View Full Version : Image Leeching?

How come, whenever I try to download a picture that someone has attached to their post, I get this message that says "Image Leeching = You Lose"? I've tried it in both IE 6 and Netscape 6, and I keep getting that message. I'm especially confused, since other people will post in the thread making it obvious they've been able to look at the attachment. Am I just a weirdo, or is there an explanation for this? Is there something different I need to be trying?

That is very unusual. Do you access the Internet through a proxy server?

That image that you see is there to prevent people from posting image attachments and then hotlinking the picture attached here at another web site. As long as the view URL reads www.swforums.net something at the beginning it should work. O_o

I have a DSL connection, so I do believe I go through a proxy server. I'll check it out, thanks. :)

Best of luck and let me know of any progress. I use DSL as well, but no proxy server. If I come up with any ideas for solutions or reason, I'll post them here. :)

Hm...well, Darth Viscera has posted an attachment in his September 11th thread in the OOC forum, and it's URL is this....

http://www.swforums.net/forum/attachment.php?s=&postid=293520

It does start with www.swforums.net, which sounds like it should be okay, but when I try to view it, I get this...

Weird, huh? I haven't been able to check on the proxy server thing, though...was too busy going to see AOTC again. :)

Thanks for any advice you can give, though, I really do appreciate it. :)

I'm curious... Can you see this as the actual image?

Nope, I just see the Image Leeching thing again.

I'm cursed, I tell you, cursed! :\

I'll be upgrading our version of vBulletin in the next day or two. Perhaps it will fix this issue. I know it addresses some issues with attachments and avatars, so the chance is there.

Awesome, I'll let you know if anything changes once the upgrade happens.

Thank you!!! :)

The upgrade has been done. Do a hard refresh (CTRL - SHIFT - Click Refresh) and see if there is any difference.

I have changed how attached images are displayed in threads. Head back over to the Sept 11th topic and let me know if you can see the image in the first post now or if you still get the Leeching one.

:x Too strange. I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem either, so that makes me think it has something to do with your connection/browser/something on your end. :huh

Truly bizarre, yes. But par for the course--seems like I'm always the one having bizarre things happen to me, and they happen to no one else. :lol

Well, if anything changes or if I have some sudden revelation, I'll let you know! Thanks again! :)

AHA!!!! Mystery solved!!! It was my firewall. I use Norton Internet Security. I turned it off, and voila! The images show up. :angel

Shoot, that's probably what's wrong with mine as well... I also get the image leeching stuff and use Norton Personal Firewall.

Weird thing is, I've had this firewall installed ever since Mid-November/Decemberish when I got XP and when my brother installed the actual firewall. And everything had been fine until Mayish. And I'm not a fan of turning my firewall off...

I turn the firewall off just long enough to get the attached image to show up, and then I turn it right back on. Seems to work just fine that way. :)

I'm gonna have to do that for now, but since it worked in the past before (having it on yet still being able to see all the images and junk), there has to be a setting or option that I am not seeing.

*does detective work*

That's because we haven't always had the anti-leeching stuff in effect. :) I'm sorry if it interferes with your normal browsing, but it's really beneficial.

Ahhhh! So that's the problem with another forum I go to! I get Offiste downloading not allowed and I have XP's firewall turned on - only happens on this machine.

Never thought that could cause the problem :)
