Good week for AOTC, considering the theater loss. Not so good for MiB2

For the record MIB opened Wed.

Still it is less than what I thought and may not even beat Scooby Doo for the third best opening weekend of the summer. Still it made 90 million which isn't bad but I am thinking it might fall short of 200 million probably make 180-195. As far as AOTC that is a great number also it must have made what that guy though for Thursday because those numbers come pretty close, and because of that I wouldn't be shocked to see it in the top 10 for the 5 day weekend on Monday, I bet it will be 11th at least.

Another interesting note: Spider-Man is in 13th place with its total now estimated at exactly $400 million. :lol

It reached that milestone in 66 days, tying Titanic's record, and beating TPM by 1 day. It'll be interesting to see if that holds up when final numbers come in. Sony obviously wants the record. :evil

Where did you read that? Mojo doesn't say anything about Spideman, I hope it doesn't make it Sony has been keeping it theaters I think just to get the record. Speaking of Mojo here is what they say about AOTC

At No. 12, 'Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones' retreated a modest 32% to an estimated $2.5 million, despite 639 theaters abandoning it with 1,162 remaining -- a 35% hemorrhage. In 53 days, it has amassed $291.2 million, which should quell any doubts in its ability to top $300 million by the end of its run.
I think they are right it should be able to make 9 million, I still am hoping that it crawls past ROTJ and ID4 and pushing it to number 11. Also it pass TESB today then putting at 14th for the moment should pass The Sixth Sense by next weekend moving up to 13th place.

MIBII disappointing performance?????

Personally I thought it did rather well. 90 million in five days is excellent.

We aren't saying it bombed but if it doesn't make 200 million I have to say that is slightly disapointing and at the least it guarentees there won't be any more sequels.

If it hits $200M, even if it crawls, there will be a sequel. If it makes $180 million, well it just depends then... but it's still likely there would be.

I do not think it was a disappointing weekend at all. I think it was an excellent weekend for MIB2, but the staying power is unlikely to be that good, which is going to the downfall of that film.

I hope there is a sequel, though. Although I thought MIB2 was a disappointing effort, it was good still and I'd love to see a third movie, maybe one that could be better.

Actually, this franchise is following the Jurassic Park franchise in quality I think. The first movie was EXCELLENT, really a great film, and then the next one was just good entertainment, nothing more, and largely seen as a disappointment despite large grosses ($229M for Lost World). Then JP3 was actually received a lot better and people thought it was quite a sweet film for its action/horror combination. I gave it 3.5 stars, combared to 3 for Lost World, 4 for JP, so if MIB does something like that... it's not doomed.

It was in an update called fastest to $400 million. I see he now changed the total to $400,054,000. I thought Spidey was also included in the weekend estimates that were up also. Maybe he took that update down briefly because of the discrepancy in the total. Dunno. O_o

I think the opening for MiB2 is disappointing compared to the original, when you take into account higher ticket prices, fives years of audience anticipation, more screens and a short running time. It's amazing that AOTC managed to make $80 million opening weekend considering how much backlash there was.

That's cause the backlash was a small number of disgruntled fans, mostly - and the critics. :p

Exactly, to Darth23 you listen. Obviously backlash played no part -- the movie opened with far more money than TPM, even adjusted for inflation. The staying power was a different story, but if you want to blame THAT on TPM, you gotta be a RETARD. TPM has nothing to do with AOTC's performance. TPM was one of the biggest successes ever and if anything that would help a sequel, not hurt it, lol. Some people are just desperate to "prove" that TPM was a disappointment, but if I had tried to argue that in my book I would have come across looking like a fool. There is simply no evidence to support that at all. There are cold hard facts PROVING that TPM was a well-loved movie and a massive success, but trying to prove that most people didn't like TPM or found it disappointing is absolutely impossible because it's wrong. There are no facts you can use to back up the theory and any theory not supported by facts is just incorrect. Theories are meant to be based upon at least some factual support.

There will probably be some really stupid people saying, "The reason Episode III didn't do as well is because TPM wasn't much liked and that made people not see AOTC, so in turn they didn't want to see Episode III either!!!" LOL. Oh gawd...
