View Full Version : Policy change - avatar and sig limits

On behalf of the staff I thought I'd just let the general posting body know that we've altered the policy in a good way (had to get that last bit out :) ).

Anyways:

Before:

* Avatars + signatures combined limited to a total of 30kb or less.

Now:

* Avatars limited to 15kb at 150x150 pixels (this has been in place ever since we moved to vBulletin for those who aren't aware - the limit is an integrated part of the board software)

* Signatures limited to 30kb.

Bascially the limit that was in place before now only applies to your signatures instead of both avatars AND signatures - effectively giving you all an extra 15kb to play with.

SO DON'T ABUSE IT.

I'll be updating the FAQ to include the change shortly, unless there is some protest over the change. :x

Take care.

How about a total of 75k? <:-)

60 maybe? (30 each)

Is there an actual size (height or width) limit?

Generally 500 pixels or less for the sig works well - if your screen size is 800x600.

A 150 pixel limit (width) works well too.
--------

For anyone who visits the board regularly, even if they are on a slow modem the pics are generally sored in the cache folder so it doesn't really slow people down in general.

Not really. In the FAQ we simply ask that people keep things in order and don't post huge extravagant signatures. Besides which vB has been designed to only allow the signaure to display once per thread (afterwhich a person must manually select the option to have their signature added) - it keeps the space used at a low level. :)

This rule covers roleplayers as well, and they're a bit image happy :). We need to keep things down to a decent level so the board doesn't drag, and this current limit should catisfy most users. :)

All I know is, my ultra cool x-wing - moving gif pic that is my normal 'avatar' is bigger than 15 k:

You could always use it as your signature.

What Carr said. Indeed if you were to use it in your signature you wouldn't have much left over for anything else consdering that .gif image is 27kb. :|

Part of the reason that allowed us to change the 30kb limit to apply to signatures only was due to the avatars already being set at what is considered a small but acceptable size (15kb). It won't be increasing anymore I'm afraid unless we start cutting out of the signature limit.

But it's NOT my signature.

It's beem my main pic (except when I change it temporarily) for 3 years.... on multiple boards.... and on the many server's where those boards have travelled to.

Well thems the breaks I'm afraid. If you want to use it as your avatar you're going to have to cut it down somehow till it's under the 15kb bar. Sorry. :\

Or just leave and use it somewhere else.

That could be difficult...

Arrggh - you replied just as I was re-editing (misunderstood you're signature mention before). Sorry. >_<

Or just leave and use it somewhere else.
That might work out. Just use another avatar here.

Um' if I leave I won't be using anything here, anymore.

Now Darth why would you ever want to leave. I think you bring great insight on this board and are very knowledgable about the boxoffice and how can we play the summer box office game without you.

Oh - I thought you said you would use your avatar elsewhere. :\

If that is the case then I'm sorry to see you leave. You're a great part of our community here and it would be a great shame to see you leave over something like this. :(

Seriously dude, it's only the avatar/sig. Those can be replaced. Losing long term members like yourself can't be replaced.

Jedi Master Carr

Exactly Darth it is extremely trivial to leave here becasue of that unless you have other reasons. If you do share them with us maybe we can try to fix any problems you might be having.

My problems with this place have been increasing, this is just one more tiny thing that adds to the pile.

Hey Darth... sorry to butt in, but I was wondering: Just what problems are you having? I'm sure the staff would love to be able to try and address them. :)

Jedi Master Carr

Yes Darth, there is no point leaving if you got problems without discussing let us know I am sure we can try to find a way to deal with your concerns.

Darth, I've sent you an e-mail to talk to you about all this. I'd b grateful if you could respond when you get time. :)

Along with our more lenient rule regarding signature size, comes an all new implementation for those who abuse it repeatedly.

If you are asked by an Administrator or moderator on more than one occasion to downsize your sig, you will be placed on what we call “Signature Probation”. The period of the probation will be approximately two weeks. The details of being placed in that status means that you will have your signature removed from your profile and you will be unable to read it as your access to your control panel will become limited.

Another detail that will make you fully aware you are in this status is the fact that your user title will be changed for the duration of your probation to read “On Signature Probation”.

This is to help make the jobs the staff does here at our forums in enforcing the rules stated in our FAQ somewhat easier, so that they aren’t having to repeatedly admonish and or edit people who are not following the guidelines. With a little luck, such probation will not be required to be used, and everyone can enjoy the availability of a signature file and use it freely within the few rules we have established.

Thanks

This is an example post of an account on said probation. The account is unable to access either the Options or Preferences sections within the User Control Panel.

While talking about Avatars and usertitles, is there the slightest chance I could have usertitle like "If you are wondering about my avatar, I lost a bet.."

;)

Sorry Yog - we're not going to try and lessen your pain. You're going have to wear that avatar as though it's of of your own wishes. :p

On a serious note, I'd be devastated if I had to change my ultra cool Yoda avatar. Is there anyway someone could help D23 reduce the size of his X-Wing avatar? You know, the one he can't live without that he hasn't used in months. ;)

If he could email it to darthogre@yahoo.com, I could probably make it the right size to work on the forums.
