Special Director's Cut with 30 more minutes of footage.

I liked the mini-series on Sci-fi. I liked it a lot. I liked it so much that I IMMEDIATELY bought the dvd when it came out, even though I had it on tape.

Shouldn't that be enough? If I had had any clue that a newer Special Edition would be released, I would have waited. But then, they rpobably decided on a newer version because enough people bought the LAST version.

Anyway I broke down and bought the new version at Wal-Mart tonight for 20 bucks. (19.99). But I'm not happy.

Never again will I buy A newer Ultra Special edition that I've already spent money on. And I'm also going to be much less likely to buy a new dvd when it first comes out.

grrrrrrr

That is why I usually wait on movies on DVD that I think might come out with newer versions down the road.

There's always ways to find out if another version is coming out down the road. There's no way studios are going to sink their own battleship by telling people that they're coming out with a better version, that would make poor business sense. Yes, it is a sneaky practice, but what do you expect from businesses today?

Honesty, integrity and a fair product for a fair price.

Yeah, I know, I might as well just check into a mental hospital now.

:p

I agree with you, I wish these studios would show a little integrity and not gouge people at every oppotununity, but that's not going to happen.

:lol :lol :lol
That's the funniest thing I've heard all day!

The last DVD's I've gotten have been The Usual Suspects and Sidewalks of New York. TUS is suppose to be a Special Edition, but for all I know there could be a better one out there. I'll just live in blissful ignorance and not worry about it. This whole special edition fiasco is just ridiculous. You might as well just rent new stuff and then wait for SE's.

TUS came out with another edition a couple months ago, I have the plain jane version that is probably 3 or 4 years old now. I don't really care unless they've changed the movie. I rarely watch extras that are included, and that's what makes a "special" edition anyway.

This new one has a gag reel, some deleted scenes, and 2 different commentaries. My wife just happened to get it for me as a Father's Day surprise. I think it's purchases like that that studios are counting on. She had no clue or interest in what version of the movie she was buying. All she knew was that I liked the movie and it was just recently released, so she bought it. Greedy, greedy, studios...

Yeah the studios are greedy, that is one thing good about Lucas if he was really greedy he could have really screwed the fans by releasing a plain jane version of the OT and then release a different one a few years from now, at least he isn't doing that.

SW is an issue far greater than every other series of movies. Regardless of what Lucas does, he'll be perceived by the half-wits as greedy.

I don't think that is Jackson's doing it is most likely the guys up front in New Line.

Its the fact that they came right out and said that they are making a second version that makes all the difference. With a movie like LOTR, how many typical movie fans would sit through the 4 hour special edition? Almost none I'd say. Yet, big fans of the series, almost demand something other than what they've already seen. They demand a longer movie, so I think in this case, New Line went about this the right way. They're giving everyone the option to be happy, and they're giving plenty of notice.

True though it stinks that you have to wait 3 months to get the other version. Back to the other issue occasionally they do wait and only release one version like with Back to the Future coming out in December there hasn't been one on DVD yet and this will be the only one I think. I can't wait for that to get released that is one of my favorite films of all time.

I too suffer from this, but all dvd owners do. There are certain studios that I can't stand who do it consitently, like MGM. I can easily name three films they've done like this, Princess Bride, Platoon, and Usual Suspects. That's why I reaserch a movie to death before buying it. Digitalbits.com is a good source for this info.

For instence, I've avoided buying Bottle Rocket because there is a chance that Criterion will be releasing a better version.

Also I own Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. Now in August SE editions are coming out, and I'm getting them both with no qualms becaue I knew they were in production when I bought the standard editions, I just couldn't wait to own them, I had to have them, and I'm glad I do, esspecially Res Dogs sincec that disc is being released in multiple covers, with your fave characters for cover art, so I'll be getting the Mr. Pink dvd, Steve Buscemi is my fave actor, and I'll still have the original cover art version, which is cool to me.

But again, research a movie before buying it, unless its an impule buy. I do those all the time and my fealing is if I get burned, oh well, I had to buy it, my fault.

Also, as a filmmaker rising the ranks, I'm gonna bank on you guys paying my contract, so BUY ALL TEN VERSIONS OF MY FILMS. Just kidding.

How many of you will be buying the E.T. The Extra Terrestrial Collector's Set instead of the Special Edition? I know I will. Its the only way to get the original cut of the movie. You get the Orginal Cut, The new 20th Aniv Cut, a Special Features Disc, The Soundtrack, The Script, and I think something else. It's gonna be $60, and only on sale for 10 weeks. Then again, the SE will only be on sale for ten weeks as well, or only produced for 10 weeks.

I'm avoiding ET like the plague.

$60 is kind of steep. I like ET, but not enough to plunk down $60. I'll probably get the SE. I really want to see that Harrison Ford scene.

I would like to get "E.T.", but that is(60 bucks I mean) rather steep for me to swing. :( At least right now.

The next few months are killer for DVDs, well killer to the pocket book. All sorts of great things hit DVD.

DVDs have become such a drain on my bank account. I've started waiting a few weeks until I can find them second hand at video stores for way less than brand new. I haven't had a bad disk yet, so I'll just keep doing it.
