Extra special thanks to Ry27 for starting this thread (http://pub2.ezboard.com/fswvstitanicfrm21.showMessage?topicID=3000.topic) which is what inspired me to get back on track with this project. Ry made a killer pass, and I got all jealous because mine is like four years behind, so I got down to it and it's just about done.

Check out this comparison pic between a scan of the screen used one and my version: (please note the "Stompy Khur ate my balls" watermark on this pic! The days of my stuff being sold on e-bay by others is gone!!! :>)

<IMG SRC=http://www.mattmunson.com/ezboard/show_n_tell.jpg>

EVERY font on my card is either a custom font made by me, or a heavily modified stock font. A lot of the text is either helvetica or Arial bold with a bunch of horizontal and vertical compression/stretches run on them

Every image on the card is either a vector drawing, or a high resolution scan EXCEPT the korben pic. This means that I can print at ULTRA high resolution (1200X2400) and the lines will be super crisp all around. The little pic of the american express card was provided by a board member, and is a great high quality scan.

Now all I need is to find a good high res pic of bruce. I'm gonna get 48thRonin working on it, but I'm not sure what his french book looks like close up. We shall see.

I am interested in hearing comments and critiques on my pass, in case I missed a detail, or if something needs to be a mm one way, or a mm the other.

Thanks for all the kind words guys!

Fin- if you can scan it at higher res, I would love it. Maybe double the resolution??? Again, I only need the two Korben faces, so don't worry about the rest of the pass.

PF2K, yeah, Ry's pass is stellar! I got so bummed that someone beat me to the punch that i sat up all last night and cried! Ok, maybe not ALL night, but I was bummed. I was happy to finally get the rest of it finished. Now I just have to do the carcass.

PH: There's really no easy way to restore low res scans to a high res status of photos. With line art, you can do stuff like I did with the pass, but for photos, (like the one you sent me) it's really pretty much a lost cause. You can never bring back pixels once they are lost.

Matt,

Oh, you a so the man! Those are incredible!

Are you going to be offering your own version of the Multi-Pass with the slide in card?

MattMunson
Sep 7th, 2001, 12:27:13 AM
Yeah, the plan is to finish the entire card, and do the slide in thing like I had planned. MEI Jedi just sent me a little file with a better font for some text. here's the changes:

Ok, got another pic. I made the change that Hypo suggested, and I also worked on the "U" in "MULTI" so that it looks a little closer.

Please keep the feedback comin'! This has been very helpful.

Sep 7th, 2001, 01:27:24 PM
Not bad, Munson :) Hypo is correct - it's 144E. Also, I can't say for sure, but it appears that the line right above it might actually be PIER 23-29, rather than 28 - it's almost too close to call though.

I had actually intended to bring the book with me when I came down, but I forgot it, of course <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif ALT=":\"> We'll have to figure out when I can get it to you, so you can play around with the Bruce pic.

MattMunson
Sep 7th, 2001, 02:16:34 PM
I dunno arp, looks like an 8 to me. See how there's a couple red pixels down in the lower left hand leg of the character? I think if it was a 9, that would not be there. Do you have the book handy? Maybe you could check the detail for me. Also, Im a little worried about my spelling of Metropolitan. I'm wondnering if it was spelled with another 'i' at the end, as it was a french made flic. It appears as if there is an extra letter in my rough master scan, but I'm not sure. Is that detail visible in that book of yours tim???

The 48th Ronin
Sep 7th, 2001, 02:45:14 PM
Are you using the same font for the address that you used for the "Korben Dallas"? The numbers don't look "blocky" enough, especially the 8, 9, and 0. The font they used looks somewhat similar to a Eurostyle-type font - or one of the ridiculous number of variations - so the 8 and 9 are very similar. The bottom "leg" of the 9 hooks back up before it ends. At least that's how it appears in the book.

"Metropolitan" is correct - no fancy French spelling.

MattMunson

Okie Dokie. Here is another comparison pic.

