Jedi Master Carr

I know a lot of hard games to predict. My Chiefs are playing well winning 17-7 at halftime, their defense is playing better forcing three turnovers and the Special teams came up with a huge block punt. If they can win this game that will be huge for them especially if the defense keeps playing good.

TD Chargers!!!! (Sorry JMC. :)

No offense to Chiefs fans, but that has to be one of the worst defenses in the entire league. How do you lose a game with 5 turnovers?! KC has to get some stability on the defensive side of the ball or they'll be the most entertaining team to not make the playoffs.

I should have the early game results up in a few minutes.

Jedi Master Carr
Oct 13th, 2002, 05:37:41 PM
I know they have the offense. Actually there defense played good in the first half, it fell apart in the second quarter. A lot of it is injuries to the secondary, IMO. Jerome Woods probably one of the best Safeties in the NFL broke his leg in a preseason game and that I think has hurt that defense greatly. They are also starting a very young CB on one side which doesn't help and Eric Warfield is average at best on the otherside. They actually have a good defensive line with Sims healthy and in good gameshape (he is not there yet) there LB's are okay (Patton being the best of the lot). But really the secondary is the problem and that is not easy to fix, mid-season, IMO. Right now I say if they keep this up they will go either 8-8, 9-7 or maybe 10-6 (if there very lucky) still with only 2 wild cards 10-6 wouldn't get them in the playoffs anyway, they would need to go 11-5 and I am not sure if they can do that with that defense. Maybe next season they can pick up a CB through the draft or FA's and get Woods healthy and they would have a good defnese to go with a great offense. Also I have to agree with Len Dawson (I listened to the game over the Internet on the Radio) that if you are not a Chiefs fan they are the most exciting team to watch. I have to add as a Chief fan they give us heart attacks in the 4th quarter every game this season, except against Miami.

I loved Len Dawson when he was on Inside the NFL. (BTW, HBO really gave him a raw deal IMO.) I have to agree with you, they're an exciting team. I was telling my wife, if the Chargers score and leave more than 30 seconds on the clock they'll lose.

How about the Rams? They're still not anywhere near the team they were last year. The Raiders totally underestimated them. Going for it on 4th and short instead of settling for a short FG turned out to be a serious mistake and set the tone for the day.

Quick observations:
Tampa looked good.
Baltimore played better than expected without Lewis.
NO is a better team than I thought, but their defense is weak.
KC is going to pile up points all year long.
Green Bay is going to be a much better team than I expected. I never thought Favre could get in sync with all those new receivers so quickly.
Maybe my early impressions about NE were right? They certainly don't look like they'll be challenging the Dolphins anytime soon.

Tonight's game is more important for Denver than the Dolphins. The fins have a much better shot at their division than the Broncos. Even with a loss Miami could still easily win their division. But if the Broncos lose they may find themselves scrambling for a Wild Card against someone in their own division or even the Dolphins themselves. The first Wild Card tie breaker is head to head records which would mean they'd have to beat a team like Miami or Baltimore by a whole game. This should be a good game tonight.

Inside the NFL ugg I was pissed when I heard they got rid of Dawson and Nick B they are 100% times better than idiot Costas, who knows hardly anything about football (he is a baseball man). I like listening to Dawson he does great analsis on the Chiefs games, I can even here the frustration on him about the defense. Well at least I know the Chiefs will be in every game this year. They actually remind me of the 2000 Rams who barely made the playoffs with the best offense and the worst defense. If the defense finishes last I think they will fire that Def. cordinator (I am hoping they bring back our ex Defensive cordinator (I can't think of his name off hand he was head coach for two season but he really never belonged in that position). Actually the Chiefs could make the playoffs because the play crummy teams for the most part after their bye, (except for the last 3 weeks) but they would have to win one of the next two games to have a chance at that, IMO. On the Rams, actually they didn't surprised me I picked them afterall :p Still I don't see them winning more than 6 games. Also I still think New Orleans is the best team in the NFC I could see them going to the SB.

Jedieb
Oct 13th, 2002, 06:45:16 PM
I've checked in on some Saint games and I'm just not that impressed. I'd rank them behind at least 4 other NFC teams; GB, Bucs, SF, and even the Eagles. I know they beat both GB and Tampa, but that defense hasn't held a team to under 20 pts all season long. That's going to catch up with them. I think they're going up against SF next weekend. That game should tell us a lot about those 2 teams.

What a game!! I thought the Dolphins had it wrapped up with that defensive score. But they started playing soft on defense and let Denver back in the game. Now Elam just hit a monster 55 yard FG. Miami has 2 timeout and 50 seconds.

Jedieb
Oct 13th, 2002, 09:53:08 PM
This is just going to be a brutal loss for the Dolphins if they don't come back. They had this game. They should have declined the penalty on Denver's TD drive and forced a 4th and short. Denver probably would have punted with all the time left on the clock. Now it's 3rd down and 29 seconds...

Damn... I haven't seen a game like that in years...

