For gods sake, avoid this book at all costs. It's beyond crap. I refuse to say more, except that somehow, I managed to force myself to read it.

And I really do mean force. This is not even well written. Avoid.

For the time that it was written, it wasn't a bad book. I enjoyed it as a kid, but it was for a different time and a different SW universe. Not only was the EU material that we take for granted not in place, but ESB and ROTJ didn't exist. Throw in the lack of Han and Chewie, no idea of exactly Luke was going to be capable of doing with the Force, and you get a very different kind of SW novel than we've become use to. Not the best, but not the worst SW book I've ever read.

There are far worse EU books than "Splinter" and "Truce", IMO.

"Splinter," taken in context like Jedieb said, isn't too bad... not great, but not horrible. "Truce" had some problems, but I can think of far worse. Namely, anything written by Barbara Hambley. :x

"Splinter" and "Truce" are the 2 worst EU novels I've ever read hands down. I've probably read 30% of EU, and this stuff was just painfully boring (Truce) or lame (Splinter). But I agree with you guys that considering it came out before Empire, Foster probably wanted to create his own ultimate ending with Luke & Leia facing off against Vader.

Dont think FOster had much say in the plot

It was interesting that they used some elements of the Kaiber Crystal that Lucas had once considered using. I'm glad Lucas never took the story in that direction. I don't like the idea of one's ability to use the Force to be efffected by a stone or some other object. Although the EU has broached the topic of how objects can effect the Force, the films have stayed away from it and I'm glad they have.

I'm eternally grateful one's force powers not being dependant on a rock.

Worst SW book, hands down, is "Crystal Star" by Vonda McIntyre.

Splinter . . . I can take it or leave it. I didn't like the Kaibur Crystal at all...

Some of the early stuff is pretty good. I liked the Han Solo and Lando novels. Galandro was an AWESOME character. I like him better than most of the current EU characters.

I dont get why those stories were all so bad.....everything frm the premise to the execution sucked......they really need some sort of quality control over there or something.

One of life's great mysteries. How some of these Eu novels saw the light of day....

Leia is extremely hot in the comic :) I hated the book though.

Compare to Crystal Star Splinter of the mind's eyes reads like a classic book.. I truly hate Crystal Star it is one of the worst books written.

Crystal Star royally sucked. It just...didn't make any sense to me, I guess.

If you think pre-ESB PUBLISHED EU novels sucked, imagine this: I laid hands on a collection of fan fics from the late 70s...the imaginations of the fans back then were SO bizarre compared to what the movies ended up doing.

Oh and yes, I'd love to do the same thing and get some fan fictions from HERE unofficially published.. :D

I guess the fan fic writers were still all about dropping acid back then! :lol

:lol I only managed to read one of the stories..it was hilarious...all the Jedi lived in a commune and Darth Vader's name was really DARTH...and he shacked up with Beru's sister...yada yada...

Not to mention that it was explicit enough to make me skip over a chunk of writing.. :o Maybe tonight I'll go and see about reading another one...

Explicit like a Tarantino film or explicit like a Penthouse Forum letter?

I am with you Hart.....sounds interesting...

Oh and I would love for our fan fiction to get published....how awesome that would be.....

I wonder if we could. Get a really big Rp going where we use characters from the EU and the movies in a big storyline....it would be fun....we couldn't use our characters, but I think it would be awesome!

I've liked everything I;ve ever read in the EU.
In fact, the only book I've ever liek out of all the countless books I've read was a load of crap by the name of Awake and Dreaming.
Planet of Twilight kept me glued, but that may be explained by the fact I was grounded when I read it. . .

Could you have maybe told me this about 10 years ago? Hmmm? |I

Lando Calrissian and the Mind Harp of Sharu is fascinating! ;) Actually its not a bad read. I reccommend it to all SW roleplayers who RP a gambler/scoundrel. :D

Oh Mark, have you ever tried "SpLinter of the Mind's Eye"? Great! That "Spinter" book was crap, you're right. ;)

Splinter of the Mind's Eye was absolutely horrible, too. They mischaracterized everyone. Luke, only a few steps away from still being a farmboy at that point, was talking about "unusual xenogeographic architecture", or some dren like that.

Lilaena De'Ville
Nov 15th, 2002, 01:33:12 AM
