View Full Version : Poll - how did you learn about GJO?

Master Yoghurt
Apr 17th, 2002, 03:18:25 AM
Like the thread topic says, how did you find us? Search engine, word of mouth, links from other board/website or otherwise?

This poll is particulary aimed at our newer members (6 month membership or less), but everyone is encouraged to reply, as it should be an interesting read anyway. :)

My journey started back in june 99, when I noticed a message board at the SW versus Titanic site. Actually it started earlier, as I used to track the counting down website for TPM, but that was my first forum encounter. This board was what we know today as the of swfans.net. There was forum named Jedi verus Sith Battlegrounds, and I registered the name "Master Yoghurt" because Yoda was taken, and because I thought it was a fun spin on my favorite SW character (I also really like Spaceballs the movie AND yoghurt, cherry flavored or not :)). Because of forum brawls, me and a group of other posters moved to <a href=http://www.coruscantcity.net/cgi-bin/ccnet/board/Ultimate.cgi>coruscantcity.net (http://pub2.ezboard.com/bswvstitanic>ezboard) in juli, and a new battleground forum was created. Some of the members at swfans decided to stay though, reestablishing a new Jedi group. In october 99, the Jedi at swfans and CC.net united, to form the Jedi Alliance. Our board of operations was <a href=http://pub1.ezboard.com/bthejedilounge.html>The Jedi Lounge</a>. In november 99, the two groups fully merged forming the Greater Jedi Order. In march 2001, there was an argument between the ezop and the other administrators, and we moved here.

Ok, very long story made short, but you get the idea! So what is your story? :)

Started out in TSC, being recruited by Scorpion, then went to TSE where I found the link here, and went to it. Actually it was the first version of the board (this is the second). I was also at CC.net for a short time too. Before I forgot about the place. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/image/emoticons_classic/smile.gif ALT=":)">

I was actually searcing for a SW RP book, for a group of my friends and I who wanted to start RPing together. I went to this site all about RPing and learned a ton. I then thought, "Wouldn't it be more fun, and easier if we just RPd online?" So I searched for SW online RPing games. I actually typed in a bunch of words something like, "Become a padawan" and stuff like that after I found out that my original search wouldn't work. <img src=http://www.thegjo.com/forum/smileys/biglaugh.gif ALT=":D"> I then stumbled across the old GJO board and was thinking that it was no longer in existance, and I was bummed. Then I searched again for the GJO and found a different site, or so I thought, and it was this one! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/image/emoticons_classic/smile.gif ALT=":)"> I was so happy I was like, "Yeah!! I found it!" I registered right away and began my story. So it was more by trial and error that I finally found this place! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/image/emoticons_classic/smile.gif ALT=":)">

A link in TSO, never went to other boards during TSC, except SWfans and CoruscantCity. Then after TSC Collapsed, I went exploring.

I found the original jawafortress.net from TF.n in March 1999. And basically, I've followed the path of Yog, except I joined the jedi one day after the group came into existance at swvstitanic forums. I'm one of the original members of the community and a foundation member of GJO <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/image/emoticons_classic/smile.gif ALT=":)">

I was searching for star wars sites at school and found this one place, forceacademy.com, where they actually have people that think they are connected to the Force. I'm really not into that. I was talking to my friend about it and she told me about roleplaying. So I searched for RP boards and yea, I found this one.

well, a long time ago my friend's board was in this top 25 ezboard thing. I was checking out some of the other ones on there, and I found Alpha's Young One's Base. I clicked on it and from there I found a link to the old Bounty Hunter's Moon board. After a few days there, I found a link to SWFans, and then I got a link to the old GJO board from someone's sig.

Ok..again..old school.

First...LOL Dale!! Yep you and I go way back in that nasty big battle at SwFan. ;)

My story..tries to make it really short. I had a Jedi Board (now closed by me), I was attacked by TSC..ole Itala and gang...Gav, DarthCloak, Havok and Ogre popped up and attacked us!! So..I countered..I went to TSC to track ole Itala down..bumped into Yog there. But later had JB visit my board with DT ;) JB was my really first GJO acquaintaince. After I arrived at GJO, Two of my Jedi went to GJO...Kat and Danster. That's my history.. I was a knight, who became in charge of recruitement, now Master..

