Usually the sent items folder is the culprit since by default all the messages you send have a copy of them stored in that folder in your private messaging area.

BTW: If you haven't cleaned them yourself in a week's time, I will use the feature available to me that will delete them all for you. >D :p

If there's some PMs you really want to hang on to, you can always use the "Download PMs" feature to save them to your HD. :)
