Concerning the Long Countdown

Obviously, everyone knows that as we draw nearer to Attack of the Clones, certain threads like the Long Countdown will draw more attention. To address this, and to make sure that everyone gets a fair shot at posting in this long-standing thread, the staff here asks that we all make a conscious effort to let as many people have a chance at posting as possible. There have been a number of regular contributors to the thread, which is good. We want these people to continue to contribute. So over these next 23 days, we're asking that no one post more than twice in the thread. There are more than enough people to satisfy this need, so there's no need to have yourself all over it. Anyone seen as monopolizing the thread will without question have those posts deleted, and thus giving someone else a shot at the day. There won't be any "warnings" so to speak, so if your post is gone, it probably isn't a mistake. :)

Once AOTC arrives and the countdown ends I think that everyone should get to have a nice farewell post to the thread on the 17th or 18th and then JMK can have a sendoff post and we can then lock it down. I have a question:

Since the thread is so BIG in size and posts, and since I know rules are usually discussed and changed throughout an entire thread like that, fleshing it out, I'm at a lost. I can't just read the first page and know what to do, since the rules might have changed. The question is, what is the thread for? What is the poster supposed to do?

Jedieb I guess you can still post after the person has already posted the day, I don't see a problem with that and Sage, all you do is after midnight post how many days are left, we have been quoting the movies but that is up to you.

The Long Countdown isn't a "game" or a "contest" sirdizzy. The object isn't to be the one who posts first all the time. It's merely to count down the days until episode II and as such, it is only fair that everyone get a chance to post.

I like this idea. And I like the idea of letting JMK get the last post on the last day... I'd go further and say that on the last day, after JMK gets the last post, the thread should be closed to posting, and only available to read....

Dizzy, many asked you to share the thread, and I specifically told you that it wasn't a game and there was no trophy for the one who posts the most number of days. There are no points involved, and the thread thrived "in peace" for more than 2.5 years. You were asked politely to share it a little more often, and you were very defiant of that. The staff, or anyone else that asked you to cooperate have no reason to apologize.

Well, I just got in one of my 2 posts. It's not that often I'm up this late, but one of the little ones is sick and she's not letting anyone get any sleep. I might get another one in this weekend and let everyone else have the fun for those single digit days. As for who's to blame, let's see; Thread runs smoothly without any problems for 2.5 years. Then the last few weeks someone turns it into a competition and starts posting day after day before the regulars who kept it alive for over 2 years have a chance to post. Is there really any doubt about who was to blame?

Back when we were around the 200-300 day mark and there wasn't a lot of traffic in the countdown thread, there were plenty of days where I had posted 3 or 4 days in a row there and would then hold off to let someone else have a chance. The thread is not there so it can be dominated by someone - its there to enjoy the wait to Ep. II in a community environment amongst friends.

I don't care if I don't get to post a whole week's worth of posts there. I do care if I get completely shut out of the thread because someone is always fighting to get the post of the day.

Yes, in other words, turning it into something it isn't; a competition. Back in the days where we were 200-500 days away, it was not uncommon for someone to get several days in a row. I refer to these as the dark time of the countdown. It was necessary because it wasn't clear then that this thread was going to endure to this point. Now that it has, the need to hog the thread is gone.

We've have a slight problem just to let everybody know, JMK has had an accident of some sort something to do with a dog, all I know he can't post for a week or so, I guess he will post the details later. We have four posts left and to finish it we will have to break the rules a little, Sir Dizzy and Jedieb both have done it three times, I am hoping Buff will do it twice, and CMJ said he will do it again, so that hopefully will cover it along with my vote, if Buff is unable to do it though somebody might need to volutnteer who has only posted twice.

I know it sucks about, I don't know all the details really but the worse thing about he won't see AOTC on Thursday, I really feel sad for him. Me and CMJ are going to talk it over about the last post, I would be honored to do it, if comes to it, I think CMJ should get the next to last post, that really leaves the post tomorrow so we will have to figure out who is going to do it and stuff like that.

I too will go along with Doc... I got my final post in at the 8 day mark - being in the top 10 is enough for me. Besides, more than likely there will be a countdown to Ep. III, so there will be plenty of time to post more there.

If the thread cannot be closed by JMK, someone should do it in his place - and the order suggested by Doc sounds fine with me. I also agree that the thread should be kept open so JMK can do the honors of posting some final words before it is locked down.

Hey guys, thanks for the well wishes! I'm ok, I have AotC tickets for thursday at noon, and friday afternoon (I got the whole week off work!!). Thank God we have two eyes or I'd be screwed! Everything out of my right eye is totally blurry. But I should be able to post the last day tomorrow in the countdown. I still won't be around here so much as I want to rest the eye a couple more days, but I'll be back to post my thoughts on AotC on thursday night.
