A recent high demand from ground forces in the New Republic Special Forces has spawned the creation of a new support fighter, designed and built specifically for planetary action. The design of the fighter comes from Sorosuub, as do half of the components. The other components come from Kuat Drive Yards, which also manufactures the fighter. The Panther looks much like the older Sorosuub class of ship, the Preybird Starfighter.
An external weapons delivery system (rarely seen) boosts the efficiency of weapons release in atmosphere, though the system would not be as effective in space. An advanced targeting computer guides each weapon to its mark with astounding accuracy.
Each weapon has its own unique capability. The rapid firing heavy laser cannon can be used for dogfighting, strafing infantry, or to weaken enemy armor and shields. The proton bombs are more effective against stationary and slow moving targets, but are efficient against tanks and infantry as well. The cluster bombs are suited for enemy troop columns and formations, but can be used against tanks. The heavy proton rockets are well purposed for stationary targets and enemy vehicles, but are especially good at tracking down light ships or transports within atmosphere. Lastly, the concussion missiles are general purpose. Anything and everything can be targeted by a concussion missile, though it may only be damaged.
The Z-18 is not built as a starfighter, but a multi-role support fighter for ground forces. It is however equipped with a small hyperdrive system for various reasons where it would be necessary.
