I just finished with a little of my own custom hacking. I have made invisible users visible to Moderators, both in the Who's Online section at the footer of the Forum Index and in the Who's Online activity display. Now I am attempting to figure out how to insert the "*" into the activity display so that invisible users are identified to Admins and Mods in that display, instead of looking like everyone else.

TheHolo.Net
Nov 2nd, 2001, 03:44:14 PM
The modifications are now complete. Invisible users stand out in the <a href=http://www.swforums.net/forum/online.php?s=>Who's Online</a> activity display, just as they do in the section on the front page, with an asterisk next to their username. Non Mods or Admins are unable to see said users in either display.

I have finally joined the ranks of the hackers who actually release their own on vbulletin.org. Someone requested exactly what I had done here in making mods able to see invisibles, and I documented and released it. Here is a link for my own reference to add to this list.

I did a template modification to all template sets and a small hack that makes the cell light up properly. the addition is in the User Control Panel, and is a quick link to the page to modify your Avatar.

The small hack needed to make the cell light up properly is here:

I have the edit/report feature added to the Jedi style as of this point. I'll get it applied to the other styles here in a little while. :)

Administrators and Moderators see the edit button in all posts, while posters only see the edit button in their own posts and instead see the "report" button in its place in all other member's posts.

Note: Admins don't see the report button at all, while mods see both the report and edit buttons.

The feature has been added to all styles except vBulletin Standard, which has been left as the default.

Nup and I colaborated and made this hack also function with style sets that have a background image in the bar that was suposed to blink colors, so that the image flashes as well. I do believe it was applied to all the style sets, and will make certian soon. (soon = some time tomorrow unless Nup gets it first)

Yep... should work with the Style Sets that have a background image, too. However, I got a strange error when trying to send myself a PM. Don't know if it was a one time thing, or something more permanent, but the PM went through regardless.

The ThreadSpinner is great. It's not quite up to the simplicity of ezboard's mass moderation feature (which had check boxes next to the threads and mod options down the bottom), but pretty damn close. :)

TheHolo.Net
Jan 25th, 2002, 09:42:36 PM
IMO, the ability to display as many threads as you specify per forum to perfom mass tasks on and being able to mix and match functions makes it superior to ezboard's mass function abillity. :)

I don't know if you've seen it before, but I'm considering implementing an "Away Message" hack, which basically works like an AIM away message, but marks a poster as being away (like when he/she goes on vacation). That way, people don't an excuse to post the "I'm leaving! ... for 3 days" types of threads.

Champion of the Force
Jan 27th, 2002, 08:13:41 PM
How exactly does that work? It would have to be clearly visible (somewhere) otherwise most wouldn't see it and know.

TheHolo.Net
Jan 27th, 2002, 08:16:55 PM
From looking at the hack today, some modifications may need to be requested to make it work properly on our forums but I am not certian.

The way it works it it adds a field to the user profile when they set themselves as away through their control panel, which states they are away and why, but the part that may need modification is the way it displays the status in posts. It is based on the online offline icons, which only one of our style sets uses, while the others use text.

Champion of the Force
Jan 27th, 2002, 08:38:07 PM
It is based on the online offline icons, which only one of our style sets uses, while the others use text.
The Basic themes (plus the Text Based ones as well I think) don't even have the text.

It sounds like a nice idea but I have a hunch many will still resort to threads announcing their absence since threads are much more visible than some text/an icon under the username (which users would still have to go searching for to see).

Interesting. I added log in fields to he new reply template in the Star Wars set and I am able to change which user I am posting with as I post, tough it keepm me logged in as that user after posting.

For example, I was logged in as SWFans.Net when I made the testing post, but I filled in the information for Ethereal Ogre in the log in fileds before submitting the reply. It made my post one by the Ethereal Ogre account and returned me to the thread still logged in as Ethereal Ogre. This post I am replying while logged in as Ethereal Ogre, but I am changing the username and Pw fields to make it post as SWFans.Net

Hey, there wouldn't be one where if you put in a code it (permenantly) puts in a random name from the member list, would there? :)

TheHolo.Net
Feb 20th, 2002, 05:40:17 PM
Not that I am aware of, though a javascript that generates random numbers (userIDs all translate from numers) could probably be written and inserted into a template since scripts are censored in posts.

