Obi-Wan Kenobi
For all of focus that is placed on the tragedy that is Anakin's fall from grace, Obi-Wan is very much a tragic character, who struggles to redeem himself through Anakin's own son. I'll always first think of the wise sage that Alec Guiness portrayed in the original trilogy when I think of Obi-Wan, but Ewan McGregor is acquiting himself quite nicely in the prequels thus far. Episode III will contain some of the character's most pivotal moments, though, so I await it with great anticipation.

1. Exar Kun
2. Chewbacca
Exar Kun is/was the man.. the dark man. As for Chewbacca... well Wookies have been known to rip people's arms off from time to time.

I like Corran Horn, then Talon Karrde. I don't enjoy reading the books about the main charachters, they can never capture the charachter's right. I love reading the books on sub charachter, I.E. Corran, Myn, Kyle, Ooral. They offer new excitement. To bad Micheal Stackpole didn't make any stories about Rogue Squadren during the Thrawn Campaigns.
He also writes a awesome fantasy book. Anyone read Fortress Draconis?

Uhhh.... no. Yes, I agree with you Figrin. I have always liked Kenobi, but Palpatine is, IMHO, the coolest character. In all reality, the movies are not about anakin, or luke, or ben, or leia, or amidala... they're about Palpatine, and how he manipulates everybody to gain power. :D

Yoda and Han.
Yoda for all his greatness (especially in Ep II).
Han for his dialogue and attitude - "We're all fine here now, thankyou...how are you?" - my favourite line in the movie! :)

Palpatine is a great villian, and an intriguing character, but the movies are not about him. Sorry, I have to disagree with that. He's ultimately a means to an end... providing the spark for Anakin's fall and setting up his eventual redemption when Luke refuses to succumb to the same temptations. Cool character, yes... just not the crux of the story.

Frigin: Sure he is. Just look harder for the minor points that .. point that out. :p
Palpy is my fav. Jango and Kit fisto are up there, but only because they = B.A.
Han's a decent character.. his lines are some of the best in the movies.
But what about the comic relief in the OT? C-3PO & R2-D2 anyone? :D

Palpy plays an important role in the backstory, but he is, effectively, a plot device. A very good one, yes... but still, as I said, a means to an end... It's not his story...
I'm not going to get into a lot of detail on this, 'cause I'll end up writing an essay if I do. Suffice to say, it all stems from the concept of quest heroism. Anakin and Luke are both fit the mold of the hero, Anakin being a tragic one, Luke a reluctant and untimely one. They grow, they evolve, they make mistakes, and they surprise us. Palpatine does not grow, he does not evolve significantly, and his base role is very predictable. He's a wonderful villian, and the way in which his trechery progresses is quite well done... but he is not the focus of the story.

Han is my favorite, followed closely by R2 D2, who didn't even need to speak Basic for us to enjoy his humor. :)

From the movies: Darth Vader. He defines what a screen villan should be.
From the EU: Grand Admiral Thrawn. I just love the way he was portrayed.

I guess, for clarification, I would say that Palpy is the center of the wheel of characters who revolve around him. He is a great character simply because while heros rise and fall he remains the constant, unwavering puppetmaster. Yes, of course the main characters are Luke and Ani and whatever, but the central figure, at least in terms of plot movement, is Palpy. None of the characters do anything that either he does not know about or is somehow responsible for.

I missed this thread.. hate to bring it back to top but.. ^_^;
My favorite characters from the orginal movies were - Han, Yoda Boba Fett and Chewie.
Luke was too whiny for me, Leia was just a tad to prissy and Darth Vader was cool.. but something about him.. I dont know.
From the prequals - Qui-gon and Mace Windu.. no question about it.
EU - Mara Jade.. she is just cool ^_^ And.. umm.. I know there's someone else.. >_<