Jedieb
Oct 13th, 2002, 10:06:01 PM
That was one of the best games of the season. I think both teams walk away from this feeling like they may see the other in the postseason. I said it earlier, this makes Denver's playoff run a bit tougher, but I think they showed they're a solid team than can easily get a Wild Card if not the division. Great game on both sides. Denver may have slowed Williams down, but they couldn't stop him when it counted; inside the red zone. In the past the Dolphins would have settled for FG's, now with Williams they get 2 TD runs. Barring a colapse, both these teams are going to have good runs, but I'm putting my money on the fish.

Figrin D'an
Oct 13th, 2002, 10:43:05 PM
Denver has a much tougher road to the playoffs... the AFC West is loaded, and with that loss, they're already a game behind San Diego and Oakland. Not insurmountable, of course, but it's going to be tough. At least one Wild Card will come out of the AFC West, but it's going to be hotly contested...

Miami has the inside track on the AFC East... they do have some tough games left, but if New England can't find a way to stop the run, and if Buffalo can't find a defense, Miami is almost a lock to win the East... it's only Week 6, and a lot of things can happen, but based upon what we have seen thusfar, it's hard to bet against the Dolphins to win their division...

The Colts have quietly made their way to a 5-1 record... they needed a long field goal to beat the Ravens today, but still... they're a contender, as long as Manning and James are healthy. Dungy may not have the athletes on defense that he had in Tampa, but his scheme is making a difference already.

Green Bay took it to New England today. The injuries in the Packers secondary forced them to play more cohesively as a unit, and use a lot more zone converages. It confused the Patriot offense. Brady was out of sync all game. And, once again, New England couldn't stop the run. Ahman Green had a very good game, and Favre passed another milestone (300 career TD passes). Perhaps even more amazing is that he's on pace to set career bests for completion percentage, yards per pass, and touchdown/interception ratio. If it wasn't evident before, it should be now that he is among the greatest QBs ever. The guy could retire tomorrow and he'd be a first ballot entrant into Canton.

I was sooooo tempted to pick the Rams this week. I guess I should have. They finally realized that they have the best complete offensive weapon in the league, and they actually used him (ie. Marshall Faulk). So, now the Bengals are the only winless team in the league.

JonathanLB
Oct 14th, 2002, 01:02:30 AM
Sort of a rough week for most people I see. I had a few upsets I picked that I should not have (ahem, Lions, but it was close).

Actually I really should have gotten two more right. You can't fault me for picks like Carolina and the Lions, when in both cases the opposing team scored 14 points in the 4th quarter for come-from-behind victories...

Oh well, c'est la vie. Carolina is a good football team that is really blowing it, though. Every game, they are losing by just 3 points or less. Idiotic.

Costas is one of the greatest sports announcers in history, I cannot believe anyone would insult him. He certainly did nothing wrong in his questioning of Faulk, but Faulk never should have agreed to the interview.

jjwr
Oct 14th, 2002, 07:22:41 AM
At least I was right on my call of the Rams, I knew they would take it to the Raiders but I still didn't pick them, oh well :)

Not sure whats wrong with the Pats, flat in the past 3 games. The defense hasn't been playing that badly but the offense has been turning the ball over so much it makes it awefully hard on the Defense to hold onto a game. Another 4 turnovers by the offense, 3 by Brady. They need to stop throwing 70% of the time and run the ball consistently so Brady won't force as many throws. Thats when they've been most effective and they're just no there right now

If the offense gets rolling agian you'll definetly see the Defense pick it up again, but 39 points in 3 games isn't going to cut it. At least they've got the bye week now to figure out whats going wrong.

Its kinda like the Faulk situation, now I'm not saying the Pats RB Smith is anywhere near as good as Faulk but he's serviceable but the coach still ignores him and is having Brady throw a ton of times and its catching up to them. Run the football and then look to the air.

I saw the Cowboys comeback. Carter had his moments, but he still made it more difficult than it had to be. I'm telling you, a few moments of brilliance can't make up for 56 minutes of incompetence very often. Carter is NEVER going to be the kind of QB that can lead the Cowboys to the Superbowl. He can't read defenses and he's as inaccurate a QB as you'll find in the league. When I think that the Cowboys could have gone after Bledsoe I get sick to my stomach. :x

Sene Unty
Oct 14th, 2002, 02:57:16 PM
Escpecially after you see what Bledsoe is doing in Buffalo. He is carrying that team. How many more last second wins do you think they can pull off.......I just hope they wont Sunday. Im going to the game.....It'll be fun! But Fiedler is hurt and I dont know if he'll play Sunday....that sucks.....

Figrin D'an
Oct 14th, 2002, 03:29:14 PM
Fielder is out for at least a month. Likely longer because surgery was required on the broken thumb. Norv Turner will have to adjust the offense to play to Ray Lucas' strengths now... better scrambler, but not quite as accurate.

I'd be more concerned about Chris Chambers if I was a Dolphins fan. Miami is not very deep at wide receiver, and if he misses any time, that puts even more pressure on guys like Ward and McMichael to make plays.

