the tie, yeah I think a win for everyone or just NOT counting it whatsoever for everyone would make the most sense. Either one, but yeah, adding a tie column is kind of pointless really.

I, uh, am embarrassed to say but I didn't realize that ties still existed in the NFL! I was pretty sure the rules had changed since then and there couldn't be ties anymore. My bad, lol. I've just never personally seen one in so long that I figured they were non-existent. That's why I kept looking at the score of that game on my TV and thinking, "Umm... hmm maybe I'm not reading that right, or it's not over..."

jjwr
Nov 10th, 2002, 08:07:03 PM
Tie's definetly aren't very common, they used to be so common place but with the soccer style kickers and explosive offenses usually getting one sort of score in is a given.

As they said the last one was in 1997 and there were two that year, I don't recall how long it had been before that.

Great win for the 49ers, most of their wins so far had been very lackluster, this one will go a long way to proving them a very credible 1st place team and give their record a bit more merit.

Man those Pats.....I thought they were gonna blow it. Their play calling for the first 2 1/2 quarters was just retarded. Luckily the Bears offense wasn't doing anything either so I knew the Pats had a chance as long as they could get their offense going.

Count the Tie as a win or loss, if everyone gets it then it won't hurt or help everyone.

That Rams win was impressive as well, I had picked them and was cringing as I thought they would blow it, very impressive win. The big key for them will be whether or not Faulk is seriously injured.

Jedieb
Nov 10th, 2002, 10:20:06 PM
I was thinking about that tie earlier today. I thought it would be best just to ignore the game and only count 13 games. Counting it as a win for everyone is fine with me. It's much fairer than counting it as a loss and it won't make a difference in the end. The Steelers really blew that game. I was flipping around watching a bunch of games and I stopped checking in on that game because Maddox was having such a great game that I figured the Steelers defense had more than enough to win the game. Same thing with the Rams and Chargers. I was regretting switching my pick to the Rams, but that onside kick and the late TD's were amazing.

Did anyone else see that game? Did you see the little side line encounter between Warner and Bulger? I could have sworn I saw Bulger blow off Warner and even push him away when Warner tried to say something to him right after the game winning TD. Warner even got a little pissed off at him. I think there may be trouble when Warner comes back. Bulger was just amazing. The Rams had 4 turnovers and he wasn't responsible for any of them. This Rams resurgence could make the final game of the season between St. Louis and SF very interesting.

Jedieb
Nov 10th, 2002, 10:34:56 PM
Friggin' Ray Lucas. He takes a sack on a 2-minute drive with no time outs and then he underthrows the last pass of the game. He had about 4 passes that could have easily been intercepted tonight. Fieldler may come back to a team desperately scrambling for a Wild Card spot.

Denver looked pretty bad tonight, especially considering they had two weeks to prep for the game. Losing Shannon Sharpe to injury didn't help, but still... not very impressive at all. The Raiders get right back into the AFC West race.

Denver looked powerless to stop the Oakland offense that seems to have found itself once again...

Figrin D'an
Nov 11th, 2002, 11:38:45 PM
Oakland still isn't running the football, and it's going to cost them again later this season, mark my words. There will be games when Gannon is off and the recievers have trouble with good coverage secondaries. If the Raiders can't run the ball to free up passing lanes and loosen the coverage, they'll be screwed. They might make the playoffs (although Denver and San Diego are probably the best two in the division at the moment), but won't get much beyond that.

That Oakland offense seemed awefully ridiculous. How Denver could not stop all those passes gets me, you know they're gonna pass and its almost always these quick outs so sit on the routes, bump the receivers at the line, do something. They were always wide open. When Denver had the ball and completed a short pass there were always 3 Oakland defenders swarming.

Oakland played a good game and Denver laid a huge egg on defense and wasn't too impressive on offense either.

The way this year has gone everyone is having a game or two like this, so it really doesn't mean a whole lot. Bye weeks this year have been killer, everyone is losing off their bye's, ok not everyone but a lot of teams. San Diego laid the huge egg vs Jets, the Pats did the same vs Denver.

JMK
Nov 12th, 2002, 07:44:47 AM
Dolphins vs Green Bay as well.

Jedieb
Nov 12th, 2002, 08:42:56 AM
This season is just ridiculous. Every time some team looks like it's ready to lay claim to the title of 'best team in the conference or division', it falls flat, and on its face. Philly, Oakland, Miami, San Diego, etc. The few teams that have been consistent have been Green Bay, San Francisco, and the Bungles. And nobody wants the kind of consistency the Bungles have.

So I guess we can expect Green Bay to lay an egg sometime soon. Green Bay is really prepping itself for a Superbowl run. They can clinch their division pretty soon and they may have home field advantage locked up if they can avoid the slumps the other frontrunners have. I don't think there's another team that could benefit from home field as much as the Packers. Do you think the Bucs, Saints, or Niners want to go to Lambeau field in January?

JMK
Nov 12th, 2002, 09:43:46 AM
No one wants to go to Lambeau field. Ever.

jjwr
Nov 12th, 2002, 11:10:31 AM
Problem with Green Bay is they're not as good as their record, they've played like 3 teams with winning, lost to one(New Orleans) and the other two were New England and Miami who boht layed eggs against them. Early in the season they almost lost their first few games and pulled them out do to some serious luck.

They've got a great record and are playing well but I could see them laying a huge egg like they did last year against St. Louis, 6 interceptions or something like that.

