Personal icons?

For those of you who can access these forums in the SWFans TSO, (All mods should be able I think) see this topic:

I have made personal account icons possible and was curious if you would like them enabled in posts here. They can be easily controlled by moderators via the same method as editing a Custom Title.

I'd very much like it for the rest of the board, I'll say that.

Although... I'm a bit wary about personal icons after figuring out how the jerk frelled the old GJO. But, then again, it would be simple to undo here, methinks.

The problem I see with implementing them board wide is the way it changes our image limitation policy on the regular SWFans forums. :\

How do you mean? Filesize? Most icons would be no more than 1 or 2k, I imagine.

The personal Icon I have at TSO right now is 10 KB, so it can easily become an issue of filesize.

I was thinking that maybe we could implement them on a Mod/Admin level, but that seems kind of selfish.

I don't really have a sig for this account, or at least the one I do have is only a few KB, but with no way to regulate icon size either in dimension or filesize, it could make for a tricky situation in regulating standards we might set on the regular forums.

But I did want to give the group boards the option because LV made mention of it and most of the group boards aren't so stringent about image filesize (mostly sigs) as SWFans is.

I'm against em... I always ignored them anyway, and its another filesize hole. I often feel bad for the people on dialup.

Actually, I do think they could be implemented providing we have some restrictions.

The way I set it up for a user's profile I asked that icons no larger than 35 X 35 pixels be used (in the field's description, which I think will show in the CP when I make the field editable).

35 pixels seem like a good limit, as anything larger than that would really get annoying. Morgan is right about loading times for 56K though, so we might also want to include a total filesize (avatar/sig/icon) guideline.

I hadn't really considered icons would have a large filesize. My own is about 1k.

Hmm... I'm going to see if we can't borrow some of the coding for avatars, in regards to restricting filiesize / dimensions.

That will be really difficult considering that avatars become part of the DB while the way I have icons set up is just a remote image link.

Yeah, I had considered that. But I think it checks the filesize when you're submitting it, so it might be possible.

I think the file check is a part of the upload to DB process.

It might could be done if we added a field to the user table and made icons part of the DB, but I dunno. I'm really not that good with PHP or MySQL, I just modify existing stuff well.

Fiddle with a style almost no one uses, like vB standard. Its what I do when experimenting. :)

I dont even use a personal icon, anywhere. I dont like them and IMO, I dont see the point. Dont impliment them

I did like my lightsaber icon but if this presents a problem with filesize and what not....skip them .
