heres the deal, yesterday I was all by my lonesome self with ma friend when he asked about currency in star wars (who knows why!) and I told him about credits and he asked what they were converted to aussie dollars and I had no idea. I know what credits vaguely buy but not the converting to our money bit.
Now curiosity is deep within me and I put to you:

whats one credit converted to american or if anyone knows aussie dollars?

Well, I know nothing of Aussie currency, so I can't begin to address that perticular question.

But, since Star Wars is imagined by George Lucas, an American, I'm betting that he just gave the dollar bill a different name. Like 20 bucks american would be 20 credits. Just a guess, but I'm betting Uncle George did it that way. To keep it simple for himself and others.

I'm fairly certain that Syrius is correct. And the ending of JK2 lends credence to that theory when Jan says "Lando owes me 5 credits!". :)

Like 20 bucks american would be 20 credits

No way. If you can almost buy your own ship with 10,000, wouldnt everyone have one? :)

Few things to consider here (mostly my speculations and opinions):

I think that Luke was exaggerating, and Han knew it.

Tatooine was comprised of mostly famers who couldn't even afford 10,000.

If a small personal ship is comparable to a car, then I think most everyone probably did have one. But, like I said, Tatooine is mostly just moisture farmers who can't afford even that.

An ISD is only 2-5 million. No way you could buy a comparable ships here for that price.

I think I remember this subject was touched up once, back when Viscera put a bounty of Gue head, and said 500,000 credits = 500,000,000 dollars, US. So a credit = a thousand dollars? And I'd be willing to bet there are units smaller than a credit.

Why couldn't Lucas just make it simple and call them "Star Dollars". :lol

And use Galatic Express?

I don't think Lucas made up the exchange rate for the credits to dollars. It was probably West End games that did it.

because credits sounds cooler

Maybe he just picked a naumber and didn't worry about Conversion rate. :p

So a credit = a thousand dollars?Riiiiiiight. So Jan bet Lando 5,000 dollars? :)

I still think it's roughly a dollar. But you have to take into consider economics: I think most people on most worlds were comparitively poor, so 2-5 million for an ISD (for example) might be more reasonable. Then again, if we're just going by what was presented in the movies, it'd be near impossible to gauge their worth.

And this is exactly why we see people tossing around insane amount of money in roleplays. :)

HA! I have thirty billion credits!

Maybe one Credit = a peso

:p

And I try to stay away from pricing things, because of this very fact. I don't know how to make it realistic.

Id say a credit = 4 Dollars

And which kind of credits? Republic? Imperial? :)

"Mind tricks don't work on me, only money." Obviously Old Republic whatchimacalit that Qui Gon tried to use was NOT universally accepted.

So, we have (at the time of Ep 1) Republic credits and then whatever else it is they were using. Then Imperial credits. Then NR and Imp. credits.

:p so what is the exchange rate between those!? :x

Galatic Express. Dont leave home without it.

Shawn

Hyphenated: As I recall, the exchange rate (post OT) is something like 5/4, Imperial to NR. I seem to recall a bar fight in one of the books where some guy was trying to short an alien on a bargain, and Luke had to mediate (or something like that).

Thrawn Trilogy. First one. And then you have local currencies, like Tatooine Pegats :)

And Barabel are only good when Denning writes them :)

*confused*

so is one credit=1 american doller or 4 american dollers? 0.o

Think about this -

in 1977, 10,000 was one hell of a lot of money. So, it would have made sense then for 1 credit to equal one dollar. Of course now, 10,000 aint nearly as large.

Thnece, if ANH was filmed today, the initial price for transport to Alderaan would have been more like 50,000.