Figrin D'an
Nov 12th, 2002, 12:00:27 PM
Honestly though, who in the league is playing better than Green Bay right now? The defense had some issues early in the season, and they had a lot of injuries to deal with, but the reserves played extremely well, and now they're healthy again. The offense is on fire right now. They play Tampa Bay, San Fransisco and Buffalo down the stretch of the season, so they'll have plently of opportunities to get wins against good teams. They've already beaten Atlanta, New England and Miami, which is as good a resume as any other team has. Every year, you can look at the legit contenders, and they always have a game or two that was a close scrape in which they got a lucky bounce. In the end, a win is a win.

Every team has some chinks in their armor, because everyone has lost at least once or has had a close game that they barely squeaked out. Give it a few more weeks, as the playoff picture starts to unfold a little more and we'll have a better idea of who the best teams are and who is peaking at the right time.

Ishan Shade
Nov 12th, 2002, 12:34:28 PM

Jedieb
Nov 12th, 2002, 12:41:53 PM
I'm with Figrin on Green Bay. The problem is though that I've had the same feeling about a bunch of other teams this season. Anyone who saw Oakland for the first time last night would have trouble believing they'd just lost 4 straight. Even though they didn't run, they still beat up a good Denver team IN Denver. Those 3 tough games the Pack have should tell us a lot about them. Who knows how this crazy season is going to end. The team that gets hot in December could very well win it all, regardless of who has home field.

But man, you know St. Louis doesn't want to face the elements of Lambeau field in Jan. I don't see Favre throwing 6 INT's against anyone if he has home field advantage. I think the Bucs are a team to watch. If GB falters and Tampa keeps piling up wins with an improved offense then they could make it to the Superbowl. But if they have to go to GB, well we all know how Tampa does below 30 degrees F.

jjwr
Nov 12th, 2002, 03:04:57 PM
I'm not saying GB sucks by any means I think just like every other team this year they don't look incredibly impressive. They've gotten their wins and taken the games they should have, thats a credit to them. Unlike the past few years there are no teams which just look nasty, no St. Louis steamroller or a ugly Pittsburgh team.

Green Bay will be tough down the stretch, one thing to watch is the injury to their RB's and the big rushing yards they gave up this past game. Their division fell apart so thats a easy playoff for them, just curious where they finish up after all is said and done.

JMK
Nov 12th, 2002, 08:50:22 PM
We never talked about it here, but the 500th MNF was a huge one! Rice makes his 200th catch, Gannon sets a record with 23 (or 21) consecutive completions.

And those yellow coats....my eyes hurt.

Glad to hear that the Rams are gonna give Bulger the ball for at least one more week.

And one more testament to how underrated Fiedler really is:
He has a 27-11 record as a starter (.711) which I think is second in the NFL among active QB's.

I thought the yellow/gold coats were a nice touch... a nod to Cossell, Meredith and Gifford. I wouldn't want to see them every week, but they were appropriate for that game.

Bummer, 9-5 is pretty good though, I cannot complain too much. I'd like to finish out the season with 9 wins per week, hehe, that would be nice.

I'm sort of climbing back after those first two weeks or so there were pretty brutal.

I do not agree with the ESPN rankings having Denver above the 49ers (2 vs. 4), obviously. I realize Denver beat the 49ers, but that was MANY weeks ago, and I think the 49ers looked pretty mediocre at the start of the season, but they have looked a lot more impressive, notably on defense, in the last three weeks (three wins). Actually their defense has never been bad this year, it's just they are playing well lately even despite close games, they're getting those wins, which is what counts.

The Bucs are so low on these ranking charts too, pretty unfair given their record, IMO. Not to mention Miami is way overranked. I don't care how good someone THINKS they are, the fact is their record isn't very good whatsoever and they don't deserve to be ranked in the top 10 anymore. There are 10 better teams, until Miami proves they are actually legitimate through winning some more games. I realize they've had problems, but they need to get it together here.

Fun thing about these rankings, its just their opinions so we can ignore them with impunity. Quite often I disagree with them, they're fun to read and because they're on ESPN some think they're official but they really don't mean squat.

I liked hearing all of the old theme music from MNF telecasts of the past. I've been watching MNF since the late 70's. Does anyone else remember the forgotten seasons with Joe Namath or OJ in the booth? At least I'm fairly certain the murderer was in the booth, this old mind does play tricks on me.

"Do you think the Bucs, Saints, or Niners want to go to Lambeau field in January?"

No, lol, I do not think so. I honestly don't even know if the Packers are beatable at Lambeau Field in the playoffs, i.e. at that time of year.

The Niners are a very good team this year (I'll call them a great team if they end the season with 12 wins and actually make it somewhere in the playoffs... but...). Nonetheless, Green Bay vs. San Francisco in Green Bay would not be cool at all. I've seen it before. It's ugly.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Packers, haha. They used to be my second favorite team, and I really like Favre, but they are the Niners absolute #1 rival, not the Cowboys, not the Rams, it's always been Green Bay for so long. They have knocked the 49ers out of the playoffs way too many times, and I watched a lot of those. Of course, the greatest game I watched was...

"Three seconds left, Young back to pass, he stumbles, the pass is to Owens, IN THE END ZONE, OWENS HAS IT! NINERS WIN! NINERS WIN!!!"

That was just great, the announcer was going crazy, game-winning touchdown that is still considered one of the most significant to the Niners. It is like "The Catch -- Part 2" :)

Wow, there was never a better day to be a Niners fan. I thought it was all over, I had basically no hope left, and somehow they snatched victory from the hands of defeat (what a great cliche). It was a beautiful thing. Quite possibly one of the greatest games I've ever seen...
