Monday Night

Bye Week: Denver, Kansas City, New Orleans, Carolina

I decided to put this up a day earlier than normal, since I'm bored out of mind right now. It'll give everyone an extra day to second guess themselves... ;)

Closing in on the half way point of the season, and no clear-cut top teams yet... if I had to pick a few legit contenders at this point, they would be:

NFC: Green Bay, New Orleans, San Francisco, Philadelphia
AFC: San Diego, Miami, Denver, Pittsburgh

Tampa Bay is decent, but once again, they need to rely on their defense... it's still "Buc-Ball" in Tampa, despite Gruden's presence. Oakland, after the fast start, has shown their age the past few weeks... if they can't turn things around and make a run yet this year, they're done as annual contender until they rebuild. New England is all but done... they might not make the playoffs, with Miami and Buffalo being stronger teams in the AFC East.

Of course... next week, this could all change... :lol

I don't know JMK... the Dolphins might have a chance in that game. Favre will play, that's pretty much a given... but, his mobility might be hampered some by the brace on his knee. He could get hit a few times if that is indeed the case... the other factor is that the Packers are a very pedestrian 5-6 with Favre at the helm coming off of a bye week.

Personally, I'm going to take Green Bay (for obvious reasons). But it could be a very close game. Lucas has to play well, though, because Williams won't be able to carry the load himself.

JMK
Oct 30th, 2002, 09:46:13 PM
That's just it, I don't think very highly of Lucas. Even if he does play a strong game, who beats Green Bay at Lambeau? Besides, its almost time for Miami's annual mid-season swan dive. If Fiedler were starting, I'd think a little longer about it. Carter too, I haven't bothered to check if he was going to play. But I don't know how much of an impact he will have in his first game back.

Well at least my Chiefs are off, picking their games are really hard. I actually think they are a playoff contender if they can go 6-2 in the second half they might be able to get one of those two wild cards.

I am not posting my picks just yet.....I have to think first. I can't believe you JMK, GOING AGAINST THE DOLPHINS IS UNFORGIVABLE!!! :D (Just kidding)

I think they are going to win this one actually. The Offensive line of the Pack is banged up and the DL of the Dolphins is playing very well. Lucas has to show up, but I have confidence. And Carter is playing so I think he's a threat too. He's played against Favre alot in Minnesota so he may have in an inside track on how to stop him (I hope). :D

I know, it hurt me to do it, but business is business. :p 1st place is calling!
I don't have much confidence in Lucas right now, especially at Lambeau field. But if the Dolphins win, I won't feel bad about being wrong...

I'm rolling the dice with Miami. I'm betting that last poor performance and 2 weeks of practice time will allow Lucas to rebound. It's a gamble to against Green Bay at Lambeau, but if you risk big you can win big. Go Fins!

Wow me and you, jjwr were the only ones to pick NE. Also I went 7-1 in the first 8 games, not doing too well in the second half, I never would have picked the Jets, what happened to SD. I should have picked the Rams nearly did, Washington should win and hopefully S.F will hold on. That will be good for my Chiefs if the two teams in their division lost, the would be tied with the Raiders and only 2 games back of SD and Denver.

Above .500 by a few games now, hopefully I can move up to 55% at least, jeez.

I wouldn't have ever thought to pick the Jets, I mean come on, nobody could see that coming.

Although, I must admit I am quite pleased to see you guys who choose Oakland lose a pick. Not smart. Especially, ahem, changing your pick from the Niners to the Raiders. The Niners totally owned them that game, in time of possession, in everything, except points, and the Niners really screwed around a lot, including that **** Cortez, FIRE HIM, and his two missed field goals. I really do hate him, and this isn't a new thing, I've hated him since I first saw him "play."

Anyway, oh well, not every day you get to have a second chance in life, literally, and he got it, and he made good. So that was something at least. I bet he felt good about it, and he probably avoided a good beating/raping in the locker room too had they have lost. It would have been 100% his fault, not even 99%, just 100% his fault.

Garcia proved what a great QB he is in that game, though, as if there was any doubt.

I said 3 weeks ago, if you will all remember, that the Niners were better than the 4-0 Raiders (at the time they were undefeated) and I said the Niners would beat them when they played them, and -- wow -- what do you know? I was right. Niners rule. :)

Too bad I switched my pick (as I was writing it) from the Rams to the Cardinals, that was probably not smart, but I'm glad the Rams won because now the Cards are a few games back.

