Hey all-
Out of curiosity, does anyone know what the base helmets were for the Rebel Fleet Trooper, and the Y-Wing Pilots from Return Of The Jedi? I'm working on a Rebel tutorial/reference site for the Rebel Legion, and I'd like to have the info to put up. Also, it's good to know if I come across some extra cash! ;) For those interested, the site's address is www.geocities.com/rebelco...stumer.htm (http://www.geocities.com/rebelcostumer/rebelcostumer.htm)
Also, if anyone has any info they wish to add to the page, in terms of tutorials and/or reference shots, it would be greatly appreciated. Please keep in mind while looking at the page that it's a work in progress, and not as polished as similar sites, like Obi-Wan's Jedi Academy or the Parts Of Star Wars. If you have feedback, please click on the "email" link, or drop me a line at rebelcostumer@yahoo.com.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

I asked about the y-wing helmet a couple of weeks ago, and no one bit, maybe with both of us asking... I do believe the rebel fleet trooper helmet is a WWII navy gunners helmet.

I do believe you are correct. With the back slope and front face shield and that little radio box added.

Actually, it's called a Navy "Talker" helmet. Used by battleship radiomen on WWII U.S. Navy craft.

I believe the Y-Wing helmet was based off a racecar driver's helmet.

I based my Y-wing off of an old motorcycle helmet I had.
Looked good to me?

Here are a couple of shots of Steve's kick-ass Y-W pilot helmet:

The Y-wing helmet was not based on any existing helmet. It was an original design for the film, and constructed of vacuum-formed plastic.
JT,
The weathering on your helmet is perhaps the best, and most natural, I have seen. Very nice!

I wish I could take credit for that! :)
That Y-Wing helmet belongs to Steve. I agree, that's the best weathering I've seen so far!

Thanks a lot, folks. I remembered the Fleet Trooper helmet was identified about four months ago in another thread I started, but being the dolt I am, I forgot to copy down the information.
And the Y-Wing was scratch built? Cool....I had seen some flight helmets similar to it, and I hadn't even thought of racing helmets, but nothing close enough to the piece, even with heavy modification.
Thank you!

I believe the rebel trooper helmets were cast from the WWII helmet and the actual (v. heavy) metal helmet was not used in the final prop. The imperial trooper and death star gunner helmets were also based on the same WWII helmet I think.
Steve Altmann in Australia makes a licensed version, but it's not very accurate (so i've been told :) )
Take care

I thought the Y-Wing helmets were based on an existing piece.
The one is Chronicles has a sticker on the front with English writing. It's painted and weathered over- always thought that was on the original helmet.

Hrm, Chris....I know Shannon reminded me of a helmet in an antique military store over in Pomona, CA that looked a LOT like the Y-Wing, which I forgot about....
Who knows?
