Stars for ranks?

I know we said no to the idea of ranks, but on the site Morgan linked to in OOC, they use stars:

They look pretty. :)

Or maybe instead of using them for ranks, we could just use them to help signify user position (eg. 1 star - Poster, 3 stars - Mod, 5 stars - Admin).

They look to be recolored rating stars, which we already have in our image set as part of the standard vBulletin package. I myself don't much like the idea of using them in titles.

Actually, there are seperate images for stars, there is a single image for up to 5 stars, which could be recolored.

I am considering implementing stars as you suggested, but not so much as for ranks, as for poster levels, based on post counts. I am considering three or four levels.

First level - No stars.

Second level - 1 star

How about this:

0-49 posts - 1 star

50-499 posts - 2 stars

500 -4999 posts - 3 stars

Moderator - 4 stars

Administrator - 5 stars

You'd want to have the ranks go a reasonable height in posts, otherwise everyone would reach them within a month.

There's still the possible problem of spamming to gain levels, however I've discovered that deleting threads also deletes posts off a users total that they may have done in the deleted thread, so that help controls the problem there. Plus we can edit user totals as well.

I like, but I think I'd like to adjust it just a little and make it so Mods and Admins stick out a little more.

0-49 posts - no star

50-499 posts - 1 stars

500 -4999 posts - 2 stars

5000+ - 3 stars

Moderator - 4 stars (silver/gray)

Administrator - 5 stars (gold)

All user level stars would be the blue ones.

The system has been put into place.

An aside note: Admins and Mods will have to have their stars added to their title after appointment as it would not let me add images to the standard titles for Admins and Mods, per their group.

Any problems that may arise from it can easily be handled by either the means David suggested or by abolishing the policy completely. Nice things about vBulletin, its easily changed and retroactive, so if it is changed, all old posts are affected, just like new ones.

The threat of removing a poster's total would probably scare spammers off.
