Cats and dogs...Which ones dumber you ask?

In Florida, we had aligators...

Dogs just stayed in one place and kept barking, and eventually got eaten since they never MOVED.

Cats meow once, and then get the hell out of there. Now, who's smarter, and has a higher survival rate? :)

As an owner of both:

dogs are stupider. More loyal, but far stupider.

As a former owner of both (I still have kitties... they outlived the dogs), dogs tend to have this "duuuuuuuuuh" look on their faces. I have yet to see any cat give a "duuuuuuuuuuh" look (actually, they give you this look like you're infereior to them or something :lol)

Until I see a cat respond to specific vocal commands, or do any kind of other act indicative of higher thinking...then I definitely gotta say dogs are smarter.

Just because they don't come to you when you call, doesn't imply that they've got a superior intellect. It just means they're aloof.

Lets see - at least one of my cats responds to its name, I have then trained to respond to a food call, they open doors and respond to the car noise. The way they can open almost any container and steal whats inside indicates they can reason pretty well

My cat comes when I call him, jumps up on my lap when I ask him,a nd will leave the room when I tell him. How's that for cats responding to vocal commands.

But I still love my dogs,a dn the do the same thigns when I tell them to.

Marcus...what you've described, a common squirrel can also do.

Marcus Telcontar
Jul 3rd, 2002, 02:41:50 AM
And?

A squirrel has a good deal of intelligence as well, with learning abilities. You asked for a example of a cat resonding to vocal commands and using reasoning. That's what you got. If I yell out yum yum yum!, all three bolt for the food bowls. But they distern between pitch and who says it. They only respond to my voice command for that. If I patted my leg, they go I want to pat them. They know when I switch off the computer it's time for them to go into the garage and they act accordingly.

A cat moreover knows exactly how to get what they want and they cn take revenge. Unl;ike dogs and squirrels, cats can train us as well

Alpha

Extremely well...

Mine will jump up if I ask 'em to, and will also get off the keyboard when I ask them. Food calls for mine aren't nesseccary though. :) The cats I have, as soon as they smell the food, or hear it being put in their bowls, they come in. :)

Mark~How does yours get revenge on you if you did something? Mine find a nice, full glass of water near me, and dump that one me (As in they knock it over towards me).

Sophia Harten

Nothing but doggy biscuits here. :rolleyes :lol

And my cats do respond to vocal commands and hand signals. Well, one of em mostly. The other just ignores you completely, and the third (the female) looks at you, hears you, knows what you want, but continues on her merry way. She gives me this look like "You're not worthy of my attention." It's kinda funny.

But my kitty is just a big happy butterball, always purring, and follwing me around the entire house. He loves to go into the bathroom with me when I shower. Actually, I opened the door to the shower for him one time to get him to stop meowing, and he began to walk in!!! I'm like "Cat! What are you doing?!" Obviously he didn't care there was running water there. He just wanted to be with me. Either that, or he's a perverse kitty! :lol

I have a cat that will come when you call him about half the time.