Go Pack Go! :)

Dominant performance by Green Bay... Miami didn't have a chance in that game. Lucas actually made some good throws, but the receivers were pretty bad. The back breaker was the 89 yard pick-six by Darren Sharper.

I'm working on a mid-season breakdown (both for the picks and the season in general). I'll post it sometime in the next few days. Just for kicks, though, here are the overall records and standings around the league at the halfway point.

NFC North:

Green Bay 7-1
Detroit 3-5
Chicago 2-6
Minnesota 2-6

NFC East:

Philadelphia 6-2
NY Giants 4-4
Washington 4-4
Dallas 3-6

NFC South:

Tampa Bay 7-2
New Orleans 6-2
Atlanta 5-3
Carolina 3-5

NFC West:

San Francisco 6-2
Arizona 4-4
St. Louis 3-5
Seattle 2-6

AFC North:

Pittsburgh 5-3
Cleveland 4-5
Baltimore 3-5
Cincinnati 1-7

AFC East:

Miami 5-3
Buffalo 5-4
New England 4-4
NY Jets 3-5

AFC South:

Tennessee 4-4
Indianapolis 4-4
Jacksonville 3-5
Houston 2-6

AFC West:

San Diego 6-2
Denver 6-2
Kansas City 4-4
Oakland 4-4

Looks like the NFC is going to be pretty easy, GB basically has won their division, I don't think Detriot is going to challenge for it (they could win 6 games though which would be a surprise) Looks like Philadelphia should win their division as well. The close races are the South with Tampa and New Orleans and Atlanta (who is only one and half game back). The NFC West is close too, SF has a game edge right now. The AFC is going to be insane, Pittsburg should win the North, the East is going to be interesting New England still has a chance, I am not sure about Buffalo, I have a feeling they might take a dive. The south is going to be the closest, anybody get the feeling the winner of that division could 8-8 and win it? The AFC West well it looks like the Raiders are about ready to implode, SD I think won't win that division should still win a wild card unless they totally break down in the second half. KC is the wild card, if their defense keeps playing like it did last week they could win the division or at least make the playoffs.

JonathanLB
Nov 5th, 2002, 05:16:25 AM
No that is wrong, Arizona is TWO games behind the Niners, NOT one.

Check that again my friend, 4-4...

They were 4-3 heading into the game vs. the Rams, which was one behind the Niners at 5-2, and the Niners won, the Cards lost, they are two games back.

Go to NFL.com if you want, but that is just wrong.

There is only one winning team in the Niners' division, and that is the Niners. All other teams are .500 or less.

The Dolphins really do need Fiedler back. Lucas has shown me nothing of value, even if he is a backup.

jjwr
Nov 5th, 2002, 08:42:55 PM
The absense of Fieldler has kinda proved to everyone that maybe he's better then we've given him credit for. He's not going to sling it like Warner or Favre and win the game but he can definetly manage the game and put out solid numbers and lead the team.

Figrin D'an
Nov 5th, 2002, 10:31:16 PM
Miami needs to find it's offense... and quick. New England proved that it isn't dead yet, and Buffalo is still in the thick of the division race. With at least one, and potentially BOTH wild cards coming out of the AFC West, the Dolphins have no room for error. The next 3 weeks are going to be crucial for a lot of teams, to either get back into the thick of the playoff races, or to seize control of certain divisions.

Jedi Master Carr
Nov 6th, 2002, 12:34:18 AM
The Wild Card race should be interesting, right now here is the order in the AFC
Denver/San Diego 6-2
Buffalo 5-4
New England 4-4
Kansas City 4-4
Oakland 4-4
Indianapolis/ Tennessee 4-4
Cleveland 4-5
Baltimore 4-5

These are basically the contenders right now I think San Diego will win one of them the other is really up for grabs. KC could get if they play better defense.

jjwr
Nov 6th, 2002, 02:58:06 PM
I think the AFC west will take a wild card and the 2nd will come from the AFC East, just a matter of who.

The Patriots/Bills or Dolphins could all realistically win the Divionsion and the same could be said for the Bronco's/Chargers and Chiefs.

Chiefs are iffy as they're defense is horrible.

Pats have a easy schedule down the stretch compared to their first half so hopefully they'll go on a nice run. We'll see!
