I read Spinter of the Mind's Eye.

For gods sake, avoid this book at all costs. It's beyond crap. I refuse to say more, except that somehow, I managed to force myself to read it.

And I really do mean force. This is not even well written. Avoid.

For the time that it was written, it wasn't a bad book. I enjoyed it as a kid, but it was for a different time and a different SW universe. Not only was the EU material that we take for granted not in place, but ESB and ROTJ didn't exist. Throw in the lack of Han and Chewie, no idea of exactly Luke was going to be capable of doing with the Force, and you get a very different kind of SW novel than we've become use to. Not the best, but not the worst SW book I've ever read.

There are far worse EU books than "Splinter" and "Truce", IMO.

"Splinter," taken in context like Jedieb said, isn't too bad... not great, but not horrible. "Truce" had some problems, but I can think of far worse. Namely, anything written by Barbara Hambley. :x

"Splinter" and "Truce" are the 2 worst EU novels I've ever read hands down. I've probably read 30% of EU, and this stuff was just painfully boring (Truce) or lame (Splinter). But I agree with you guys that considering it came out before Empire, Foster probably wanted to create his own ultimate ending with Luke & Leia facing off against Vader.

It was interesting that they used some elements of the Kaiber Crystal that Lucas had once considered using. I'm glad Lucas never took the story in that direction. I don't like the idea of one's ability to use the Force to be efffected by a stone or some other object. Although the EU has broached the topic of how objects can effect the Force, the films have stayed away from it and I'm glad they have.

Splinter . . . I can take it or leave it. I didn't like the Kaibur Crystal at all...

Some of the early stuff is pretty good. I liked the Han Solo and Lando novels. Galandro was an AWESOME character. I like him better than most of the current EU characters.

Compare to Crystal Star Splinter of the mind's eyes reads like a classic book.. I truly hate Crystal Star it is one of the worst books written.

Crystal Star royally sucked. It just...didn't make any sense to me, I guess.

If you think pre-ESB PUBLISHED EU novels sucked, imagine this: I laid hands on a collection of fan fics from the late 70s...the imaginations of the fans back then were SO bizarre compared to what the movies ended up doing.

Oh and yes, I'd love to do the same thing and get some fan fictions from HERE unofficially published.. :D

In fact, the only book I've ever liek out of all the countless books I've read was a load of crap by the name of Awake and Dreaming.
Planet of Twilight kept me glued, but that may be explained by the fact I was grounded when I read it. . .

Lando Calrissian and the Mind Harp of Sharu is fascinating! ;) Actually its not a bad read. I reccommend it to all SW roleplayers who RP a gambler/scoundrel. :D

Splinter of the Mind's Eye was absolutely horrible, too. They mischaracterized everyone. Luke, only a few steps away from still being a farmboy at that point, was talking about "unusual xenogeographic architecture", or some dren like that.
