RIP Richard Harris

He died today at the age of 72, he was a great actor and will surely be missed.

Holy crap, I was reading the paper just this morning, literally, and in the entertainment section was a blurb about him having cancer. The gist of the story was that he said he would absolutely be there for the filming of Harry Potter 3 and would bleeping kill Chris Columbus if he dared think of re-casting him.

I figured with a statement like that he would have been in better health, but apparently not.

He will be missed. :(

Richard Harris Dead at age 72

Golden Globe-winning actor succumbs to Hodgkin's disease in London.

Classically trained actor Richard Harris died today at his London home his family has reported. The Golden Globe-winning actor, most recently known for his role as Headmaster Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movies, had been receiving treatment for Hodgkin's disease. He was 72 years old.

Born in Limerick, Ireland, in 1932, Harris studied classical acting at the London Adacemy of Music and Dramatic Art and made his stage debut in 1957 with The Quare Fellow. He then moved to the big screen making his feature debut in Alive and Kicking, but it was his supporting roles for which he was more recognizable with films such as The Guns of Navarone in 1961 and 1962's The Mutiny on the Bounty. Then, in 1964, he earned his first Oscar nomination as coal miner hoping to become an athlete in This Sporting Life.

Not only was Harris becoming a movie star, but he was also making a name as a reputable stage actor. He took over the role of King Arthur from Richard Burton in Lerner and Lowe's musical version of Camelot and then tackled the role again when it was brought to the big screen; a role that won him a Golden Globe award. Camelot also showed off Harris' vocal abilities as the Camelot soundtrack became a bigger success than the film itself.

He soon used his vocal talents and released the long-play single "MacArthur Park," which went on to become an international smash and just missed knocking the Beatles "Hey Jude" out of the top spot. This led the actor to also have a somewhat successful recording career.

Through the '70s and '80s Harris began to appear in more in more supporting roles on the silver screen, but then in 1990 he made a return to stardom with Jim Sheridan's The Field, which earned him both an Oscar and a Golden Globe nomination.

The '90s saw him play a variety of roles, a lot of them as villains, and in 2000 he appered in the Oscar-winning Gladiator for Ridley Scott. The early 2000s brought Harris to a whole new audience. In addition to Gladiator, Harris also appeared in Warner Bros.' Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone as Hogwarts' Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, introducing the actor to children all over the world. He will also be seen in the upcoming sequel to that film, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Harris had been twice divorced. He is survived by three sons.
