Lets say that I am not surprised that it has started and this guy hasn't even seen the film

The first thing that tells me he is a moron and is whole crap of a theory that Leigh Brackett wrote the TESB. I have no clue what he is talking about it was thrown out, you think Kasdan would lie, and besides Kasdan is a great writer one of the best writers ever in hollywood and the movie does resemble some of his other work. Also I have no clue what is motivation here is I do know that Wells (the author's name) is mostly a Tabloid reporter (he used to appear on that Gossip show on E! for example) the man is a just a moron and I think he says what he thinks. I guess I should ignore the whole thing and I would if I didn't get mad about the whole Brackett thing which really got my attention.

The negative press had to start sooner or later... :\

The only thing that bothers me about the article, and that bothered me about most of the negative press that occured before TPM debuted, was the 'hearsay reviewing' that took place. So many of the people that blasted TPM, and now this writer with AOTC, did so without having ever seen the film before the official release date. So many claims made against the film were based on hearsay and second-hand information. The end result was that it became popular among the press to hammer TPM as a disappointing film.

It was really unfair to do so in '99, and it is unfair to make similar claims against AOTC now. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and if a writer wants to publish that opinion, that's fine. Just see the damn film first and base the opinion on a first-hand account... don't try to dissect the reviews of others or draw flimsy evidence from supposed "trends." If this Wells guy wants to rip AOTC once he has seen the film, fine. Go right ahead. But by doing so before he actually has seen the completed work, he's just another tabloid spammer...

Why? Because my experience at E2 will not be dampened by foolhearted pessimists like this soulless swine. TPM may not be ESB, but its still Star Wars, and thus a light-hearted and wonderful experience.

Come on...there isn't even a single SW film in my top 10 favorites, yet I'm able to see these movies for what they are.

Like I've always said, for these writers, any press is good press for them. By doing this, he's getting God knows how many more people to read his crap. That's what he wants, and its what his employer wants.

That is why I don't pay him much attention but I get mad at his claim that kind of make Kasadan seem like a liar for saying that he helped Lucas with the screenplay and that they threw out the other one (I believe he said this most recently in the TESB anniversary SW insider) Kasadan should speak up and say that he doesn't know what he is talking about.

His personal devolution from a lean and focused filmmaker in the early to mid '70s (THX 1138, American Graffiti, Star Wars) into a bloated poobah and kiddie-franchise emperor mirrors, I feel, the increasingly infantile tone and decreasing depth of the Star Wars films, which was initially signaled by the release of Return of the Jedi in 1983.

I agree and disagree with this. I can see where he's coming from with the "decreasing depth" part. But I think he's missing the fact that each of the movies have a certain tone. I find that "deep" movies tend to be dark, brooding and character-driven. ESB is obviously the deepest, by right of it's order in the saga. Its the darkest of times in the galaxy, and ESB reflects that. TPM's galaxy is the exact opposite. This guy is missing the point and sounds just like another one of the TPM bashers who are jaded and angry that the movie wasn't made for them.

This guy seems -- just from his writing of this article -- like one of those idiots who like to tell you how bad TPM or RotJ were, but never once give you any solid reason why it (they) was (were) bad.

I can respect a person who didn't like TPM or RotJ or any other film, as long as they can piece together a reasonable argument as to why -- or at least just write everything as a matter of personal opinion.

What I can't stand is when people voice these opinions as facts as if the way they felt is the way everyone felt (everyone who isn't a moron or an apologist, at least.) If they want to state their opinion as a fact, then they have to provide back-up as to what made TPM a bad film. And they have to provide evidence as well. Just to say, "Well, it had no plot" or "It had no characterization" is just a cop-out. Show me evidence in the movie that backs up the claims. On the same note, I woudln't hold those who liked the film to a different standard. Saying, "TPM Rocks" without reason, and stating it as a fact, and, with the attitude that anyone who disagrees with you is a moron or a "basher" is just as bad.

How he can sit there and trash a movie that he hasn't even seen is beyond me!

And what he uses as back-up is just so ... horrible it's beyond reason. Harry Knowles review, and Harry's assesment of Anakin (how he hates Anakin because of certain character traits) and twisting it to make it seem like Harry Knowles said something was wrong with Hayden's performance as Anakin is just twisting the words of Harry Knowles to fit his (the author's) view of what will be. Did this idiot ever stop to consider that Harry had those feelings about Anakin because that's the way he's supposed to feel about Anakin -- after all, Anakin in this movie is one step closer to becoming Darth Vader!

Actually that is what Knowels like about Anakin from what I have heard, so he is obvisoly twisting his words around, I think you have two very mad people out there now, Knowels and Kasadan because he basically twists Knowlels words around and calls Kasadan a liar, that just proves he doesn't know what he talks about.

I've read that guy's column for years now...and I agree with him about half the time, but I usually find him an interesting read. I mean I found THIS one to be interesting too...I just don't happen to agree with him.

I wouldn't be surprised if he made up the quotes he has in that article from the people on the line...

Nah..that one 40ish guy in the line...he does exist and he did slam TPM to me, so it wouldn't shock me if he did for Welles.. I met him and few of the other "liners" a bit over a week ago.

As far as I am concerned, the author of the article deserves this....
