The more I think of this, the more I'm disgusted Chewie got killed off like he did. Whats wrong with a blaze of glory????

I know what you mean...I still haven't read the book yet(don't know how I'd feel about reading it.....grisly). There's no good reason I can think of for killing a canon character in EU. He was a major film character, and if he was to die he should have done it on the bigscreen or not at all.

I know why. It brings readers in. People are courious. Also, whenever you picked up a SW book before, you know even before you start reading it that the main characters will be fine. No drama at all. By doing this, they make the reader think that someone else may be next or that nothing can be taken for granted. They will buy the next book to see what else gets shaken up in the universe. Why Chewie? If I had to guess, I would say because it has a more emotional impact (he's lovable) and no loss to any writers. Think about it. How do write for someone who is more of an impact visually than in written form? Maybe it can be done, but not with the writers they have been using. Chewie has been reduced to fixing the Falcon and watching the kids. the droids better watch their backs, they might be next.

Yeah, I agree. Plus, it makes the EU seem more like a continuing timeline, instead of just a bunch of "episodes" (Like Star Trek novels).

One of the "rules" of the EU is that no book can contradict another and yes, it is built in a timeline. The other is the understanding that Lucas can do what he wants and if the movies overturn soemthing in the EU.... bad luck for the EU

Lucas was the one who granted permission for killing Chewie. A writer cannot decide that sort of thing on his own and expect the book to be approved by LFL. Lucas was also the one who allowed the return of Boba Fett. Lucas has also stated that he has no intentions on revisiting the characters from the Trilogy and is content with the novels and such to carry on the story. So yes, I agree that Lucas can come in and say, abra-kadabra he's alive but, he is not going to because he does not have the need to. Personally, I am hoping for a"Search for Spock" type of gimick. Though I doubt it will happen plus it would be cheap. But damn it! I want Chewie back. Wouldn't it have been cool if readers could have voted on who got to die?

Okay, I keep hearing "Lucas can contradict the EU whenever he wants!" as an argument as to why the EU can't be used to prove/speculate on what will happen in Episodes 2 and 3. (Nothing personal, DT, I've heard this from a lot of ppl.) I think of it this way: Of COURSE GL can contradict the EU whenever he wants, but by the same token, he can contradict the MOVIES if he really wants, so isn't any speculation moot anyway?

I don't think they'll bring him back. The way he died fit the purpose of his character very well. So it was an honorable death. And Bromine, I'm with you: Lucas can contradict the EU whenever he wants, but until he does, I say any info that hasn't been contradicted is fair game for speculation.

Personally, I dont use any EU to speculate. I know Zahn talked a lot to Lucas and there was smoe corrective work done in Spectre of the PAst / Vision series, but AFAIK, Lucas has no interest in the EU. PLEASE, NO Star Trek type stunts to bring back Chewie!! Too many of the EU books read like ST rejects!

Actually, that's one question I'd like to ask GL if I ever had the opportunity. I wonder whether he enjoys collaborating with other authors to make new SW stories, or if he just does it to fill a demand. As far as using EU for speculation, I tend to use just the main storylines, as opposed to every sentence in the EU. For example, if Obi-Wan says offhand in the EU that he'd never seen a black hole before, and then in Episode 3 he sees one, I'm not going to scream "CONTRADICTION!" On the other hand, if there's an EU story all about Luke as a baby growing up on Tattoine, and we learn in Episode 3 that he didn't live on Tattooine until he was five, well then, that's an outright contradiction in my books.

Personly, I think it was great that Chewie died, everyone just never got worried anymore. U didnt wonder if some one was gonna die, u always new that they would live.

"Jedi Knight" just means you're a Global User. Admins are "Jedi Masters", etc. You can't get rid of it.
