if Im holding 3 coins(american) in my hand and they = 55 cents . but one of them is NOT a nickel , what coins am I holding?

You are holding two quarters and a nickel. One of them, in fact, two of them, are not nickels, but the other one is.

Here's one for you Buff:

Three men went on a trip and decided to rent out a hotel room and split the cost. The room cost $30. They each contributed $10 and paid the manager at the desk.

A little while later, the manager realized that the hotel was having a special that weekend, and he should have charged the men only $25. He gives the bellboy $5 to give back to the men. On his way to the room, the bellboy can't figure out how to split $5 three ways. When he gets to the room, he gives each man $1 and pockets the remaining $2.

So that means, each man paid $9 for the room $10 - $1 = $9.) The bellboy has $2. $9 times 3 men is $27 plus the $2 the bellboy has equals $29. What happened to the other dollar?

OK DOC UNLESS IM missing something The MEN have the extra dollar.the way I came up with that is There is 25$ spent on the room .the front desk Manager gives the bellboy 5 dollars to give back to the men.The bellboy doesnt know how to split 5$ three ways so he gives EACH 1$ A PIECE =3$ SO The bell boy pockets 2 which = 5$+25=30$OR should it be said there is no extra DOLLAR

Very good Buff! There is no extra dollar is the answer. I'm impressed. Maybe there's more to you than brawn. :)

Another way to approach the question is to say that the men spent a total of $27 ($9 each X 3 men = $27.) And that the $27 was split between the hotel manager who has $25 and the bellboy who has $2 ($25 + $2 = $27.) From that approach, we see that the $30 is merely a distractor because once the refund is given, the $30 no longer counts in the equation.