The variable $ bbusername[#####] with actual numbers where the # signs are and no space after the $ sign should return a userID, I think.. tests

$bbusername[1]

Hmm, I would have to experiment more.

The latest hack is rather annoying in my opinion. Yeah it is fun but when I keep coming to OOC and seeing my name titled in two threads now, second one joking :) that I "suck", gets old. That is just my thing =P

To be honest, I really didn’t find Sanis’ thread very appropriate, or funny. At least I refrained from being insulting in any way, even though I know his was only a joke, it just didn’t fit the spirit of how I foresaw the use of this hack. But to each their own.

Champion of the Force

Well I'm 100% against the code being put into the FAQ or listed anywhere for anyone to find and use.

I was personally insulted at first when I saw Sanis' thread since it corresponded with the timing of Ogre using my threads for his latest announcements and I thought some people were having a go at me. It took me a while to figure the 'joke' out but even now I'm still not very impressed.

Imagine how a newbie would feel if they logged on for the first time and saw a thread like that with their name in it.

I say remove the code totally. It can only lead to bad things

Probably a good idea. Though I did put the hack to a practical use within the Star Wars style sets. Similar to ezboard at the top of the page inside a forum, it displays the name you are logged in as.

<a href=http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=35644>Send author PM on thread move</a>

TheHolo.Net

The preceding hack adds a checkbox to the move thread screen which is by default checked. No matter which of the three choices you choose in the move thread screen, if that checkbox is checked, an automated PM will be sent to the thread author of the thread being moved. :)

Here is a sample message I recieved from myself via PM when testing.(note: the link won't be valid since I moved the thread back)
Your thread entitled Off shoot has been moved to the Moderators & Administrators Only forum. You can find it by clicking:

http://www.swforums.net/forum/showth...?threadid=12171

This is an automated message, DO NOT REPLY.A couple of notes regarding this hack. If the user does not have popup on PM enabled it doesn't matter, it will do the popup message about getting a PM regardless, but not change their default setting. The second thing is, if a user has email notify on PM enabled this hack will still not notify them they have a PM via email. I may be able to figure out how to change that second part, I may not.

Another note, related in a way:

I have found a way to safely (without accidentally deleting the thread) remove a thread "Moved:" redirect for a moved thread. If you move the thread back to the forum where the redirect was, the redirect will disappear, then you can move (the first move option/radio button) the thread back to wherever you moved it originally and choose the option to just move and the redirect will not be there any longer at all. :)

One more final note about the PM when moving topics hack:

Even if the recipient has PM’s disabled they will receive this one with the popup message. Now to look into having it send an email notify by default as well.

Just a query about that PM when moved hack. Does it always send the PM whenever you move, or just when you move a thread and leave no link/copy in the previous forum?

(I ask because in the thread I've just moved the thing about the PM notification was only listed for the 'move with no link' option)

TheHolo.Net
Mar 10th, 2002, 03:27:02 AM
It works with any option you choose, if checked.

I don't see any check options on my screen. :huh

TheHolo.Net
Mar 10th, 2002, 03:45:30 AM
The send PM option is a check box. I am rearranging the move thread template so that it is placed a little better and isn't confusing right now. I have the Star Wars style done and am about to do the others.

TheHolo.Net
Mar 10th, 2002, 03:49:25 AM
Ahh, the template for the Basic style was missing the checkbox, so no PM was sent on your move.

A note about the quote boxes:

I have made a request of the writer of the hack (BTW: The method I installed the feature here is not a hack, I only partially followed his instructions) and asked him if it would be possible to have the backgrounds of the boxes alternate in an opposite fashion as compared to the alternating reply background colors, and he has agreed to help out with the code in a few days.

