View Full Version : AP3 vs Signs

I guess we have a big battle for next weekend but I am certain that Signs will triumph, I think AP 3 will fall at least 45% maybe as high as 55% giving it between 35-45 for its second weekend, Signs should make at least 45 million could make as much as 80 I think (if it does make over 60 I think AP 3 will take an even bigger hit 55-60) It will be interesting, also I think in the end Signs will make more money at box office because even if makes 20 million less, it could play till August like The Sixth Sense and have low drops, I think it could be the #3 film of the summer, I think it looks that good. Anybody else excited about it as me.

Eh, I'm not really juiced about seeing it.
I think it will open in the 40M range and have good legs though. That would be my guess.
Jedi Master Carr
Jul 29th, 2002, 08:20:40 PM
I personally think it will open in the low 50's right now 50-55, I'd say that because so many people, I know what to see it and there has been a lot of adds for it so that number makes sense, I also think it will be a huge movie in the long run like The Sixth Sense, but that is a gut feeling that I just have. I have been looking foward to this movie all summer it has been my second most anticipated movie of this summer after AOTC.

Jul 29th, 2002, 08:23:30 PM
I know Carr, you've been on the "Signs" bandwagon the whole summer. :)
It will probably play through August and September because the crap of the year is about to be released. ;)
Lilaena De'Ville
Jul 29th, 2002, 08:24:37 PM
I'm too chicken to watch it alone. :) I'm guessing it will probably last like the 6th Sense as well, however. Although...next weekend..isn't that already August? So when you say "last til August" did you mean *next* August? Or perhaps September. :)
CMJ
Jul 29th, 2002, 08:28:23 PM
Didn't I say "play through"? By that I mean...play at a high level through the entire month.
As I'm sure you notice many films do not play at a high level longer than a week or two. :p

Jul 29th, 2002, 08:31:02 PM
LOL, yeah I have I guess when I first saw the trailer it really got me excited, I guess its because it really never shows you what is really happening, there is hints of Aliens, but is it?? and if so what do they look like etc. Its that mysterious stuff that I really like plus Gibson is one of my favorite actors and Shalmatan(sp) is a great director I loved both of his last two films (I think Unbreakable is very underrated) and he is a great director and could be even bigger in the future.
CMJ
Jul 29th, 2002, 08:33:59 PM
It has potential. I'll probably see it, but I'm in no real hurry.
I'm glad you are though Carr. It's always good to be excited about a movie.

Jul 29th, 2002, 08:41:43 PM
Yeah it does have potetial, I will post a spoiler-free review of it after I see it Friday. I have to see it on Friday I decided to wait on Sixth Sense and somebody told me the ending I was not happy:x But I will not do that I am sure it will have some twist at the end and there is no point spoiling it for somebody else.
CMJ
Jul 29th, 2002, 08:48:36 PM
Probably yes. M. Night Shyamalan's calling card seems to be the twist ending.
I have little doubt that this film will have a mind screwer too. :)

Whoops I am sorry I confused you LD, I have no clue what I meant, I think I meant it would play well all though August like CMJ said, I also thinks it looks like it will be a great movie, one of the best of the year.

Well, I love Gibson and Shyamalan, so I'll see it. I just hope it doesn't revolve too much around the whole crop circle thing. I mean, that scam was exposed years ago. It will be difficult to take a movie seriously if it's about that.

CMJ, I am very disappointed in you. Normally, you would be excited about any great movie on the horizon and here you are acting like it's a sequel to Spice World ;) lol, j/k
But seriously, I agree with Carr, this was one of my most anticipated films. Of course, far behind Minority Report still, though, which I was obviously looking forward to for years as it was a known project for like 4 to 5 years before Spielberg finally did it. Then Star Wars was about 100 times above MR, and Signs is very close to Men in Black II. Only there's a big difference: Signs isn't going to be a major disappointment like MIB2, lol. ;)
I still very much disagree with all of these high box office predictions, I mean come on, Carr, 80 million possible?! LOL, on what planet? Signs will make $35 million next weekend, that's about that. It'll have great staying power, though. It could even hit $40 million maybe, but $50M? I very much doubt it. That'd rock, though.
M. Night Shyamalan is a great director, I have really enjoyed his two films so far (4 stars to TSS and 3.5 to Unbreakable), so I cannot wait for Signs.
JMK
Jul 30th, 2002, 07:46:46 AM
I really think Signs will open with more than 35M, probably closer to 50M. People love Shyamalan's movies and it will certainly benefit from that interest.