<IMG SRC=http://www.mattmunson.com/ezboard/show_n_tell4.jpg>

Here are the changes that were made to get to this verison:
1. Re-sculpted the "U" in "MULTI", and I think i finally got it right.
2. Changed the text to the Eurostyle font that was recommended. Thanks guys!
3. Color corrected the bars on the visa card, the yellow behind the text, and the yellow on the blue/yellow bars.
4. Color corrected the text at the very bottom of the pass so that it matches a bit better.
5. changed the font on the L/5 part to Eurostyle
6. Moved the words "Korben Dallas" to the left a little to align them with the yellow box below.
7. Color corrected the text under the two photo boxes

I think that's it. Boy, now I know how JediVic feels!

don't hate me, matt.. but it seems to my eye that there's not enough leading space at the bottom of the top yellow box, and a hair too much on the bottom box..

i am referring to the spaces between the bottom of the letters and the edges of the yellow borders.

too much white space in the border around "driving license" as well..

it COULD just be the watermark playing an optical illusion, though.. get a second opinion. :)

MattMunson
Sep 7th, 2001, 03:58:18 PM
Roller, GREAT stuff. I didn't notice that before, but it certainly looks like you're right. Here's another shot....

<IMG SRC=http://www.mattmunson.com/ezboard/show_n_tell5.jpg>

This includes the changes that Rollerboi suggested about the yellow space, and i also took a closer look at the white behind the driving license text, and I beleive it to be a capsule, not a rectangle, so I changed that and shrunk it down. Also, I noticed in the last go round that the text was a bit thin on the vital stats, so i upsized it and correcte the Kerning a bit.

Notice that this also includes the blue face. This is just a place holder, but it uses a weird masking technique that I had never used before, so I wanted to give it a try. turned out pretty good. Disregard the duplicity of the black lines over the blue face. Those will go away later.

Lemme know whatcha think. Please keep the critiques coming! This is all very helpful to me.

Ok, I think this is the last one:

<IMG SRC=http://www.mattmunson.com/ezboard/show_n_tell6.jpg>

I finally put some text onto the face of the tiny AMEX card at the bottom (you can't see it here, but it will be there in the printed one). I resized the Korben text, the vital stats, and also color corrected them a bit.

Sith Sheriff Brody

SOMEthing is sized funny. On the orig., the "KORBEN DALLAS" text's top is level with the outline of his pic. See?

Also, I personally feel that the "KORBEN DALLAS" font is not blocky enough. Compare the Os.

Also also (;) ) I think the 'vital stats' text needs to be a tad taller, and the spacing between lines a tad smaller.

don't hate me Matt (;) ), but a few more suggestions:

the tiny texts at the bottom (5 years fed. approval/new york city metropolitan) look to be different colors on the real one. the "NYC metro" text looks to be the same pink as the big "korben dallas" letter, and the "5 year" text looks to be red.

also, it looks like they removed the white border from the amex card...

maybe the "class HH allowance" should be a bit shorter and bolder as well.

maybe the measurement line next to the blue head should be narrower too :)

but that's all i can see :)

you beat me to it, hypo.. ;) also the "negative" head is a little too small. i see more blue stripes on the left side than I should, and the top of the head should be closer to the top of the square..

Regardless of the book scan, the screencaps of the props show that the "MULTIPASS" text is the same color as the bottom (blue-purple) box.

Which raises an interesting set of questions...

Guys!

Thanks again for all the great feedback:

SSBrody: You're right! I dunno how that eluded my attention. i took a closer look and noticed that the outlines of the two picture boxes managed to slip down a bit. i have fixed that now. as far as the font goes, you're right, it's not blocky enough, but it was the best I could do. I think it would take more time than Im willing to build another custom font. Still, i see your point. You're also right about the vital stats text. I'll beef it up a bit more.

Hypo: Border on the amex is fixed. Good eye. I missed that. as far as the HH allowance, it's hard to bold-up text. I'll fiddle with it a bit, but I think it's as close as I'm going to get. The colors I will also work on.

The blue head thing is totally still a work in progress, as I'm waiting for a better scan. that will be fixed eventually. I'll post another comparison shot in a couple minutes.

MattMunson
Sep 7th, 2001, 07:45:07 PM
WOWZERS! I was thinking of something hypo said about bolding, and all of a sudden it occurred to me that there IS a simple way to do it in Illustrator! Anyhow, I went back in a "bolded-up" all of the text that I thought always needed it, and I think I'm WAAAY closer to the real thing now. I'm going to let it slide that I don't have the EXACT font that was used, though I might experiment for a second.

Anyhow, here's the latest. this includes all of the changes that were mentioned above, most notably the font bolding.

Lemme konw whatcha think.

now that looks pretty spot on!

I'd only do two things before I'd consider it perfect :)

enlarge the amex card to be the same size as the visa.

and maybe bold or enlarge the L/5 in the white box a tiny bit.

but after that i really can't see anyhting else! :) (except for the measurement lines next to the blue head being too bold)

MattMunson

Fink, YES, I want that scan :>
Hypo, you're right about the L/5. I'm on it. The amex needs to be a bit larger, but if you look at the master, it's still a bit smaller than the visa. Another one comin' right up!