What a mouthful!! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/image/emoticons_classic/laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

As I'm sure many of you know (or can easily guess), I've always been a huge fan of the Legacy of Kain games. Shortly after the release of the Playstation game, Soul Reaver, I went to Eidosinteractive.com and registered at their messageboards so I could talk about the game. This, I'm fairly certain, was the first messageboard I ever registered at (early '99). When I registered (being the absolute n00b I was), I wanted a name that related directly to the games. But there were already 10,000 variations on names like "Kain" and "Malek", and I wanted something... distinguishing. A name that would be mine and mine alone. So, for whatever reasons, I picked the name "Nupraptor" (who was the first boss in Blood Omen - obscure enough for my tastes).

Without going into too many details (many of which I can't remember, anyway), the LoK forums were run by a very tyranical moderator named Jazz86. He'd arbritrarily delete posts made by people he didn't like. If someone questioned him as to why he did it, he'd ban them and delete thier thread. As you can imagine, we quickly grew tired of this. Looking for a way to set up our own board, the ever-lovable KnyteWulf (perhaps you know her by Taja Laraan?) heard about this new service, Ezboard. It was free, had no advertisements, and let you set up your own board. No limits. The first (and shortly-lived) community was called the "Castle Nemesis" (the EzOp was Nemesis himself). It was meant to be a safe haven for intelligent discussion of the games, and was strictly invite-only. I believe this was one of those "server1.ezboard.com" boards. "The Unknown Gamer", one of the posters from the Eidosboard, started an interesting fan-fic, chronicling our escape from the Tyrant of Eidos, and he dubbed it "The 13 Rebels" (or something like that - I honestly can't remember any longer). This was about the time I fell in love with messageboards: It was so easy to get caught up in the fantasy of actually retreating to the Castle Nemesis at the end of a long day and conversing with friends.

Shortly after the formation of the CN, another prominant poster by the name of CyborReaver created a sister board, The Nosgothic REALM. We all eventually convened to there, and the CN was closed. However, when the Unknown Gamer showed his face, he had this nifty new signature, proclaiming him to be a Sith Apprentice of the Sith Empire. "Sith?", thought I. "As in, Star Wars?"

My interest was piqued. I clicked the link in his sig and wound up at TSE. Strangely, I found my way to the GJO without really seeing much of TSE (Ironically, I had originally intended to be a Sith). There was a single thread in the academy where Jedi Boricua was asking if there were still any padawans looking for masters. Two people had already answered in the affirimative, so I timidly asked if he could possibly fit me into his schedule. He took me in immediately and the rest was, proverbially, history. I believe this was around the height of the infiltration problem, and I later learned that I was suspected of being a sock puppet for Darth Bane. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/image/emoticons_classic/smile.gif ALT=":)">

As an interesting footnote: I had absolutely zero knowledge of HTML up until this point. I knew how to change font colors, and that was about it. So, while looking in the B&G, I noticed Yog had a thread where he was making signatures for people. Rudimentary things, they were - black tables with a picture on the left and text on the right. In fact, this was precisely the type of signature that he had just finished making for a one Calhemia Cutta. So I, of course, shamelessly stole the code, replaced it with a picture of Garrett (from the Thief games, whom I thought looked appropriately Jedi-ish), modified it a bit, and made my own signature. If anyone could perchance dig this thread up from the dregs of the old (and several hacked) GJO, then that would probably serve as a good benchmark for when I started RPing.

After that, I thought it would be fun to have people whom I actually knew IRL join in on the fun, so I invited Morgan (then known as the infamous 'Foodman', which he temporarily changed to 'Fewdman' - hence the nickname of 'Fewdy'), Jeseth and Warren, in varying intervals. Thus, I'm either directly or indirectly responisble for every one of these crazy Miami people you see bouncing around the boards. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/image/emoticons_classic/smile.gif ALT=":)">

Ok, I'm done. <img src=http://www.thegjo.com/forum/smileys/magtongue.gif ALT=":p">

Well... my story is pretty close to Marcus's account.

