Miryan & Jared: That's because the Final Fantasy games 'allude to' (some would say 'rip off') lots of classic literature and mythology.

Masamune, for example, is the far eastern equivilant of Excalibur.

Shiva is the Hindu goddess of death and rebirth, as I recall.

Ifrits and Djinns are the progenitors of modern "Genies".

Odin, as I mentioned was the father of Loki and the 'All Father' of Norse mythology. Another allusion to which was the city 'Midgar' in FF7 - Midgard was considered the plane which the mortals lived upon, while Asgard was the realm of the gods.

I'm sure there's plenty of other referances, if you look for them. :)

And Leviathan is a name for a Sea God, and the Sephirothic system was a puzzle or maze that people needed to get through in order to reach heaven, and Tiamat was one of the lesser Dragon gods, and Lich is a god of Death or Rot or something (I forget what exactly) and so on and so on.

I personally think all the mythology and religious aspects they add into the Final Fantasy games only help to beautify the worlds, and enrich the culture of them.

I mean, it's not like all the referances they use are Hidden, and they're used over and over, so it's not like they're using the stuff simply cause they've run out of ideas =)

FF has huge storylines. as far as I played in Fallout, it was basically just like I said. "Go there, shoot them."

There didn't seem to be any real reason for it, other then to shoot a whole lot of people, and pokemon (There's monsters in D&D, Fallout, and FF, so =P)

Besides, at least in FF, you learned new techniques and crap. All there was in Fallout was shoot, or punch and kick if you didn't have a gun.

Anyway... if you want to play a good RPG, the Lunar games are my absolute favorite, bar none.

As far as PC RPGs go: I loathe Fallout. Never got why everyone is in love with these games.

Good RPGs are Anachronox, System Shock 1/2, Deus Ex (very overrated, IMO, but better than Fallout), Diablo 1/2 and the Ultima games.

Your taste is good for you, my taste is good for me. It's all a matter of opinion, and considering the popularity the Final Fantasy series (in particular) has gained over the years, it Does give off the impression that a whole lot more people seem to enjoy it, than not, when it comes to RPGs. (That and the fact that quite literally, you're the only person I've ever talked to who enjoys RPGs but doesn't like FF =)

I've just not seen much of anything significant added to the FF series since it was on nintendo, sans the eye candy. I mean...thats nice and all, but there's just better stuff out there by a long shot. So Fallout doesn't have five minute shots for when you shoot somebody. Its still much more immersive an experience IMO, and I don't need PS2 graphics to enjoy a game.

Case in point...Metal Gear Solid 2. It was an alright game. But seriously, it got to the point where half the damn thing was a DVD full of CG Japenese weirdo-logic. Nevermind the fact that the name "Solid Snake" only made me think of "turd", and the whole thing had so many unnecessary plot twists that it looked like somebody with Tourretts syndrome had scribbled all over it with a blue crayon. Sure...movie me a little. Sure, throw a plot twist in a little. But to a sane degree. Beat that game in 22 hours, and about, oh...10 of those hours were cutscenes. I think I'd rather watch the Final Fantasy movie than try to understand the plot (or lack thereof) in MGS2.