Jul 30th, 2002, 12:03:25 PM
So Jon you think AP3 will remain #1 because it would under your prediction unless it fell 60% or something. I also said it could make 80 but it would need a couple of things to do that high screen counts and a huge anticipation, well there are a lot of people who want to see it, but I am not sure if it will get the screen counts though, I heard in the low 3000 range and it won't make 80 with that range. What I think it will do really is make between 45-60 that is more likely 60 being the highest it could do though I do think its more likely it will be in the low 50's.
CMJ
Jul 30th, 2002, 12:05:53 PM
I still say in the low 40M range.
That's what I'm sticking with. :p
Jedi Master Carr
Jul 30th, 2002, 12:37:09 PM
Then I guess you think AP 3 will take a huge hit, though I think it will take 45% maybe 50% myself. I still think it will make at least 45 in its opening weekend could be higher, it will be interesting to see.
CMJ
Jul 30th, 2002, 12:43:39 PM
AP3 is gonna fall like a rock.
At least that's what I'm expecting to happen. The chances are very high it will fall 50%(or more) this weekend.

I am really curious to see the reaction to Signs, people were surprised with how Unbreakable did, I think it is a very underated movie and I even like it better than the Sixth Sense, though that is just my opinion. But it only made 95+ at the box office, but the way Signs looks I think it will do a lot better.

I was disappointed with Unbreakable.... then again I was watching it with my sister and we tend to make idiot comments to each other that completely kill almost any mood any movie is trying to set. :)

It's just so tense and creepy... and then my mind flashes to two old farmer men in England tramping out in a field with 2x4's and string... and then Mel Gibson comes on with his "it's too perfect to be made by human hands" and then I lose it. It's like watching people get scared of rabbits or something...

I am sooooooooooooooo not seeing Signs alone. That thing looks like a "jump" movie. Hence why I'm gonna go see it with some friends... opening night... in the dark... late at night... um... this isn't helping me at all.
I can just see it now... by the end of the movie, I will have moved onto my friends lap, clinging for dear life to keep my losing my skin out of shear fright. Ok, so that's exagerated, but what story shouldn't be? :p :lol

I liked it. Then people told me it sucked, and I sort of didn't like it.
But I have decided for myself that I really doooo like it. The first time I saw it, in theatres, I swear I saw Batman sitting reading a newspaper in the train station, but now I just think I was on crack, because I can't find him again. :(

I prefer Unbreakable to Sixth Sense. I dunno, Unbreakable was suppsed to be a moive that was a comic book and it was sooo dead on it's amazing, right down to the ending. Plus, some amazing camera work.
The thing is Shamaylan is now associated with Sixth Sense, with was a stunning breakthrough movie and he will always have to live up to that rather incredible bit of moviemaking. He showed in Unbreakable it was no fluke too. Now he seems to have done it again, seems by the reviews this is going to be one hell of a scary movie, done with atmosphere and filmmaking, not cheap tricks and effects and gore. Cant wait to see it!!
Oh I might add Shamalyan has given me a taste for clever and thought provoking movies. His stuff is just pure filmaking art.

I thought Unbreakable was superior to the Sixth Sense.
And Mu...if you can take a pickup truck and a piece of string, and use it to magnetize kernels of wheat...I might be inclined to relax a little.
This is just a bit too much for lil ol me :cry

I liked both The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, but I think I like Unbreakable better... I think a good part of it is that Unbreakable didn't get as much hype as TSS. When TSS was out, it seemed like that was all I heard about... Granted, it was good, but I didn't think it was as good as so many people made it out to be...
I do want to see Signs, but I don't know if I'll catch it in the theaters... I might wait for the rental on that one.

A pickup truck? What on earth are you talking about, Charley? And unless you've been out there and used a magnet to pick up corn, I'd be hesitant to believe that paticular story.
I want to see Signs, but I don't have anyone to go with. :\

My previous statement about a 2x4 was referring to:
2x4 = a plank of wood 2 inches high by 4 inches wide by however long you need one.
not
2x4 = 2 wheel drive vehicle that can at the flick of a switch become a4 wheel drive vehicle. Usefull for climbing hills and such. :)
Charley... people make crop circles.
