View Full Version : The Big Scary News of the Day

Guess what?

Our outlet mall had a managers meeting today.

The subject?

Evacuation procedures, should Mount Hood happen to erupt. Apparently the city of Troutdale is concerned enough about this to actually be making serious contingency plans.

Should the volcano in my backyard erupt, and the dam breaks...there will be a fifty foot tall wall of water heading downstream to my little bitty store that I work at.

Once this happens...we have 40 minutes to get to higher ground.

If we don't get the call exactly as it happens...we have LESS time. Of course, if we get the call 30 minutes after the fact, we've got TEN minutes to lock up the money and the store and tell all out customers to GIT up to the highschool. ('Don't GO HOME ma'am, GET UP THAT HILL!!!")

I know that if I only had ten minutes..and I had to open the safe...I would fumble my way into drowning. ^_^;

Anyway, just thought you should know that if I suddenly never post again, its because I was washed away with my store. :)

:uhoh

Somedays, living in a place where eathquakes and volcanos are virtually unknown is a blessing.

I live near a major military base and DC. So if I stop posting its cos DC was nuked...:cry That sucks LD. It shouldn't happen.

Lilaena De'Ville
Jul 25th, 2002, 10:50:16 PM
Yes, but it COULD.... Mt. Hood has been having quakes lately. :uhoh

:) I'm not too worried. I will NOT forget m rubber ducky.

OH, and my sister lives on low ground too...so she'd have to pack up all ten kids and get to the highschool too. Or else I'll worry.

If I had 40 minutes I'd get customers out of the store and send them to the highschool (don't go home YOU'LL DIE), and call my sister see if she needs help, and then pack up the store and leave.

Of course, if the outlet stores get wiped out, then I have no job... :(

Admiral Lebron
Jul 25th, 2002, 10:51:40 PM
It's America. Sue the outlet store company because they built their store near a volcano and you don't have a job because of that.

Marcus Telcontar
Jul 25th, 2002, 10:56:24 PM
Unfortunantly I could well imagine someone would try that

Admiral Lebron
Jul 25th, 2002, 10:57:19 PM
And even more unfortunetly, I can imagine someone winning something like that. :(

O_o

Uh...

*Hands her a life boat.*

*And then jumps in a plane, flies over to OR, stands in front of volcano, hands on hips, and stares at it... her glare makes the volcano freeze shut.*

There we go... nothing like an icey stare to put everything back to normal. My job here is complete!

*Puts on cape, opting for free travel, and flies back to CA.*

Up up and AWAY!!!

My 17 year old nephew is already saying he needs to learn how to surf. TOngue in cheek, of course... *glares at said nephew*

Marcus Telcontar
Jul 25th, 2002, 11:12:58 PM
Only problem would be that the wave would be travelling at considerable velocity. You'ld need a powrboat to gain enough speed for the drop in

i heard scientists also discovered very recently an astriod that has the most potential to hit the earth than any before it ....be it still a small chance

it would hit Febuary 1st, 2019

and ohhhh its about a mile and half wide :)

Almost as bad as Orting

Mt. Rainer as you all know, (or should know) is the largest or second largest volcano in the contenintal United States, the town of Orting has 15 minutes less time then you have.
14,000+ feet she is, and can have a lahar (mud flow) big enough to make it to the puget sound. Think Helens but 50X worse. Scientest say gravity might start a lahar, for the ice shelf is very, very weak.

Check out the picture,

Well, remember some of us dont live in the USA, so please dont be saying things like "Should Know". That's as unfair as saying you should know where The Three Sisters are. I dont even recall ever hearing where Mt Rainier is and I certainly did not know it was a volcano.

Lilaena De'Ville
Jul 26th, 2002, 12:15:15 AM
The Three Sisters are in Australia...?

EVERYONE should know things. :) He didn't say you HAD TO KNOW. :)

Calm down Mark. I am positive Dyzm wasn't trying to insult people who don't know geography and topography.... were you Dyzm?

Marcus Telcontar
Jul 26th, 2002, 12:22:55 AM
I am calm - just making a point. I'm interested to know more, but it is a touch annoying to presume others not of the USA have any idea where or what this Rainer is. Until now, I had no idea it was a volcano and I dont even know where it is - except apparently it's in the USA.

And the Three Sisters are a rock outcropping at Katoomba, in the Blue Mountain, west of Sydney. It is so named because the natives believed it was three sisters who were changed to stone in grief.

If D.C. is to be nuked, better that it's with a very powerful (15 megatons) warhead than with a smaller, tactical nuke (15 kilotons). The more powerful one will kill me and lebron immediately, even over here, 10 miles outside of D.C., while the smaller one will likely give us a good dose of radiation and have us suffering for a while before dying very painfully.

That's why I'm scared of terrorists. If they ever get a nuke, it'll be one that's not very powerful, probably 15 kilotons like Hiroshima. At least with the Russians, you'll never know what hit you :( . The power on my monitor would go out, I'd look to the left at my closet (and D.C., way beyond) and then be reduced to dusty remains.

Jul 26th, 2002, 12:58:44 AM
Hopefully if its a smaller one, the wind will blow to the west, towards West Virginia. Don't need them. . .

Jul 26th, 2002, 01:09:38 AM
Was that a console game or a arcade one? I think I remember the arade one, it was okay, it was the grid bike game. There was also a Commodore 64 one I vaguely remember or Atari. Not so good.

Admiral Lebron
Jul 26th, 2002, 01:11:33 AM
The arcade one is good. Played it at Disney Quest(huge arcade with all the old games). I think it was for Commodore 64 cos we'd have it if it were for atari.

Marcus Telcontar
Jul 26th, 2002, 01:16:28 AM
Yeah, probably was for C64. And that awful thing they used as a joystick.

Admiral Lebron

Have to agree with that. Atari's were waaaay ahead of their time and they are still used in editing units.

Mark, did you know that there is a trilogy of books called "The Three Sisters" trilogy? It is by Nora Roberts, an excellent novelist, IMHO. In this series, Three Sisters Islands is off the east coast of the USA and alot of things that happen on the island are related to these long ago three witches and their descendants. Definitely worth reading, and I find it interesting that it has similarities to the three sisters you mentioned. Perhaps Miss Roberts has visited Australia.
