View Full Version : An Archive Forum or not?

TheHolo.Net

I wanted to bring up a subject that the staff has discussed a few times with no real results beyond one.

It is in regards to the Archive forum for Roleplaying. The staff has already determined that it really isn’t necessary to archive threads any longer, due to the fact that our forums have no limit on page depth, unlike ezboard.

While doing my redesigns for the Jedi Style, I concluded that the Forum Home page could use to be shorted to some extent. We already got rid of the Replica Props Archive forums, and the next I see on my list is the RolePlaying Archive forum.

I would like to merge the topics that already exist there into either the RolePlaying forum or the Storytelling forum and then remove the Archive forum once its empty.

Does anyone have any thoughts or other suggestions.?

As long as the search function works, who cares?

While having an archive for serial RP's would be interesting...I don't think we need a general archive here.

Well, if we don't need it, we don't need it. :p

No Serial archive for you....

Archive for cereals? Why do we need Wheaties here again?

A serial archive sounds interesting, but I don't really mind either way.

Would all the threads currently in the archive be moved back to storytelling or rping? That's my only real concern. OUtside of that, do what needs to be done.

Well the search function here is excellent so I have no problems with us not having an archive forum, however like Taylor Millard had raised, would there be any way of putting threads back into their original forum before they were moved? Secondly, when the threads are moved back would they be at the top of the forum or near the last page, falling in line with the dates of the threads and posts?

While it's technically possible to move all the posts back into the forums they came from, it would be entirely too much work on the mods (I think), since they would have to do it on a thread-by-thread basis. The easiest way would be to just move them all into either the Roleplaying or Storytelling forum.

And they would fall in line with the dates on the thread. Nice feature of vB, that.

I don't think there's need for one anymore. Only good reason to have one is to keep classic threads easy to find, but the forum would only have a couple dozen threads.

I was thinking merge the Roleplaying and Archive forums, then put the shipyard sub-forum under Roleplaying. Under Storytelling you could make a sub-forum for an Archive or Hall of Fame, whatever you want to call it. Of course what goes in there shouldn't be biased or elitist.

I dont know if it was mentioned or not, but wouldnt un-locking the threads in the archive be bad for the threads themselves?

Lilaena De'Ville
Nov 9th, 2001, 09:04:17 PM
The threads should only be moved from the archive if they are kept closed. IMO.

EDIT: I misunderstood - see SWFans.Net's reply below.

We originally considered doing that with the current Archive, however we ruled it out on the grounds that it would be considered elitist and biased.

It's hard to have a 'Hall of Fame' and keep it from appearing elitist at the same time, since everyone will have their own opinions on what should go into it - and what shouldn't. Add to that the fact that only mods/admins would be able to put threads into such a forum, well then the rumour mill starts turning. :\

I was thinking about that too, just wanted to see someone else's opinion on it. Instead of that then, why not just make the archive a sub-forum under either one. Someone said the problem was mostly that the page was too long, so that would shorten it.

That's the plan if people want to keep the archive.

However pretty much everyone who has responded is in favour of removing the archive completely, since there is no longer any real practical use for it.

When I said to keep the threads closed, all I meant was that they are completed RPs, for the most part...and so should be closed, to keep people from trying to add to them. Right? Not that many people would try that, but you never know.

Forum closed, threads closed, same difference. I was only stating my opinion.

Not to mention that there are plenty of finished threads in the Roleplaying/Storytelling forums already that don't get posted to.

I fail to see any reason for locking threads that were previously in the archives. Why would anyone want to post in an already completed thread? :huh

Eek! *throws hands up in surrender*

Okay, I think I know what you were saying now Mr. Dot Net. Sorry... And I know that people don't post in already completed RPs...I just thought that it might be a good idea to keep them closed.

So its not a good idea. I can take it. Really. I can. *runs away crying :( *

This is what I said before I edited:

I don't quite follow you - why would it be a bad thing if the threads were unlocked? There are already plenty of threads in Roleplaying and Storytelling that are completed but not locked. Why should former archive threads be given special treatment and be locked after moving?

When Ogre posted after me and said that the threads weren't locked (only the forum was) I edited out my comment and directed readers to Ogre's post below. The 'misunderstood' part was in reference to how the archive forum was locked.