Depending on how it is done, I will most likely have to change my implementation somewhat, so that it is in fact a hack and not just a custom vbCode. In effect that will also make it so that
and
boxes will look the same way as the quote ones do, which is not the case right now.

This is a reminder to myself to post to that topic at the hack forum again in a few days as he asked and to let those of you interested, know what is happening. :)

The Mod CP is your friend:

TheHolo.Net

Admins and Mods can now list users who have access to any particular forum.

Mods use the "List by Access Mask" link in their CP and admins will find the same link after clicking the "Find" link in theirs.

I modified this hack just a little to work properly for moderators and for this version of vB since it was made for 2.0.3<ul> <a href=http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?threadid=28248>List users by access masks</a>
Note: This only works for moderators in the forums which they are assigned. If they try to list user's access masks in forums they have no permission to moderate they are returned to the page where the list is presented, with no errors.

Current mods will have global access since they are a part of the mod usergroup, while new moderators for the GJO forums will only have access to their respective forums.

I have done a couple more custom hacks of my own that enable moderators some administrator functions. :D<ul> Moderators are now able to look up users by email address as well as the way it was before, just username. Moderators are also now able to use the IP search features built into vBulletin, which blow those of ezboard’s out of the water by a mile. You can actually input just a couple sets of numbers from an IP address and click search and get a list of all the users that have posted with that set of numbers in their IP.
Modified the Mark Forum Read hack by incorporating some of the elements from the newer version of the same hack I installed before.

Notes for self: I added a new function (markforumread_parentgroup) to member.php. Will look into the optimizations he had done to the hack and the possibility of incorporating them into ours for less DB load.

The newer version of the hack I took the new function from can be found:<ul> <a href=http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32091>Persistent Mark Forum Read</a>
It is currently only available in the SW styles, but I plan to implement it across all styles when we start opening the new group forums.

Holy frelling dren!!!!

I had a look through the new release of the “Mark Forum Read” DB hack and applied the creator’s recent index.php optimizations. And was quite successful. Before the optimization, a load of the main forum index generated 508 DB queries (way to frelling many). After the optimization, a load of the main forum index now only generates 29 DB queries. (whooooohooooo! =D ). I notice the index loads a little faster now, and it should be much easier on server load as well. :D :D :D

No problem at all, I just use this thread for refrence for myself and what has been done and added as far as hacks go. Anyone who would like to know more about the queries generated when loading the index, or any php file on our sever for that matter, I'll give you the syntax for it. You just add a ?explain=q after the name of the php file. Here is a hot link to see the query detail for the main forum index.

TheHolo.Net

It isn’t up to us to dictate how a group board should be run and what rules they have. They were offered as much independence as possible when moving their boards here, and that’s really all this hack is for. I am encouraging them to chose only to disable swearing in their private forums and TBH appears to have taken the stance of checking with all the members who have access to their private forum to find out if any would be offended before they disable swearing, which I find very admirable and agreeable, but I still have no say on their decisions be they for or against.

ReaperFett
Oct 31st, 2002, 02:01:46 PM
Well, I think that by doing this would end up with more swearing in the non-Group forums.

I just wrote, tested, and installed a small hack that highlights private forum names in a different color from non private forums in the access mask forum list for individual users. It does require an additional option be set to yes in the "edit - forum" or "add forum" sections, "Display as private forum in access mask list" (right under yes or no as private forum), but it will make editing forum specific mod access masks so much easier. :)

TheHolo.Net
Dec 2nd, 2002, 04:50:03 PM
Its a feature you don't use, not being a group forum mod.

When a mod wants to allow a user into a private forum he edits what are called access masks, which display a list of all the forums he/she moderates and gives the options to allow access or deny or leave at default.

Well, my hack makes it obvious in that list of forums, which are private forums and which are not. Its most helpful for me since my list of forums in access masks is gigantic (yours would be too since you are a super mod). It makes it very obvious which forums are private forums and which are not, rather than having to memorize them all.
