View Full Version : Pick Ten Movies

I'm on a quest to become a well rounded Renaissance man of movies. There for I am watching movies with almost every free hour I have for the rest of the summer. IF you were going to suggest ten movies to a freind, not just your faves, but ones you think are important, what would they be, I need suggestions. I'm already going through the AFI List, I'm basically done with that, I just need more... Well like Johnny 5 said, I need more Input!

A very tough question.
What does one gauge his response on? Acting, plot points? Character development? Dialogue, pacing?
Harder to answer. Meditate on this, I will.

See Once Upon A Time in China I and II, you must. The greatest Hong Kong action movies ever made, they are.
You have seen so many movies, so I assume you've seen most of what I would suggest anyway. I assume you have seen Dark City, but if not, that's one you got to see too. Great film, especially if you remember it was made before The Matrix and yet has some of the same themes, hehe. :)
The Killer is also one of the best Hong Kong action movies ever made, so that is a must, I agree with Reaper. It's a fantastic film, not just an action movie with people being killed, but a really brilliant movie with a valuable plot and great character interaction.

I think L.A. Confidential and Swingers are required viewing.
I also put Ronin quite high on my list of must-see movies.

these are great movies. I love Dark City. Thanks for the input guys. See I've gained access to my work's VHS/DVD/Laserdisc archives, so I can borrow five movies at a time. I'm frothing at the mouth for ideas.

Ronin was good, not great. It has a GREAT car chase, and it's a good movie, but probably a bit overrated.
Dark City is not messed up, lol, it's really awesome. I remember seeing this review of it on this late night Portland Cable Access channel back when I was in the rental house and had cable there, hehe. These two guys were talking about how great it was, so I had to see it once it came out on DVD. I have that DVD now.

Shush you! :p
One of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing may or may not count as one of the ten. I remember watching it tons as a kid, and I loved it. If I could find it, I'd watch it again and again....but it may not be findable. I think its a British film.

To add to the western list here are some more suggested watchings:
Unforgiven - IMHO, the best western ever made. Incredible performances by Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Richard Harris, and Gene Hackman. Hackman in his best role to date as the cruel and brutal sheriff, Little Bill Daggett!
The Longriders - About the Jesse James/Younger gang. The Northfield Minnesota Raid is a climax that no one should miss. Starring brothers David, Keith, and Robert Carradine; Frank and Stacy Keach; and Randy and Dennis Quaid.
I also recommend a few Clint Eastwood westerns such as Fistful of Dollars; A Few Dollars More; The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly; High Plains Drifter, Two Mules for Sister Sarah.
Southern Comfort - US soldiers combat training in a Louisiana Swamp end up on the bad end of Cajun justice. Starring Keith Carradine and Powers Boothe. A notable independent film!
