View Full Version : You Americans are weird...

I was called a "country bumpkin" today... First of all, I've lived in remote coastal towns all my life, where your only two job options are fishing or logging (which I exlpained beforehand to this person). Secondly, I am not a 'bumpkin'... I will never be a 'bumpkin'

And for the last time, they are 'runners' not 'tennis shoes'!

Pal, when you're in the US, be prepared for some weird stuff.

And Hippopottomonstroseesquipedliaphobia would technically be the fear of very large horses in rivers that speak in long or lengthy words.

Don't Like Pizza??? Pizza is the SOUL food of the States! And you must remember, each state is technically a seperate country, which has tied itself into a Union. So you get different people from state to state. Us West Coast people are far more advanced then any East Sider. OOOO! I shiney Penny!!!

My experience with west coast people implies otherwise :)

Movies - 90% crap

Software - 95 % crap

Planes - Cool agreed

Surf - Hate surf

Music - 95% crap

Nintendo/Sony of America - Passable

Microsoft - You have to be kidding. THAT'S GOOD?!?!?

Volcano's - I dont know about you, but I sure as hell aint living 1000 km with a volcano

Real Mountains - Fair call

Rain Forest - Fair call

Desert - That's a good thing????

Dyzm, be a bit more tactful.

After all, they have New York, Washingto D.C. The Smithsonian, the National Geographic headquarters. Hewlett Packard, Intel, Gateway, and most all the US car manufacturers. Not to mention Maine lobster.

Jsut because something is based somewhere, doesn't mean it's influence isn't able to be spread. If Nintendo were only to produce goods for this area, then they would be a failure. Besides, they're based out of Japan, so, don't go preaching that a lot fo what they do is decided here.

And Marcus, yes, the desert is a good thing.

well, i live in a little town in north-east England,
got none of the above, cept its kinda hard to move around without seeing the sea. admittidley its the north sea, so its a bit cold to swim in in winter, but in summer its just fine.

Hey, we west-coasters are cool! We get to wear comfy socks with our sandals into the dead of winter. We also get more seasons than the average location. For example, we get "Rainy," "Not very rainy," "Light Showers," "Hail," "The Mountain is Out Today" and of course "Traffic Maintenance." Oh the thrilling joys of Orygun.

Marcus, question:
Does generalizing or stereotyping makes one sound completely unintelligent and uncultured?

Another question:
Are you an American-hater?

Inquiring minds would like to know.

Helenias Evenstar
Oct 22nd, 2002, 07:11:00 AM
Culture? Marcus? The closest he knows about culture is yoghurt. He's a total yob. Strangely enough, I dont see anything that attacks or says hates America. I would agree with some of those assesments and I love Colorado to bits. That's where I lived for some years.

Why? Has he been shooting scared cows and chopping down tall poppies again?

But it does bring up a point.... Even if I have spend some time in the USA and in other places, I would take Cronulla in Sydeny any day. Beaches, great surfing, clean air.... a nice unit and surfing at dawn. Jog at dusk and maybe even a twilight swim.

* Sigh *

I have not been for a decent surf for too long

I tried surfing once, in Hawaii.

Of course the first thing the dude teaching me said was "If you see something swimming below you, don't fall off."

Kind of ruined the whole experience.

Marcus Telcontar

Why? Has he been shooting scared cows and chopping down tall poppies again?

:: Takes out gun and chain saw ::

Nope....... yet.

:evil

Generalisation - Australia is a bloody dry, hot place filled with crocodiles, kangaroos, koalas, Bogons and beer swillers and the scum is on the East Coast

It's quite correct.

Stereotype - Aussie males are yoobos who appreciate beer more than water, swear, are direct, sarcastic, caustic and are generally great mates to have

Again, true.

Nah, I dont hate Yanks. I do however hate 90% of the music, 95% of the movies, 95% of the software and Microsoft. I'd also wonder why anyone would live near a volcano and that goes for anywhere around the world, And I hate any beach, even Aussie ones. And deserts? No way. Live too close to one already.

As far as planes and the like go, Dyzm...most of the component work is done right here in Alabama. Huntsville is an aerospace mecca...thats pretty much all it exists for, is to house NASA, Lockheed-Martin, Redstone Arsenal, and a couple of dozen other aerospace and military contract firms :)

In space travel, there are only 4 real locations of interest. Huntsville, Houston, Canaveral, and Edwards.

Yeah, the shuttle lands in California. So what :)

Morgan Evanar
Oct 22nd, 2002, 11:21:23 AM
And it takes off from just 4 hours north of me?
Dyzm:
You fail, sir. Aerospace firms also exist on the east coast. Sure, the Apalachains are a bit long in the tooth, but anything above 5000 FT is deffinately a mountain. Also: we have better fishing.

Music and movies come from everywhere. Especially music. You hardly have a monopoly on that. You don't have Broadway, either.

Regardless, I like most of the people over there, except some people with extreme ego issues. *cough*

Also: we have better fishing

didn't take in to account Alaska? Did ya? That is West Coast!

Yes, movies are filmed all over the world, but When I say movies, I mean Hollywood produced. Which is majority. When I say music, I mean the record companines, when I say Airplanes I mean Boeing (Which was started in Seattle), Microsoft does suck, but then, most of the world uses it. Volcano's are just damn cool. You got hurricanes, we got Lahar's and lava flow. Except ours happens every 10,000 or so years, and not every other year/month.

Australia Scares me, I still want to visit, but having the largest concentration of deadly animals in the world freaks me out.

Last tid bit of Info. Washingon is powered by H2o, you will find no Coal, Oil, Or Nuke Plants in operation here. (There is a old Nukie half-way between Olympia and Portland, but it has been deactivated for the last 20 years.) All this makes it much cleaner then most east coast states.

But, Dyzm, we do tend to have our share of oil spills, and other fun ecological disasters. And you're fogetting the TONS of Biohazard and nuclear waste that is buried in Eastern Washington.

And, trust me, the East coast and midlands have MUCH better sport fishing. Much better.

Sure, we can catch in volume, but, how often do you hear people around ehre talkign abotu fly fishing? Not very often. Don't make us out to be wonderful, Dyzm, I actually prefer the kind of people I met in the East. People around here tend to be rather selfish, and tech-happy. Not to mention that Seattle has the nation's third worst traffic, and LA has the worst. I think second is NYC.

You dont want to drink while youre pregnant. Breast milk doesnt come in for a couple days after the baby is born.

I always heard have a small glass of wine in the evenings. It will help relax you and the baby.

Did you know, ye Amerikan many, that in many Great European Countries, the age of consent is birth? One must only be able to drink and one can.
