Short answer: no. There are different theories as to how it could work, but it is currently impossible to build ANYthing that looks like a lightsabre and can do the things a lightsabre does. Sorry.:)

from what ive heard the US government has what can be considered a lightsabre, the info i got was they designed a device for space repair, since theres no oxygen in space its pretty hard to use a welding torch (ie. no O2 no fire:) ) so they designed a device which is similar to a lightsabre , since lazers (ie. light) needs no O2 to heat its the only real good way to fix things in space
but theres a few catches
- it needs about a medium sized room full of equipment and 2 people to operate,
- and its usable only in space, somehting about 0 g's or something i dont really remember.
- the blade is a few inches long (2 -3) , (whereas lightsabres is supposed to be like 34 inches)
- the blade is pretty much invisible
- the blade cant be stopped by another blade
- and its still in the experimental stages, so it may be a while till its actually used for anything newsworthy.
but Bromines right if your thinking of having anything personally that works and looks like a lightsabre from the movies you probably never going to see one in your life time.