I originally started posting at the Countingdown.com board for Episode I in the late autumn of 1998. For several months, that board remained my primary posting spot, although I did also post at TFN on occasion. Every once in a while, I would decide to follow new links to other Star Wars related sites listed on the Countingdown.com board. One of those links was to a site called jawafortress.net. I perused the site, and found my way to the message board, at the time an EzBoard site called the "Star Wars vs. Titanic" board. I lurked at this board for a while, and finally started posting in April '99, mainly because I felt the need to join in the fight against all of the trolls we had to deal with back then. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/image/emoticons_classic/smile.gif ALT=":)">

Then came the beginning of the very first Jedi Council. In a thread started by sirdizzy, the first Jedi emerged. I'm proud to say that I was one of them. Membership grew quickly, and a ruling council of 12 members was chosen. I was fortunate to be among them. The rest is, as they say, history. Yog's account of the major events that followed are quite accurate. I was among the people that left the board to form CoruscantCity.net. When the Jedi Councils from the two boards rejoined, I was again fortunate to be a member of the ruling body in the newly formed Greater Jedi Order. Since that time, although RL on many occasions limited my time, I have been a faithful member of the group.

An interesting note: I have held this same screen name since I first started posting at the Countingdown.com boards in 1998. It has stayed with me thoughout my time at all of the incarnations of SWFans.net, CoruscantCity.net and GJO. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/image/emoticons_classic/smile.gif ALT=":)">
Actually... my avatar has remained the same as well.

Ditto to Yog, Marcus, and Figrin. I came from TFN back before TPM came out, looking for stuff on the prequels. Followed a link to Jawafortress, then on to Swfans. Chatted up a storm with folks, and enjoyed myself greatly. Eventually became a mod, and got de-modded at swfans for taking the pain to some trolls. Caused a big uproar that split swfans into cc.net (yes I was partially to blame for it). At CCnet, we started RPing as jedi and sith, and I joined the Jedi council. Later, we merged back with swfans.net, and GJO was formed, and I was one of the founding dudes.

Everyone has these grand ways of getting here. Mine only because Dreyes pestered me for 2 weeks straight. (It was later said that Me, Dreyes, Tala, Lyle, and Archangle16{now Shade Magus} were all the same people, the truth is we were all suckered in to it by Dreyes sence we live in the same town.)

Okay let's see....you know what? I don't remember exactly how I got here. I came home from a cast party and was a little tipsy. Watched all the star wars movies. That I remember. And then I went online and did some surfing. And then I woke up at my computer desk and this was on the moniter. So yeah....it was purely accidental. But it's really fun so far.

Oh man. All I know is that about the time E1 came out, I found SWfans through Counting Down, after some splits and moves from other boards. And then from SWfans I, along with some others, went through yet another split that led to CCnet.

I hadn't really had any account at the time, being mostly a lurker, not until I reached CCnet. That's when I really started, first as Jedi, and then a month later as a Sith.

Eventually from there, I just moved along with the rest of the crowd I'd grown fond of, and landed at GJO. Of course, GJO was first somewhere else, and after a spit with the owner of the board, GJO moved here.

It's been a loooooooooong road. But, a fruitful and rewarding one. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/image/emoticons_classic/smile.gif ALT=":)">

Hm... About a year and a half ago.. I was (and still am) a regular on the Virtual Edition ezboard. It's basically a star wars fan site that is all about spoilers..

I remember a someone there (I can't remember who) talking about roleplaying at the GJO.. and I was interested.

I made my first global name "Keman" around the week of Feb. 14, 2000 and started posting at Nuri's board, which ultimately lead me to the Sith Empire, and from there I found the GJO!

I found GJO..eventually. <img src=http://www.thegjo.com/forum/smileys/biglaugh.gif ALT=":D">

I started with ezboard at a board called "The Crazy Ass Message Board," which was run by Fox609 and frequented by a few members of TSC. I had followed my younger brother there, and found that he RPed under the name of Banestone as a Sith of The Sith Council.

Itala was there too, and he actively recruited me..I'm talking, every day there was a comment about me joining the Sith! I refused every time, saying, "if anything, I'd be a Jedi! I'm not evil!"

Its so ironic if you think about it. I did eventually give in, and joined TSC, which soon splintered into TSO. I got to GJO from links from TSO's ezboard.
