Mainly because the current dreadnaught is nothing compared to a modern warship, this increase in hull armor, weapons, and systems gives it the ability to play with modern warships. Furthermore, the interdiction capability allows it to have a stand alone role, it can be used in single groups or wolf packs. This also is great for raiding supply lines and commercial vessels that supply an empire with its resources.

Desaria, the Interdiction Pickets were designed by Viscera. They are only about 50 meters long, so I know he wasn't go for "more compact".
