This thread is to inform all of members of the roleplay community what's going to be happening to our mutual home very, very soon. For those of you who haven't been keeping up with the CSC Thread currently in the Replica Props forum (link at the top of the board), SWFans will be moving to a new Messageboard solution: vBulletin.

vB is a powerful piece of software that has all the positive features EZboard has and then some - Everything from iFrames down to Custom Titles. Also, vB has the option to import threads from EZboard to their system, making it so that none of the threads you've all put so much work into here have to be lost in the move.

Since one person ultimately has to pay for both the vB license and the cost of hosting, I've decided to take the iniative and do so myself. All told, it's going to be between $250-300 US. I have no qualms with paying every last penny of it to insure that SWFans can continue to thrive. However, I know that some people are uncomfortable with the concept of one person paying the entire bill. So I've set up a Pay Pal account to allow people to donate money for this cause. However, I'm not going to publish the details of my PayPal account until after the board is purchased, up and running. The reason for this is so that you all know your money isn't being squandered.

I will be purchasing everything sometime within the next few hours (tomorrow, at the absolute latest). After that, it's going to take some time for the Admins to set everything up and make sure it's all running smoothly. I estimate that this will take about a week, after which, we can open our doors to the public, so to speak.

For full details, I suggest reading through some of the later posts in the CSC Discussion thread. Have a great day everyone. :) (Ug, I think that last line comes from helping customers all day  )

Oh, I almost forgot to mention: Although I'm not 100% clear on this, it seems that the Replica Props people will be breaking away to move to their own seperate board. I, of course, fully support their choice. However, (to the best of my knowledge) there will still be a Replica Props forum at the new board.

Just wanna know....how tough is it to get multiple accounts and such...especially for turds like me who have about 40 or so :p

Individual users may register as many accounts as they wish. I made sure of that ahead of time (seeing as how I have just about as many :) )

That goes doubly for me... if you need any help, just let me know and I'll contribute as best I can.

I'm sorry to see the Replica Props people splitting away, but I certainly wish them the best of luck. :) Maybe we can at least link the two boards so that people can easily jump from one to the other...

That definitely sounds like a plan, Fig. Of course, we'll have to clear it with them first, but I don't think that there will be any problems with that.

As was mentioned in the thread, there is simply no way to provide hosting for them, as well. They may chose to stay with EZboard (they don't have to pay over $1,500/year for CSC Gold, after all) or they can make arrangements to move. It's their own prerogative.

The new board will host all the General forums as well Reaper. We're not going to leave the BO community behind. :)

Those of you who still don't follow - Reaper was referring to the SW Films, Boxoffice, EU etc. forums here on SWFans.

For those who still aren't clear on the move, do what Nup said and check out the original CSC thread that's linked up the top of the forum. You should find most of your answers there.

One of the things I'm trying to see is if there's any way to not be an Admin at the new board, since it would be presumptuous of me to take on a role I wasn't assigned.

I think I might be able to accomplish this by handing off my vB password and letting one of the other Admins change it.

Atreyu
Sep 14th, 2001, 11:23:34 PM
You could make the admin of the board 'SWFans.Net' or some other name (I'm assuming the main admin is granted power by their username) and then hand it over to someone else.

Considering you're footing the initial bill I don't think anyone is going to complain about you being in charge of the new board Nup. :)

Well, even if my account for the board isn't an Admin, I will still have the power to modify the board and all those other things. Which is essentially the same thing.

And I honestly don't think that I have the maturity level to handle an Admin position at a board of this size. There's a lot more responsibility in being an Admin than a Mod.

Ummm, duh. Didn't you know that Nup? :)

One of the first things I was going to request after we had settled into the new board was to have themes set to different locations of the SW Universe - Tatooine (desert colours), Hoth (blue/white colours), Endor (green colours), Coruscant (blue/black/red/whatever colours) etc.

I'm not 100% certain, but I think you can also set the graphics with each theme. So you could have banners, buttons, icons etc. in tune with each location.

That way, the admins won't have to juggle with the colour settings every 6 months. You can let the users decide.

vBulletin - it's one hell of a software. And that's just the tip off the iceberg. :)

ReaperFett
Sep 15th, 2001, 09:30:35 PM
for Coruscant, it is too diverse. Could I reccomend Imperial (Dark blues, blacks) and NR (Reds, bright colours)?

Atreyu
Sep 15th, 2001, 09:41:01 PM
You could. Those ones I listed were only examples. :)

Of course, if themes were to be implemented (we've got to get the new board up and running first :) ) it would pay to try and have them all different from one another. It kind of defeats the purpose if you give users the choice but then have half of them near identical to one another. :)

Darth Turbogeek and I are discussing ways to implement a Master Account system at the new board, so that you can select which ID you wish to post under from a drop down menu at the reply screen.