On another note... Bob Costas is a horrible announcer. He's a smart guy, and he knows baseball history better than most anyone else, but he can't call a game. I'm grateful that NBC didn't have any of the playoff series this year. He tries call every single pitch, groundball, pop fly and out as if it is the most important moment in sports history. He forces every call he makes.

"So, now we have two out in the bottom of the sixth, here in Atlanta, in Game 2 of the National League Divisional Series, with Chipper Jones coming to the plate, who is 2-3 tonight with a single and a home run, and has always hit well on the second Tuesday of every month in odd numbered years with more than one out and runners on the corners."

Just call the damn game, Bob. Play-by-play. Don't imbelish unnecessarily, don't constantly try to impress everyone with your knowledge of the game... let the color commentator(s) do his(their) job, and stick to the basics. Simplicity. There is a reason why guys like Ernie Harwell, Jack Buck and Harry Carey are known as being amongst the best announcers ever.

Did anyone here when and how he hurt his thumb? How much of the game did he play with a broken thumb? That makes his performance last night even more impressive. I think the Dolphins are in good shape with Lucas. He can make plays and he got a lot of work early in the preseason because of Fieldler's hip surgury so he should be ready to step in. I think the Dolphins can go a month with Lucas at QB and play well. But they need Fiedler for the playoff stretch.

look at troy aikmens first 3 season? People are saying the same thing now about Carter they were saying about Aikmen when he started. I am starting to believe in Carter, and last week if he did not over throw the ball by 3in. we could have won. I believe as time goes on, Carter will be more consistence as a QB and the leader of the Cowboys.

Needless to say the tv channels were out on Sunday, so a few friends and I were standing around the computer at a coffee shop reading the updates. We were about ready to leave in the last 5 min's of the game, before the cowboys came back to win it. We were cheering, giving eachother high fives, and bought everyone a shot of espresso. One hell of a game.

Lastnights Game was to die for Denver vs. Miami..I think we saw a preview of the AFC championship game.

Jedieb
Oct 14th, 2002, 07:31:13 PM
Aikman and Carter don't have much else in common besides crappy first seasons. Aikman was a #1 draft pick that would have been drafted by a number of other teams if the Cowboys had passed on him. Carter is Jerry Jones special. No one is going to trip over themselves to grab him when he eventually loses his job. Plus, the Cowboys were much worse off when Aikman started his career. Johnson was in his first year of coaching and he spent much of that first season cleaning house. Even when Aikman was losing he was still known for his accuracy. Carter had less than 80 yards passing for those first 56 minutes. 80 yards! He's consistently inaccurate. You put a decent QB in that offense and the Cowboys have a shot at a Wild Card spot. Maybe I'm being too hard on him, but I've seen him play and I just don't see anything special besides a guy who can run and has a strong arm. It takes more than that to win.

NORTH (Don't see any Wild cards here, some team might sneak into the playoffs with only 9 wins.)
Baltimore 2 3
Pittsburgh 2 3
Cleveland 2 4
Cincinnati 0 6

SOUTH
Indianapolis 4 1
Jacksonville 3 2
Tennessee 2 4
Houston 1 4

WEST (The home of the Wild Card! Could we see both Wild Cards come from here? It'll be tough when you consider all these teams have to feast on each other twice.)
San Diego 5 1
Oakland 4 1
Denver 4 2
Kansas City 3 3

NFC
EAST (Is Philly purposely trying to bungle their way out of the playoffs?)
Philadelphia 3 2
NY Giants 3 3
Dallas 3 3
Washington 2 3

NORTH (GB should have easy pickings.)
Green Bay 5 1
Chicago 2 3
Detroit 1 4
Minnesota 1 4

SOUTH (The Bucs sure weren't expecting this tough a battle. They'll have to win at NE later this year to take control of the division.)
New Orleans 5 1
Tampa Bay 5 1
Carolina 3 3
Atlanta 2 3

WEST (Arizona is in second place?!)
San Francisco 3 1
Arizona 3 2
Seattle 1 3
St. Louis 1-5

Fiedler played the last four or five plays with the injury.....the pass that went through the Broncos defeners ands was a pass from a broken finger.

This sucks that he is out for a month......I'm going to the game on Sunday against Buffalo and they might (gasp dont say it Sean) LOSE!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOO! IT WONT HAPPEN!!!!!

I can't complain. Most of you guys did worse. 5th out of 12 isn't too bad I suppose.

I nearly was 10-4, so close, but those two teams blew it for me.

Next week hopefully the picks will be easier and I'll be able to get closer to .500.

I could be focusing too much on the positive with Carter. Any day that the cowboys win is a good day for me watching football, and I am more willing to look over the last 3 and 3/4 quarters. You are right it takes more than to run good and have a strong arm to win, and that Aikmen is known for his constancies and accuracies throwing the football. Carter has not played a full season yet, do to injuries, and I am willing to wait. By no means I want to compare Aikmen to Carter other than the first 3 seasons, hands down Aikman is one of the best ever QB to play the game, if not in the top 2;). I think in a season or two Carter can pull it out, and start playing in the playoffs wildcard and beyond!!. If not, get him out of there...lol!

Still a close race. It'll be a long while yet before anyone can start laying claim to the win.
