View Full Version : Can someone help me set up my FTP server?

It works fine if my cable modem is connected straight to my NIC, but when I try it through Cable Modem>Router (I have 3 computers connecting through this router, so I need it up), everything becomes fuzzled. I've assigned 192.168.0.1 to map as an FTP service, port 21, just like the D-Link webpage recommended.

When I go to the router's configuration page, it tells me the external IP address that it's using. I've tried using that as the domain IP address in Serv-U, and I've tried plugging that IP address into passive mode, I get this error when I try to connect to my FTP server:

Resolving host name xx.xx.xx.xxx...
Connecting to (xx.xx.xx.xxx).
A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.

DI-704 (My D-Link router)
Serv-U 4.0.0.4 (My FTP software)

I'd appreciate any help I could get. Man, if I had just dished out the extra 20 clams for the Linksys router....

I called up D-Link tech support, they said that they're not responsible for this function of the router. Also, I reassigned the port 21 to 192.168.0.102 (which is actually my local IP address-I thought it was 0.1), still no luck.

Server is now working. For all those that know the address, leech away until 9am EST when I wake up.

the trick is to realize the following:

WinXP Pro sucks (FTP serving wise)

Win2000 works

D-Link tech support sucks

You can't try to log into your FTP server from an FTP browser because something something regarding your WAN (or so says foodman), seems to check out with my experiences.

And a-yada yada yada. Just tell me when you need an account with the Golden Cuspidor, as I've dubbed it (cuspidor meaning spittoon in portugese :D), and you shall receive a user name.

WOOH, it's up!

You should get set up with DNS2GO so that you won't have to change your IP in your FTP each time, Makes things a lot easier

I think my IP is more or less static. I'm on cable. Plus, Serv-U is set up to simply use whatever IP address is available (the only way it WILL work for me).

When I had my DSL i'd just give out the internal ip to people with the same service, but to outsiders users i'd give the ip of renegadex96.myip.org so they wouldn't have to update their account info to login everytime of DNS me to get the IP

And DNS2GO will transfer such a domain name to your IP?

What it does is when your ip updates, it logs it with the DNS servers and it will redirect anyone that uses that name ip to the one that your system has sent to their servers. I hope that makes sense the way I word it...Msg me if ya want...AIM - Sith Renegade

FTP is not something I ever run on my own systems. The last time I was a heavy FTP'er was back in mainframe days.

What Master Vinny described is a basic IP spoof actually.

Thats because they do highway robbery for bandwidth down under.

????

That's not the reason. The main reason is that I just plain dont like FTP. And I sure will not allow an FTP on one of my networks as FTP is waaaay too easy to exploit.

That's why i'm not allowing anonymous users, and not really giving out the address. You have to be a friend to be given a user and pass.

I do the same, only friends have access to mine. Then again mine isn't even up, since I'm no longer in a cable or ADSL area anymore. Curse the evil known as dial up