MattMunson
Sep 7th, 2001, 08:22:27 PM
Wow, this is practically becoming an active project!

Ok, here's the last one for today:

<IMG SRC=http://www.mattmunson.com/ezboard/show_n_tell8.jpg>

This includes the slightly enlarged AMEX card as per hypo, the black lines in the blue face have been thinned a bit, and I also moved the "Korben Dallas" text a little tiny bit and stretched out the yellow boxes a bit. I also noticed that there are black borders around the blue bars that are behind the blue face. You can't really see them on this pic, but they are there. I also found a little flaw in one of the face boxes while I was dorkin' around with the text. Oh, the L/5 is also a bit bolder.

Now that I look at it, the lines in the blue bar part need to be thinner still, and the notch at the top is a bit long.

keep the feedback comin'! I"m lovin it!

-SSB

Sith Sheriff Brody
Sep 7th, 2001, 09:24:28 PM
The Amex card still needs some tweaking...

The little scale on the inverse pic is to thick/bold.

Did you catch my thing about the color of the "MULTI PASS" text? See the other thread for the caps — Those props' text were that same purple-blue as the bottom box. Although, I think the black does look better. Your call.

And (I feel personally that) the text in the boxes under the pics should be centered vertically. It just looks better, and we do want this to be nicer than the orig, right?

Glad to help.

Ok, next one is ready:

<IMG SRC=http://www.mattmunson.com/ezboard/show_n_tell9.jpg>

Here are the changes for this round:
"MULTI" text is now purple. Though the scan has it as black, the screen used version is CLEARLY purple, so I decided to go with that.

The bottom yellow box has been compressed a bit, and is now horizontally justified with the bottom of the picture boxes. This seems accurate to the screen version, as was pointed out earlier.

"Korben" text is a tad smaller. I agree with hypo that it seemed a bit too big in the last one.

Black lines on the blue photo have been narrowed. They seem like they may be a tad too thick, but I think thats an illusion created by some of the black in the jpg underneath it.

Lastly, I centered the numbers under the pics. I had it like this for a while, but bumped them up a pixel or two a while back to maintain accuracy. I think it looks better centered, but it's not as accurate. Lemme konw what you guys think.

I messed around with the AMEX logo a bit. Basically, i just expanded it 110% while keeping my mask at the same size, so it's total displayed area has remained the same, but it has been scaled up a bit. This seems to jibe with what is seen on screen, as the central chevron is much closer to the bottom of the card than it actually appears on a real amex card. The pic on the original looks abit darker, but I am dismissing that as just a bad repro. Who knows.

Oh, and I'm also going to start working on the back of the card too.

rollerboi
Sep 10th, 2001, 02:37:00 PM
In the stats, it says HR: BWN / F.. on the original it doesn't look like there are leading/trailing spaces around the slash..

I've been taking a closer look at the back of the pass, and I'm no longer convinced it's a graphic. It might actually be a bas-relief like thing, made with a few inches of half round rod.

Take a look at these pics:

Maybe the four little guys are graphics, and the only 3D structure is the indented yellow rect.

The yellow rectangle has 'shadows' and 'highlights' in the 'right' places, IF it's sunken into the surface of the graphic. I don't see anything like that for the 4 bars. We need better references.

Perhaps the 4 little bars + rectangles are some kinda stylized electrical contacts. Just a guess.

Hey guys,
I've been keeping somewhat up to date on this project, lookin' good Matt!

One thing bothers me on the graphics, the Korben Dallas type.
Isn't the font on the original card Eurostyle? It sure looks like it to me. I tend to use the typeface quite a bit and recognized it right away. It has the distinctive flat sides and rounded corners on the "O" and "D".
Specifically it looks like Eurostyle "Demi". If you need the font I got it for Mac.

MattMunson
Sep 13th, 2001, 01:04:26 PM
Oh, by the way, that post by Cerney1 was me. I was on his computer and didnt notice that he was logged in.

And Chris, great to see you following along... AND THANK YOU FOR THE FONT SUGGESTION!!!

I dunno how I missed that, as someone pointed out Eurostyle to me a while back. I changed ALL of the other text to Eurostyle, but somehow, I overlooked changing the Korben text. Go figure. So I went back just now and checked it, and it was still helvetica. Silly me. Anyhow, I gues what I mean is thanks for bringing it to my attention. I'll put together another sample in a second.

EDIT:

Ok, here's the font fix.
